What are we going to do?

  • Follow Letters

In the aftermath of George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin, I ask: What now?

I was shocked when my friend called and asked if I had heard the verdict announced. I said, “No.” She said sadly, “George Zimmerman was found not guilty.”

I hurriedly told her to let me go to tune in to the news on television.

Once I heard the news and analyses of the verdict, I began to reflect back to the times I had served on juries and wanted to vote based on my emotions rather than the evidence and laws presented in court.

Since there weren’t any witnesses to the fight, and Zimmerman wasn’t compelled to testify, this may have cast doubt in the minds of the jurors. As I see it, Zimmerman was the judge, jury and executioner in this case.

With Trayvon’s appearance, Zimmerman had determined that he was one of the “(expletives)” who always get away, as he related to the dispatcher, and he was going to make sure this one wouldn’t get away.

One may ask why Zimmerman felt that way. What was going through his mind? Or had he had negative experiences with other “(expletives)?”

What now, after the marches and protests have faded away? What are going to do?

Yes, blacks kill each other at an alarming rate – in fact, in the past 20 years, 47 percent of all murders in our country have been committed by blacks, who only make up 13 percent of the population.

This isn’t a just black problem. It is an American problem, too. What are we going to do to alleviate this problems and others?

Are we going to do something about gun control?

Are we going to mobilize to change the Stand Your Ground Law in Florida and any other state?

Are we going to improve the conditions of our underserved and isolated segments of our population?

Are we going to work to see that all citizens are treated equally in our legal system?

Are we going to continue to move away from troubled cities and create own little kingdoms?

Are we going to stop criticizing those who try to work or associate with other races?

Are we going to learn to respect people regardless of race or status in life?

Are we going to plan to improve our political divisions, both local and national?

Are we going to continue to assume that all persons of a race are lawless, just because a few are?

Are we going to continue to profile shoppers because of their race?

Are we going to continue to assume that some people are incompetent because of their race?

Are we going to promote and work to improve income and opportunity inequalities?

Are we going to encourage people of good character and integrity to become our political leaders?

If we don’t work to solve some of our interracial and intraracial problems, we are going to leave our country in bad shape for future generations.

The most pressing problem..

Most of the problems mentioned in this letter are the result of the break down in the family unit which almost always leads to poverty. The out of wedlock birth rate in the black community is almost 70%. This 70% out of wedlock birth rate is almost a guarantee of poverty which usually ends up being generational. This break down of the family began in the early 1960 when, thanks to the federal government it was no longer necessary for the father to remain with the family. In fact there was a big financial advantage if he were not present. This so called "war on poverty" served to enslave the poor by making them " dependent" on the federal government for the necessities of life. The black family has always been extremely strong which enabled it to withstand the effects of slavery and discrimination for over 150 years. Those entrapped in the welfare system have little hope of escape by design. This can only be fixed within the black community through the Churches. All of America has drifted away from Biblical Christian principals and to survive as a country we must return to those roots.

RMSHEFF, You have hit the nail on the head once again.

Do you notice all the questions asked seem to be what society or the white man is going to do rather than the blacks attacking the root of the problem as the black community and its "leaders" always seem to run away from?

The problem lies in the breakup of the black family and for some reason the black community gives it only lip service. All the statistics are there as to what happens when children grow up in single parent households. The black community has to solve this problem and stop blaming whitey and society and various laws.

Fredrick Douglas put it so well when he said:
"Everybody has asked the question...'What shall we do with the Negro?' I have but one answer from the beginning. Do nothing with us! Your doing with us has already played the mischief with us. Do nothing with us!" Fredrick Douglas

If the black community will sincerely work on solving the out of wedlock births, put a premium on education, and stop playing the part of the victim rather than accepting individual responsibility it will see a tremendous improvement in its situation.

Of course you will not hear any of this from the race hustlers because they will lose their incomes if the situation improved.

It's too bad the black community doesn't take as its role models people like Doctors Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele, and Ben Carson.

