Work to become great again

  • Follow Letters

President Obama, our beloved campaigner-in-chief, has decided to focus again on jobs. Remember the summer of jobs in 2010 and the pledge of millions of jobs by Vice President Joe Biden – and, in 2008, Biden’s magical three-letter-word – “j-o-b-s”? The great job summits of 2012? Or was it 2011? It was always those magical green jobs that somehow lost billions – except for friends and bundlers of Obama’s campaign cash.

We had the great stimulus of 2009, and billions lost in reckless spending and outright fraud. It was the great promise that our unemployment would go down to 5 or 6 percent. Yet for some unforeseen reason it hovered much higher, and millions who lost hope were not even counted.

We gave billions of taxpayer dollars to the auto industry while wrecking the savings of the bond holders such as teachers and firemen. In the process of losing billions in the deal, we saw the automakers show their gratitude by opening new plants in Mexico and China. Simple bankruptcy reorganization would have accomplished the same.

So many ideas borrowed from academia had unforeseen consequences in the real world. New terms were invented, such as “jobs not lost.” How about U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s bragging of the stimulus by putting more people on food stamps? The list goes on.

So we have our dear leader campaigning for a repeat of the past five years to revive our economy. How’s that working? What about Keystone Pipeline and real private-sector jobs? What about an overhaul of the tax code, a repeal of burdensome regulations and a repeal of Obamacare? Now we even have Obama advocating corporate tax cuts to boost a sagging economy while maintaining higher individual tax rates as somehow fair. He ignores that small businesses file as individuals in most cases, and it is small businesses that are the real engine of job creation and employment. Yet Obama tells us how he’s for the little guy. Go figure. Guess you’ve got to follow the money on that one.

There are so many contradictions and lies. No wonder a majority of the country no longer believes in the American dream.

We need to examine ourselves and ask: When are we going to demand better? We are losing everything for which so many before us sacrificed, so that we could enjoy this great country and its freedoms. Politicians are not the answer. It starts with us. Relive the era of John F. Kennedy: “ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”

Everyone across the economic spectrum needs to use their talents, self-reliance and sweat, and not rely on government for their daily needs. Then we will be truly great again.

The pipeline won't create

The pipeline won't create squat for jobs and simply lets the US be used as a conduit to ship the dirtiest oil possible from Canada to a Free Enterprise Zone so it can be shipped overseas with no duties. It's about 2,000 jobs a year for 2 years, then about 50 permanent jobs, not all in the US. That'll drop the unemployment rate to almost zero. The tax code does need changing. Businesses need to be penalized, not rewarded, for every job that is shipped overseas and not kept at home. Deny people access to insurance and affordable healthcare is a great way to punish people and make sure they are bankrupted by illness. Greed by the corporations moved the jobs overseas and have kept wages stagnant. They killed the American dream. Blame them.

Bod right, won't do squat for jobs and won't mean much, unless you are one of the folks that gets a job for two years, pay your mortgage for two years, feed your family, make your car payment etc. I noticed Obama is doing really well playing golf. Maybe Obama can focus on jobs for the twentieth time after his vacation!

Tell it to Iowa voters,

who appear to love their corn subsidies more than their own liberty. And demand reform in which foods can be purchased with EBT cards. Why should taxpayers be double-billed for the benefit of Coca-Cola and every other junk food and cheap sauce maker in the country? If it comes back on Georgia peanut farmers, then they should be more self-reliant, too.

I agree with this statement, BUT WE HAVE TO REMEMBER jobs are not easy to come by these days, AND the jobs that are available NEED workers that are not trained to do these jobs !!

obama has no concept of how to run a business or how to

create a job since he has never even run a lemonade stand. He has no background in economics or history.

The bottomline is obama does not believe in nor trust capitalism and the free market.

The best way for the government to create jobs is to get completely out of the way and let individuals run the economy and the country as it was designed by the Founders with political power residing with the states.

YES, Obama did make a tremendous mistake by backing "green" jobs, BUT with ALL government spending, there is SOOO much waste and fraud !! The president should have been the one "with whom the buck stopped", BUT as our history will bear out, fraud and corruption is rampent !!

we need to lower the minuim wage to hire more teenagers...an entry level job teaches so many things including responsibility..a minuim wage was never design for someone to live on and support a family...if you still make minuim wage and have been in the labor force for years..it says something about YOU and your skills not the employer.

