Purse episode offers lessons

  • Follow Letters

Oprah Winfrey has a $2.9 billion net worth. Recently, Oprah reported she experienced racism while shopping at an upscale store in Zurich, Switzerland. Oprah stated a store clerk refused to show her a handbag valued at $38,000. The store clerk did not recognize Oprah and supposedly told her it was too expensive. A female African-American billionaire was schooled in European-style racism. Her inflated ego is bruised.

However, there are two important lessons to be learned from Oprah’s experience. First, billions of dollars does not inoculate African-Americans from racism. Second, now we know why the wealthy and Rush Limbaugh howl when there is talk about raising the minimum wage. Satisfying their lust for $38,000 handbags and other high-end goodies is more important than paying lower-class workers a living wage.

WAS IT BECAUSE SHE WAS BLACK?

It seems that other women of the white color have ad similar experiences in other "snobby" stores. I guess part of the "fun" of shopping at one of these high end stores is being treated like you aren't "there" yet, i.e. your dirt!

Oprah, Rush and Minimum Wage

How did Rush get in yet another claim by Oprah that someone wouldn't sell to her because she was black and didn't appear wealthy enough. Remember the Hermes incident where cameras proved she made it all up?

The minimum wage issue is a common sense question. How high do you want it to go? Just go ahead and pick a number and let's see how THAT works out. Wages have to represent the value of the work given to the employer. If we are paying wages not based on the effort put forth we are in a whole other arrangement.

What you think about most is your God

Some people see everything through racial eyes and it controls everything they do. What makes us angry is always our sin being shown in the life of another. If we are tight with money we can't stand people who are tight. If we cheat we can't stand to be cheated etc. Whatever our weakness is we are quick to see it in others and Oprah just showed us one of hers. When you and I see our weakness in others it's a reminder that we haven't yet renewed our mind to be like the mind of Christ and not to be so critical of others who still deal with sin in their lives. The more a sin has a hold on your life the more you scream and kick when it is exposed. We can't fix each other but can tell each other who the "Fixer" is.

Now there's an idea!

Instead of Oprah spending $38,000 on a silly handbag, why doesn't she donate that money to help her fellow racists?

There are some indications based on some of her interviews that

she may have concocted the incident to make a point that racism exists all over the world in order to promote her recent film "The Butler". You know sort of like obama made up a composite girl friend in one of his books. The sales clerk in Switzerland said the incident never happened.

As far as the wealth of Rush and Oprah is concern, does the writer have any idea how many jobs these two people have created? It is in the thousands. Rush single handedly saved AM radio. I feel sorry for people who look at the world solely through the prism of wealth envy and racism. How unhappy and pessimistic their days must be.

Where's PETA?

According to news stories, the $38,000 handbag Oprah wanted to see was made of crocodile skin. Why have there been no protests by PETA?

Re: Oprah

Of course the clerk said it didn't happen.

I am reminded of A lady who was shopping in a high-end boutique in Augusta, was totally ignored by sales person who acted as if she was irritated by questions for assistance. When the owner came in and embraced the shopper and asked how her husband, Dr. "X" was doing, the clerk nearly tripped over her own feet to make a sale. Too late. That commission was lost forever.

No one knows why a sales person would do that__maybe lazy, maybe they don't need the job; who knows. I believe it is most likely about perceived "class" than anything else. But I am sure no one would broadcast that she missed out on a big sale.

And who needs a $38k handbag?
Go figure!

Oprah has created more known millionaires who are not the same race as she so I don't see any benefit for her to fabricate such a story.

What we do know is she stared down the KKK in Cummings Ga years ago. I think she knows how to move beyond racial bigotry. She also knows it when she sees it.