Black community....take these as your leaders rather than the gangsta rap artists and the race hustlers in the Black Congressional Caucus. They are agitators and following their advice and leadership will take you only deeper into the liberal plantation.

Here are a few questions left out!

Are we going to assume that the verdict found was unexpected and not based on sound legal principals?

Are we going to racially profile the jury that reached the only verdict that was proper considering the prosecutions weak case?

Are we going to keep the false assumptions and speculation about what went on going regardless of all the evidence?

Are we going to keep accusing Zimmerman of being a racist with out any evidence?

Oh never mind it's liberals, logic and reality need not apply, if I only feel strongly about something hard enough and my heart is pure.....

Outstanding comments

from RMSHEFF and deestafford. Yes, the black community has spiritual problems that result in a high rate of violent crime, illegitimate births, single parent homes, and teens who had rather dress like gangstas than glorify Christ in their daily walk. The solution will be found in the churches, but only if the churches turn to God instead of the government.

The answer is not to disarm law-abiding citizens and do away with stand-your-ground laws. Standing your ground is a God-given right. "If a thief is found breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no bloodguilt for him" (Exodus 22:2 English Standard Version). The government should never require people to retreat from their homes whenever criminals break and enter. Such a requirement would only worsen the crime rate.

Getting back to God and biblical principles can give us the wisdom necessary for distinguishing good solutions and ideas from bad ones. We definitely need that wisdom, and we can't get it from race hustlers and gangsta rap artists.

Stand Your Ground?

Self defense was the bases of George Zimmerman's defense. Stand your ground did not even enter into the equation. Stand your ground is used by Blacks more often and more successfully than whites.

Great questions, carcraft

Are we going to keep the false assumptions and speculation about what went on going regardless of all the evidence? (carcraft).

Great question. I'm convinced that the difference of opinion about the jury's not-guilty verdict is due to the information people choose to believe. Sometimes people get too emotional to weigh the evidence objectively.

Information carries less weight when it comes from people who are not eyewitnesses and who are not speaking under oath. The information that carries the most weight comes from eyewitnesses who are testifying under oath while being examined and cross-examined by competent attorneys. This information is most likely to amount to the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

The jury members went by this information in George Zimmerman's case, and that is why they found Mr. Zimmerman not guilty of murder or manslaughter. The people who disagree with the verdict have chosen to trust secondhand information from pundits who are not speaking under oath or being examined by competent lawyers. That's a bad mistake!

this causes profiling

"...in the past 20 years, 47 percent of all murders in our country have been committed by blacks, who only make up 13 percent of the population."
and it's actually worse. Young black males are almost all of that 47%, and only about 3% of the population.
And a large portion of that 3% is in jail at any given time, lowering the number available to actually commit crimes.
and the murders would be more except for advances made in emergency room surgery techniques
and it isn't just murder. It's all violent crimes.
in some cities the rate of black violent crime is close to 100%
but do go on...

their god instead of their God

What do you call people who have a total focus on race? When our race and self are our god we have a god that is far too small to give us joy and peace. When God is our God and we take pride out of our life and have an upward and outward focus we never think of our race. The biggest thing in your life is always your god. Our answers happen in the spiritual before you see answers in the natural. Without a relationship with Jesus we are all hopeless now and for eternity. We never have to be like the reputation that others within our race have created for our race. We can be Christ like so others see Jesus and not the color of our skin when they see us. Quit teaching kids that they evolved from some animal but were created by a loving God and watch society change quickly. Quick killing unborn babies and calling it freedom. Quick saying sin is okay because I am made me in a way that I have to sin. There is not a race problem but only a sin problem. Make Jesus number one and when you look in the mirror you will see who Jesus loves and not the color of your skin.