I vehmently disagree with this ! Minumum wage should be called a living wage. I would agree if we could seperate the teenagers from the family bread-winners, BUT we can't.

Deestafford, I had to laugh

Deestafford, I had to laugh about how Obama doesn't know how to run a business and has no background in economics or history.

Dee, he is going to be President of Barack Obama, Inc. and he will be a MANY multimillionaire while you and are are eating at McDonalds.

My bet is that he and Michelle make $50 mil their first year out of office.

He knows his history and economics just fine- as to how ex-Presidents make huge bucks after they leave office.

All of you that say things like that about him, the joke is on y'all. He is going to have a monstrous net worth after this, while all of us are still plodding along. By the time that he is done, we could put all of our net worth together, and he'd still come out ahead of us.

All he cares about now is the election. What do you think that Martha Vineyard's "vacation" was about? Do you really think that he and Michelle just sunbathed and had a clam bake?

But the idea about jobs, that

But the idea about jobs, that raised a question in my mind.

All of you get out and about, and know a lot of people.

Who do you know is hiring? Who do you know has a "Help Wanted" sign outside their business? Who do you know is asking around about filling a position in their business?

I don't know of anybody, anybody have any ideas?

Because when I look around, I don't see it. I don't know anybody that is telling me that they are getting job interviews, putting in applications, etc.

Walmart didn't meet sales and profit expectations, folks, it's still bad out there. Really bad.

Get companies employing

Get companies employing people full time instead of having to find ways to cut costs and avoid onerous penalties. Tort reform would be helpful.

The minimum wage has been one of the biggest reasons for

the high unemployment rate. I venture to say it is THE biggest contributing factor for teenage and black unemployment.

I think the minimum wage should be abandoned and the wage should be agreed upon by the hirer and the hiree. It has become a political tool of the left to help get and keep support of the unions because many of their contracts are tied to the minimum wage.

Both Thomas Sowell and Walter E. Williams have done some of the most pragmatic explaining impacts of the minimum wage.

Once again a decision made on "feel goodism" rather than reality.

The idea of Obamacare to

The idea of Obamacare to lower cost of health insurance and increase the coverage of the poor is a great goal. Yet because the SCOTUS allowed to states to opt out of exchanges, expanding Medicaid, etc, then the logistics of the original plan are gone so the poor in some states won't be covered and the cost of personal insurance won't be lower in some states. Further the front end taxes to pay for the long term benefits will likely never occur from past experiences with the govt. All of Congress are mandated for open enrollment into the exchanges starting Oct 1-if they don't they won't be able to join the exchange till next open enrollment. So my question is will Congress be signing up come Oct.??? And if not what about next year. Even if the plan weren't neutered by the SCOTUS everyone's taxes will go up to pay for all those with existing conditions which law forbids them paying higher rates. So people like me who are over 50, non-diabetic, non-obese, non-medicated healthy will be paying for the sins of the fat slobs who could care less.

who can stand up to obstructionist Republicans. Right now Republicans in The House are threatening to hold America's credit rating hostage unless Congress approve cuts to Social Security.

Minimum wage, at full-time hours, equals to $14,500 per year. That's $7.25 per hour.

The average pay for a CEO at over 300 of the nation's largest companies is $7000 per hour. This is not a typo. $7000 per hour, according to a report by the AFL-CIO, which includes salaries, bonuses, perks, and other incentives.

$7.25 hour versus $7000 hour.

This is the problem. The American worker is so devalued, it is despicable. People need to be paid a living wage, at least $20 per hour, in order to grow this economy. But these corporations are GREEDY.

These heartless companies will do the most under-handed, illegal, deceptive business practices in order to fill their pockets. They couldn't care less about the common worker. They know that there are people who will do any sort of work for any sort of money, just to have a job. So they suck the life out of the workers on the factory floor, on the sales floor, on the service floor - because they can. There is no moral ground.

These blood-thirsty companies will fire an employee who gave 30 years of their life to help the company succeed. They will lay off thousands of workers to make shareholders happy. They will hobnob with politicians and do backroom deals to get some law passed that gives them even more tax breaks and corporate welfare.

Until workers get fed up (which is happening in some places), nothing will change. Folks need to get paid fairly for their work and have job security. The state of employee-employer realtionships in this country is abysmal.
