He's 'natural born'

  • Follow Letters

This letter addresses an issue in a letter written by Tom Hunter of Augusta (“AP is covering for Obama,” March 28). He states that President Obama is ineligible to be the president based on his birth in Kenya.

According to the U.S. Constitution, a “natural born citizen” – or one who had citizenship at the time the Constitution was written – who has attained the age of 35 years “and been fourteen years a resident within the United States” – is eligible for the office of president.

A natural born citizen, as opposed to a naturalized citizen, is one who has been born in the United States or has at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen. The U.S. State Department guidelines explain that a child born outside the United States, with at least one parent of U.S. citizenship, has U.S. citizenship from birth.

Therefore, if President Obama’s mother was a U.S. citizen at the time of his birth, he is eligible to be the president of the United States, and his place of birth is irrelevant.

So, What's Your Point?

At this point and time, MaryStuart Hoppmann, it really does NOT matter anymore, does it? We are stuck with him, sooooooooo, we do not want to hear about it anymore! You can bet your bottom dollar though, had this guy been a republican or independent, the democrats would have gotten him out of the running quicker than you can snap your fingers! I really do wish republicans and independents had as unscrupulous, conniving, back-stabbing, dirty-dealing lawyers as the democrats! It might level out the paying field, know what I mean??

Actually, his place of birth

Actually, his place of birth WOULD matter IF he was born in Kenya or some other country. The law the letter writer cites includes the provisions that the US citizen parent must have resided in the United States for at least 5 years AFTER the age of 14 for the child to automatically be a citizen. Obama's mother birthed him at the age of 18, which would only be 4 years, and therefore, IF he was born in another country, he would NOT be a "natural born" US citizen.

Get ALL of your facts correct Mary Hoppmann. Where he was born WOULD matter if he was born in a foreign country.......which is alleged but unproven. But IF he was born in a foreign country and his mother was 18 when she gave birth he would NOT be a natural born citizen because his mother did not reside in the United States for 5 years after the age of 14. Reading comprehension is a wonderful thing.

I am NOT saying that Obama was born in Kenya. I am just saying that Mary Hoppmann's blanket statement that "if Obama's mother was a US citizen at the time of his birth....his place of birth is irrelevant" is not a true statement. There ARE conditions to that provision.

Two great posts indeed.

Two great posts indeed. Dicotomy's post is nothing but easily provable facts, yet SOMEONE gave him/her "thumbs down" anyway. I would LOVE for the person responsible to have the courage to speak up as to why they find such facts objectionable.

We will never know for sure

We will never know for sure who Obama’s father was. Most likely his mother didn’t know.