TM, obviously you mistaken. The clerk and the owner said it did not happen the way Oprah said and Oprah is backing off her statement. The store also said they had a tape of it.
This may be similar to an incident in 2005, Oprah Winfrey accused luxury store Hermes in Paris of turning her away when she stopped in to purchase an expensive watch for singer Tina Turner. A spokesperson for the TV personality later referred to the incident as her “crash moment.”
As it turned out, Oprah and her team arrived at Hermes at around 6:45 p.m. on June 14, 2005, which was about 15 minutes after the store had closed and was setting up a private PR event. A store spokesperson said a security guard informed the star that the store was closed. Oprah was given a card and told to come back the next day.
Surveillance footage of the exchange backed up the store’s account. Oprah apparently wanted the store to allow her to make a quick purchase, but was denied.
The New York Post, citing various sources close to Oprah, reported she was turned away because the store had been “having a problem with North Africans lately.”
So it seems if Oprah is not treated like royalty and give special treatment it is racism. It must be really sad to be black and assume everything that does not go your way is racism.

It was a language barrier issue in Switzerland. Meanwhile,

as good as it is to see Oprah acting in film again, "Lee Daniels' The Butler" has more than a few complete fabrications incorporated into it. This would be the director's doing much more than Oprah's, of course, but you know she won't speak out about it.

TM - Have you looked at the so-called KKK lately? They are not even a shadow of their former selves. They get no support from anybody but a few weirdos.

"(S)he stared down the KKK". That's funny!

Hate to tell you, TM, but Honey Boo Boo could stare down the KKK and not even break a sweat.

And she's probably more of a threat, too.

Some people seem to be desperate for a role model.

Racism Getting Stronger..WHY? (Post Under Another Topic)

In many major cities, black academic performance has actually gotten worse since Obama took office. We have also seen the dramatic nationwide rise of black teen mob violence under the Obama administration.

On July 26th Obama signed an executive order titled the “African American Education Initiative.” The order essentially gives a green light for black students to misbehave in public schools. In two places, Obama’s executive order calls on schools to reduce the number disciplinary actions taken against blacks students. The order specifically calls on schools too “not rely on methods that result in disparate use of disciplinary tools.”

To comply, public schools would have to engage in a racial quota system of discipline. The executive order will create a new Federal bureaucracy to pressure school systems to comply with the president’s demands. The executive order makes no mention of any effort to get black students to improve behavior.

There is a reason why blacks are more likely to be disciplined in school. Black students are more likely to misbehave. The U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that there is a huge crime rate disparity between blacks and other racial groups.

She's promoting a movie. Her

She's promoting a movie.

Her network is tanking, it's headed for collapse, she's driven by ego and fame and she needs for people to go see her movie.

Funny that this happened JUST WHEN her movie came out.

If she wants to spend $38,000 for a handbag, good for her. It's her money, she earned it. She's worth billions. $38,000 is chump change for her.

If the store owner in Zurich Switzerland doesn't want to show it to her, who cares?

What got me is when she said that "millions" of people were lynched, and nobody said a word about THAT.

"The Tuskegee Institute has recorded 3,446 blacks and 1,297 whites were lynched between 1882 and 1968."

That sure doesn't sound like MILLIONS to me, but people let her get away with that outrageousness!

Come on, Kevin.

I understand that the incident was racist. No argument there. But what the heck does the minimum wage have to do with that?

It's pretty clear you haven't a clue why raising the minimum wage would be a big problem for the economy. You have to consider how it would cause the level of unemployment to explode all over the country. Companies, especially small businesses, that have a very small profit margin simply cannot give raises to people across the board because it would put them out of business.

And consider who would end up paying for that wage increase and exactly who would be hit the hardest. Surely you don't need that explained to you?

Last I read

It turned out to be a hotly contested story with too witnesses who claim it never occurred and she sudden calm up about the claimed "incident".

Or, am I to believe her side because she is rich and semi-well known in Europe,

Or am I to believe her because she is rich and black?

Or am I OK to wonder if there is a staged Media Hype angle to this because of a recent Movie debut?

Ok, ok

Maybe the O did make it all up. I wouldn't be surprised either way. There are racists in the world who would do what she described and and perhaps the O really is capable of that kind of self-promoting perfidy.

What I know of the O is limited to her sporting a weird, funky eye and an "ain't gone take no s..." attitude in The Color Purple.

For crying out loud TM, I've never seen the little brat's show and I know who she is. Just like I know who Lady Gaga is and I've never seen more than a passing clip on a news show of her.

Google Honey Boo Boo. You should like her. She's a Democrat voter in training.
