Borders must be secure

  • Follow Letters

Reform of this country’s laws regulating immigration may or may not be necessary; that view is certainly debatable. What is not debatable is that both Democrats and Republicans are pandering for the Hispanic vote. What is not debatable is that business desires the cheap labor provided by illegals.

Even worse, the marketing industry is encouraging a bilingual society by its practices; the entrance to a particular home-improvement store and the labels on cans are prime examples! What is not debatable is that the current laws regulating immigration are not being enforced or there would not be 10-plus million illegal aliens in the country.

Again, what is not debatable is that it is beyond stupid to attempt reform of the nation’s immigration laws without first securing the borders of this country against the invasion of illegals. There are reports that, given the discussion of immigration reform and possible amnesty by the “Gang of Eight,” the number of border crossings has increased dramatically. This was vividly demonstrated during a recent visit to the southern U.S. border by U.S. Sens. John McCain and Charles Schumer. Apparently in their presence a woman scaled an 18-foot fence to gain admittance to this country. So much for border security.

Other countries secure their borders. Why don’t we? The obvious answer is that the majority of those in the federal government, both Democrats and Republicans, don’t want a secure border.

Hubert Baker

Aiken, S.C.

Complaining is easy - I'd be interested in hearing Mr. Baker's suggestions for securing an almost 8,000 mile shared broder between the U.S.-Canada-Mexico - a 19-foot fence instead of an 18-foot fence perhaps? Of course never let facts get in the way of a good rant, as illegal border crossings are at their lowest levels in more than 40 years.

fedex227 don't jump to conclusions

it appears that the boarder isn't as secure as one would imagine with drug catels having look out posts on US terratory and increase in the number of illegals trying to get into America ahead of the immigration bill. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/apr/10/illegal-border-crossings...

fedex..as usually we can rely

fedex..as usually we can rely on the left to make silly arguements...why not a fence and enforcement along our southern border is a seive which allows all types to enter our country...seems to work for ISRAEL..we simply cannot have a govt that simply choose what laws to enforce or not...

Ilegal immagration sould be stopped, BUT

I agree with this LTE, but I don't believe it has anything to do with politics. I believe that George W. made some statements about the people that are already in The U.S. I believe he was for a legal way for Latinos to become citizens. I believe George W. was in a round about way, WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO ILEGAL LATINOS, was saying that he understood that these people are doing jobs that Americans don't want. In stead of putting these people down, WE SHOULD THANK THEM FOR DOING A GREAT JOB in these undesirable jobs !!

The immigration problem may

The immigration problem may solve itself given the continued economic decline being managed by president Obama and company. Soon Americans may be headed to Mexico or Canada to find a job.

RMSHEFF, I am glad you mentioned Canada

Why should Canadians be treated much, much better than Mexicans. Is it a caucasian thing or maybe that is the way it allways has been ?!! Latinos deserve much better because of the jobs they do for legal Americans.

"...illegal border crossings are at their lowest levels in more than 40 years."

Ya, but those "undocumented" border crossings have turned into a flood.

We can start our "banter" with a new controvercial LTE

How are Canadians treated much, much better ? I believe thousands of Canadians are allowed to come to The U.S. without being hastled. I believe these Canadians are allowed, at their free will, to come and go back while earning a great living here ! Our feelings and attitude toward Latinos is terrible, especially compared to Canadians !!

t3bledsoe....the work requirements for the Canadians is EXACTLY the same. If they aren't here legally, they can't work legally....the difference....they come here legally. THAT is why they don't get "hastled" (sic)

Because I looked it up?

I could have used CNN, NBC, and the NYTimes sources, but I was happy to see that Alex Jones (a conservative, right-wing, conspiracy theorist) cited the same stats - just for you Angela ;-)

So if you report fewer border
Unpublished

So if you report fewer border crossings (ie, you are ordered to report less) then there ARE less.....is that what you are saying? Very similar to when you give SSI instead of unemployment to people, the unemployment number goes down....even though the actual number of unemployed people does not. Figures don't lie, but liars sure can figure.