White folk, particularly
Unpublished

White folk, particularly conservatives, are like the wizard who hid behind the curtain. At the root of every social ill adversing affecting the black community, there is some white person or group reaping huge profits. Whites manufacture guns, ammunition, alcohol, cigarettes, are involved in illegal drug distribution, they are promoting hip hop music, profiting from black incarcerations, sponsor negative entertainment, profit from abortions, etc. Name one thing negatively affecting the black community that is not reaping a huge profit for some white person? You can't if you're honest.

There are many aspects to this that make it a tough nut!

YMNBDE-47% of murderers are mostly young black males. I had a friend who data a gorgeous black lady. He ask her one time "why are you dating me"? Her answer was, "so many young black men are in jail or have criminal pasts, so many are addicted to drugs, many that have not had this go on are already married and a few are gay, that doesn't leave a lot to choose from" This young lady wanted some one that was intelligent and would bring stability to the family she wanted and found a tiny pool of black men to choose from.

I was thinking yesterday about this

I was wondering if the black culture ever got it's act together and bought into the American dream we could see an American renaissance. There are a lot of people in the black community that are risk takers and very intelligent. Combine that with some education and you could get some great entrepreneurs!

This is what we can worry about

WASHINGTON -
"It was crazy. Beyond our control," says the manager of the King Convenience store in the 1500 block of U Street in Southeast D.C.

He says a flash mob of teens stole candy, soda and other items from his store Saturday night.

"Bunch of kids, more than 20 or 30, grabbed everything," he says, asking not to be identified. "They grabbed everything and then ran away from the store."

funny its the libs that keep

funny its the libs that keep insisting that we classify races etc...its the libs that insist that they know better making all kind of laws to rule the masses.from diet to guns.. its the libs that keep on insisting on more gun laws when we have over 20k on the books already as if it will make a difference...its the libs who ignore evidence because it doesnt support their pre-concieved notions...its the libs who had to make up a new racial classfication[white-hispanic] to fit their narrative of events..its the libs who blame america and all its wonderful opportunities as a racist country when people all over the world literally die to come here...its us conservatives that believe people are capable of taking care of themselves regardless of race..the safe quards have been put in the system for decades...now its time for all individuals to be responsiable.

Profiling

On yesterday's Townhall.com, the brilliant, break-it-down-so-anyone-can-understand-it, Dr Walter Williams had a great column on profiling and why it is used, right, and beneficial. Just one example...if you are looking for a rapist you look for a male because historically the vast majority of rapist are male. That's profiling.

I've Said It Before & Will Say IT Again,

Why take the Time, Effort and Money to try and change a culture that most like and stand the ground of "No See, No Hear, No Speak".

Like I said before, leave them alone and they will eventually eradicate their own problems.

Do you notice how in those destructive flash mobs and the roving gangs of youth who beat up white people at the Milwaukee State Fair a couple of years ago are referred to as a "group of youths" without saying that it was black youths? The media is trying to whitewash the image of the blacks that it refuses to identify them in many cases.

Of course, they do the same thing with not identifying a transgressing politician, no matter if it is local like the current mayor of San Diego or national, if he is a democratic; yet, put Republican in the headline if he is a Republican?

Come on

So, you think if the Rep said "oh, the heck with it, free abortions for all", they would win the next election? The Republican have never made overturning Roe/Wade a plank in their platform. GWB never proposed it. Nor did McCain or Romney. They have just resisted Federal dollars paying for it.

Did I say anything about abortions?

When we have idiots saying a woman can only get preg in a legit rape---or that they need a tube inserted in their body for checking of pregnancy...the REPS lose VOTERS....we have some who don't want birth control for goodness sake....some still look at the ole saying...pregnant & barefoot....I say..

Have birth control clinics & yes spend $$ on women on Planned Parenthood....or else feed/clothe & school all the kids coming into this world...we can't have it BOTH ways...why fuss about feeding the masses when you could spend less with birth control......now I can't stay & debate because I have business to handle...

Telling folks to refrain from sex IS NOT WORKING & IT WON'T...not saying you said that....but some have.
