Obama is a friend to Israel

Cal Thomas’ column in The Augusta Chronicle (“Flight of fancy,” March 24) denigrating President Obama’s trip to Israel is typical of those friendly to Israel but who never believed the president was a friend of Israel.

Any person with logic who listened to the president in Israel must be so impressed with his passion and directness. He clearly stated that the United States stands with Israel and that there must be a two-state solution to bring peace to the area. His remarks brought the young Israeli audience to a standing ovation. What more does Thomas and his cronies who hung on to Mitt Romney as the friend of Israel want?

Obama bolstered our ally Jordan and met the Palestinians, and pulled off a great coup when he had Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu call the Turkish prime minister to apologize for the unfortunate incident in which Israel attacked a Turkish ship. Thus, he brought another ally for Israel into play.

The Republicans who whispered before the election that Obama was no friend of Israel may continue to believe so, but the rest of the world and the Israelis themselves are now convinced he is.
