Safety outweighs speed

  • Follow Letters

Calhoun Expressway is two-and-a-half miles long from Lake Olmstead to 12th Street. If you travel the speed limit, which is 50 mph, it will take you three minutes to travel this distance. If you travel 65 mph, weave in and out of traffic and make everyone’s trip a potential hazard, it will take you two minutes and 18 seconds.

Is it really worth the 42 seconds you save to put everyone’s life at risk? Think about it and slow down.

A nice way to put thing into perspective.

There are times when I start to take a chance while driving in order to gain a little time or distance and then I think, "Is this worth the risk of having a wreck and spending all the hours associated with one to gain 10 seconds or a few feet?" The answer is always "No".

Good Letter!

I use Calhoun quite often; I poke along at 55 and a constant barrage of cars come zipping by me. I especially hate it when a car will pass me and immediately cut sharply onto the fifteenth street exit -- and then another, and another.

If the county wants to make some easy money, keep placing radar cops around the first curve where the Washington Road traffic blends onto Calhoun. There used to be cops there all the time, but I haven't seen any lately.

Good letter about risk versus reward. So lets continue, it is worth the risk to play on a bycycle on in traffic? Is it worth what ever the reason to let a drunk, convicted in court of no longer being allowed to drive, cruise around town on a moped? Did letting your grandkids play in the street on the golf cart earn you any real points worth the risk. What do we as a society gain by letting these idiots play in traffic? How many do we have to kill every year before we understand the risk versus the rewards. Remember, even you at home who may thing you are not affected by all this, your taxes pay to clean the mess off the roads.
