We need to foster change

  • Follow Letters

On July 20, I called for gatherings at the steps of the Augusta Judicial Center and John H. Ruffin Jr. Courthouse, and at Williams Memorial C.M.E. Church. Other leaders shared in major roles for both events for Trayvon Martin.

The George Zimmerman trial has caused a divide in communities across the nation. However, I am saddened that both families will feel the pain for some time to come. Nevertheless, this does not change what could have been avoided, had the right choice been made to know where one’s rights begin and end. Don’t you think our laws need to be changed or modified – so those who make them, those who carry them out and those who must abide by them will understand and have no question as to their function?

I have no problem with going to Sanford, Fla., nor to Jena, La., to stand by the Jena Six. But I am concerned that on the heels of this national movement and before this is over for good, we have had three young African-Americans killed just this past weekend and others killed in our very own back yard. We will have vigils for them, and I have led and shared with many. But after the demonstrations and vigils, what will we do? In Chicago, more than 500 were killed last year and about 200 so far this year. Why are no buses of protesters going up there?

I think the lives of black men and women are important also. Therefore, I call for the reactivation of Augustans Together, the organization that promoted racial and ethnic harmony. We need to foster change.

And just who broke a law that you don't think understood they were breaking at the time? Do you think Martin didn't know that it is illegal to punch someone in face?

Rev I have been reading for years of your efforts to improve the

lives of the people in the black community and particularly the black youth. I wish there were more leaders in the black community rather than the racial pimps like Jackson, Sharpton, Holder, and obama's recent actions indicate he could become one.

Now, I'm going to say some things that will angry some people but I think it needs saying about the black community that allows itself to be kept on the liberal plantation:

When you have 70% out of wedlock births and a female having multiple babies by multiple males their is no strong family fabric holding the culture together. Back during the Jim Crow days and segregation of the 30s, 40s, and 50s the out of wedlock birth rate and two parent family rate of the black community was almost that of the whites. Now it is sky rocketing and in too many cases considered normal and acceptable. This maybe the biggest problem facing the black community because a stable, two parent family is the foundation of any positive culture.

The education level of blacks is atrocious. Not because of whitey keeping their schools poorly funded and supported. Look at Detroit where over half of the population is classified as illiterate. Higher than most third world country. The school systems that are failing the blacks are in the majority of cases are run by blacks from top to bottom. Funding in many cases is higher per pupil than it is in other cases. Washington DC has the highest per pupil funding and has a terrible education level. I there is the idea in the black community that if one is trying to take of advantage of education and learn they are acting white and are octracized. Until blacks take advantage of the educational system and learn they are doomed to menial jobs. The blacks of the 30s, 40s, and 50s could only dream about the educational opportunities blacks have today. Why is it that a black child goes to school sitting side by side the same white children for all grades and come out at lower proficiency scores? It can't be they education system because the two races have sit in the same classroom, with the same teachers, with the same books year after year but the blacks score lower and have higher drop out rates. Why is it that the scores of the black child are on par in the lower grades but drop as they get into the later grades? Is it because the family loses influence on the child as they get older and the kids fall under the thugs in the neighborhood who put the don't act white attitude in their heads? They have no father in the home to keep them on the right path so they fall in with the thugs who are on the way to crime and a prison sentence and fathering multiple children by different females.

The gang culture is strong in the black community because children want and need discipline and structure in their lives. They need and want someone to care about them. In essence they want a family and they get that from the gangs because they don't get those things from a strong two parent family. The gangs are substitutes for the family. When the children join gangs they adopt the culture and mores of the gang culture.

Why do blacks make up the overwhelmingly majority of prisoners? They commit most of the crimes is the obvious answer. (Now there are some who say the law goes after blacks more than whites and let the whites slide, but their is no evidence to back that up.) The basic commonality is the vast, vast majority of prisoners come from single parent families.

Unless a black is over 50 years old they have not felt the true effects of Jim Crow segregation and racial prejudice. They know only what has been passed down to them as history. Just like the generation before them heard stories about life under slavery. Is there some prejudice and discrimination today? Of course there is some but there is some in every culture in every country in the world. Many in the black community are using this as an excuse for lack of progress and accepting individual responsibility for their lives. They want to listen to the racial pimps, who would be out of a cushiony life if the blacks would escape from the liberal plantation, because becoming a success in life is hard when you have to take responsibility for your actions and not blame others for your plight.

Finally, obama has divided the races more than was anticipated. His remarks last week were in the same vein as those of Jackson Sharpton, and the other racial pimps except he was smoother. He had more in common with Zimmerman than he did with Martin because he came from a multi-racial family as did Zimmerman. obama has attended the best private grammar and high schools as well as the most prestigious colleges and universities. obama has never had "the black experience" and he feels slighted because of it. He has never had to live in a lower middle class neighborhood where people had to really do all they could to protect and secure their property because they did not have the money to replace it if stolen. In reality, obama has been raised with not a silver spoon in his mouth but maybe a bronze one. When he was a youngster he never really wanted for anything because there was always someone in the family providing for all the necessities and nicities of life. In the final analysis he did not grow up "black".

Rev, once again my hat is off to you for all you are trying to do. Please try to influence all those who want to "help" the black community to focus on the real problems and not do the "feel good" things such as demonstrating with chants on the things that are meaningless and divisive.

Not safe in a library..

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The normal quiet of a northwest Atlanta library was shattered last week when two gunmen came in and robbed the library staff and patrons.

Seven people were in the Perry Homes branch of the Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library System on Bolton Road when the hold-up happened last Friday afternoon, according to Channel 2 Action News.

“I heard a woman scream and I looked around, and a guy said, ‘You know what this is, get on the ground. Don’t look at me,’” said Glen Fortenberry, who was at a computer when the robbers entered.

Fortenberry told Channel 2 that he turned around to find a gun pointed at his face.

“I went in my pocket and gave him all my change,” Fortenberry told the station.

“He said, ‘I know you got some dollars,’” Fortenberry said. “I said take it easy man. Be patient. I’m getting my wallet out now.”

Library employees told Channel 2 that the facility has no on-site security, and that a panic button that was supposed to alert police didn’t work.

No arrests have been made.

The reason we stay on alert..

Wow, I was looking up the

Wow, I was looking up the info related to the success of my black brothers and sisters only to find things aren't going as well as I'd thought. Apparently the 2008 recession devastated Hispanic the most, then Blacks, and least White Americans. Neither the Hispanics or Blacks after rallied as well after their losses either. Another interesting study examining wealth found that middle class whites live in safer, healthier neighborhoods than even wealthy blacks. Affluent Asians lived in the safest and healthiest in this study. So wealth didn't correlate with health disparities or crime-it was heavily influenced by ethnicity. I couldn't believe it=areas like Atlanta and outside DC have had a bustling wealthy black community growing above the national average then bam like a freakin' hammer. I'm sorry for my ignorance I thought things economically were really going well from earlier reading. The freakin' economy killed all of us and why blacks aren't raising cane with Obama to fix the disparity he has some control over is beyond me. The black community was doing better under Bush.

Stand your ground only
Unpublished

Stand your ground only applies when you have the ability to retreat. Zimmerman could NOT retreat with Martin straddling him, beating him in the head. That is why he did NOT try to use the stand your ground defense. Also, stand your ground does not give you the right to use force when you are just being followed. T3...PLEASE learn the difference between 1a, b, c, and d of the law that is JUST definitions of terms, and sections 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 which state what constitutes the commission of the crime. In order for it to be "stalking" there MUST be repeated incidents.
