Spirit of our past vanishing

  • Follow Letters

What great wonders are left in this world if the destructive force of lies takes the wonder, or our awe, out of this great country, our faith and our own lives?

The awe of our country is that we are the freest in the world despite government interference. The awe of our faith is that God still hears our prayers despite the American Civil Liberties Union. The awe of our own lives is that they endure despite the ravages of abortion, euthanasia, forced poverty and, soon, the onslaught of Obamacare.

Our country is unique, and still we do not understand why the outside world would destroy instead of emulate our way of life. Is it because God still abides with us that we thrive through His good grace? Yet we allow ourselves to be conquered from within where selfishness is easier to accept than selflessness? Or when 15 minutes of fame is honored over a lifetime of service, devotion and hard work?

We are turning into a cancerous nation feeding on one another as fame junkies and ego cannibals. If we continue to feed off those who succeed because we are too weak to succeed on our own, we not only defeat ourselves, but commit societal suicide. It’s always easier to be a coward than stand and fight for your country, your family or your God.

The spirit of our past is fast evaporating within this fog of exsorption. Since when did we want to trade Camelot for a parking lot? We were not lucky – we were blessed. Now we live with self-hatred, self-love and envy. Who told us to believe such nonsense? Only your silence has made it so.

Clifford Henning

Graniteville, S.C.

Ok, another famous LTE.

I have no idea what this man is saying. Who is living with self-hatred, self-love and envy?

How do you live with self-hatred and self-love at the same time?

Trade Camelot for a parking lot?

Um......ok.

Poverty is being forced by

Poverty is being forced by the corporations who have taken the pay of those at the top of the chain from 20 times what the average worker earned in the 1950's to 204-354 times average worker pay (depending on source and calculations). Of course that means the underlings earn outrageous pay packages as well. Manufacturing has shifted to third world countries where they can pay pennies on the dollar for wages with no regulations. They can also burn down the occasional factory full of workers, but who cares, right? The big money is made by moving money around instead of making anything. No creating anything. Buy business, sell parts, dump employees, bankrupt businesses, walk away. Leave people in the street with no job, but who cares, right? Keep all of the money in the top 1% to 2% and use it to buy politicians, the media, think tanks, PACs, advertising, the Tea Party, influence elections to get people to vote against their own interests and vote for more policies that favor them. This works great here in the south and in other areas where there is long standing racism and bigotry along with a poorly educated populace who want to vote for people who "look just like them", and get scared by the negative advertising showing immigrants and by gosh make sure you let them know that God, Jesus, and the NRA on your side. So are $9.00 an hour jobs for the rest of your life, but who cares, right? This letter is a prime example. Getting rid of God, Obamacare (kids can stay on your insurance, can't be refused for preexisting condition, no lifetime limit,, close the doughnut hole, all things that people like but it's an evil buzzword) because you're worried that some poor woman that you don't know who's working 2 jobs to support herself because the corporations in this country haven't raised real wages in over 40 years and still barely scraping by makes a mistake and gets pregnant and decides to MAKE HER OWN HEALTH DECISION INSTEAD OF HAVING SOMEONE ELSE GET BETWEEN HER AND HER DOCTOR AND BRING DOWN THEIR OWN VERSION OF SHARIA LAW AND FORCE THEIR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS ON HER (GEE, THAT SOUNDS JUST LIKE WHAT ALL OF THE RIGHT WINGERS SAY THEY'RE AGAINST), and make it illegal for her to make her own choice between her and her doctor to have an abortion because she can't afford to miss days from work and her jobs are too physical for her to run around pregnant. Whine all they want, what the right winger want is a return to slavery, you just get paid a pittance instead of being owned so just call it wage slavery, and a theocratic fascist state. The corporations, church (Christian only), and the state are one and they own us, lock, stock, and barrel. We'll have our 1% who are the bosses and overseers. You see our past won't be lost, it'll almost be like 1850 all over again. Won't it be fun?

The letter writer is correct in his assessment.

I don't think people really understand what a very poor job our education system is doing in educating our children about the history of this great country.

