Media changing

I was struck by John Gogick’s comment July 20 (“Get online for deeper look into our stories”) about the “two historical missions of journalism: Get people’s attention and provide information in a context that gives it meaning.” I see media doing a very good job of the former but not the latter.

We are a McDonald’s/microwave/Headline News/social media society. Most people do not seek out the news in context at all. They read the attention-getting headlines and read no further. They form opinions based on headlines or sound bites. What is the responsibility, not the mission, of the journalist in today’s society?

I agree with Donald Gregory’s letter “TV options dwindling” in the July 21 paper. The media have too much power to create and to destroy. Old reruns on television and reading books are becoming more appealing.