What little history that is taught much of it is from a left wing perspective and contains incorrect information. There is more space given to left wing radicals of the past and their causes than is given to George Washington and the Founders. Look at a history book and see how much space is given to various historical figures.

It is possible to go through some of the most "prestigious" universities in the country and never take a course in American history. Thanks goodness there are places like Hillsdale College, and I'm sure there are a few others, where students learn history and its importance to the functioning of the country.

It's hard to know where you are going if you don't know where you have been. That applies well to a country and its people.

Left wing radicals? Like MLK?

Left wing radicals? Like MLK? Lincoln? Douglas? Hiilsdale" You talk a slanted view a the world? They've got it. Why not try Bob Jones U.? Liberty U.? With Limbaugh as their shill you know they want students to learn all sides of history. A school that suggests, ie. "requires" you participate in right wing/religious functions (that's why they refuse government student loans, etc. so they can discriminate. coerce, force, whatever, at will. Just screams a well rounded student doesn't it? I'm sure the "dark ones" feel right at home there. Just ask their president.

You mentioned Bob Jones

You mentioned Bob Jones University. Did you know when BJU breaks for the summer in Greenville, SC local businesses seek to hire these students because of their desirable traits instilled at the university. Things like, a good work ethic, honesty, kindness, charity, politeness and clean lifestyle, you know, the gifts of the Spirit. I know you hate all this.

Soros. The right wing

Soros. The right wing boogeyman. He gives a pittance compared to just the Koch brothers. Throw them and the 4 Walton's and you have 6 of the 10 richest people in America and the biggest bank for the right. Then you have Adelson at 12. Soros is at 15. Nice try. Soros is way down the list and not the scary big donor that the loon Beck tried to make him. His donations are dwarfed by just one of the others. Alice Walton dropped $250,000 just on the Charter School Amendment here in Ga. If she's willing to spend 1/4 of a million on a state she doesn't live in or care about for a state issue, imagine what she does on Congressional, Senate, and Presidential races, not to mention PAC's and thinks thanks. Nice try, but no cigar.

I can't speak for anybody else, but my parents instilled those traits in me long before I went to college. To suggest that a university would instill those traits in people is bizarre. And those traits aren't gifts of the Holy Spirit, you don't have to be Christian to have those traits.

Yea, I was wondering when it was going to happen. For the past month (?) or so, most of the letters to the editor were letters talking about other letters. The pro-religious Chronicle slant was almost shockingly absent for that time. But a leopard never changes it's spots, does it? And here comes C.H. with some pro-religious gobble-dee-gook to keep the Augusta automatons happy. Hey C.H., I've got a question for you. Why does YOUR God want YOU to kill people in front of him (Luke 19:27)?

Bod....I'm not worried about what corporate leaders are making.....I'm more worried about what is forcibly taken from me to support those who are too lazy, or too stupid, to work in the well paying jobs those corporations provide.....or any other job for that matter. THOSE are the people dragging this country down....not the overpaid executives who manage to get their money from the private sector.

It is interesting how liberals think corporations are evil or greedy when their customers voluntarily give them money in exchange for goods and services, but have no problem with the government taking money from people under threat of prison.

It seems to be a "automatic" reaction with liberals. Profit is a dirty word and is synonyms with greed. Wealth begets wealth and poverty begets poverty and they seem to prefer poverty for all. Sad !

"If we continue to feed off those who succeed because we are too weak to succeed on our own, we not only defeat ourselves, but commit societal suicide."

Does this include people on Social Security and Medicare ?? I will agree to the point that millions are taking away by taking Medicaid, food stamps, and welfare !! If the millions that CAN afford their own medical care and food WERE DROPPED OFF OF THE GRAVY TRAIN, this government could save hundreds of billions of dollars per year !!

Yes, that is why I am for a flat tax. The more you make the more you pay.
If you make $500 a week you pay $100 and if you make $ 5000 a week you pay $ 1000. I have a big problem with people that not only pay zero taxes but get a check for $ 4000 back from the IRS at the end of the year.
I also have a problem with GE not paying any federal taxes.
