Sheriff's raise unjustified

  • Follow Letters

Regarding the wage increase for the newly elected sheriff of Richmond County: When a person has been in a job a reasonable amount of time, that person might have the grounds to ask for a wage increase. When you accept a job at a particular salary to start with, two to three months isn’t a reasonable time.

I cannot ask this of my employer, as we have pre-identifying circumstances to obtain a wage increase – one, that the company does well financially; two, we take on a job that clearly states that the wage is such-and-such and might therefore be already above my current rate.

Since the people in Richmond County sat back again and allowed this to happen, they deserve to have whoever is in this position to take their money without their questioning it.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Maybe it's just wealth envy. The writer certainly isn't aware of what jobs of this magnitude pay in the business world.

The Raise

The Citizens of Richmond County did not get to vote on the Raise. We got to vote for the Sheriff. We were not told when he was running for sheriff that he would ask for a raise this soon. I think if he had he might not have got elected!!!

I do not think he should have gotten a raise. He knew what the pay was and if he did not like it he should not have run for sheriff.

The county commission voted for him to have the raise. They did not ask the citizens that put them in office they did what they wanted. Now it is up to the citizens to vote them all out next election.

bumblebeerose, I believe you are forgetting that you are talking about the voters of Richmond County? Go back and look at whom they have elected in the past.

Augusta continues to go downhill but that is usually the way when cities are run by democrats. Here are some good examples.

"Something tells me he will earn every penny...."

Maybe. Remains to be seen. However, I can assure you that if we had just elected a white sheriff with a problematic prior work history in the sheriff's department, who apparently had/has a womanizing problem, who attempted to cover up an embezzlement by a public school employee and then protected her from being prosecuted, I ASSURE you that the black commissioners would not have swelled up liked old blowhard bullfrogs to get the new the new rookie white sheriff a pay raise after 6 weeks in office.

I agree that it is a done deal. But it should be recognized for what it was.....a racial issue pushed by racist commissioners who do nothing but play racial games and this was the "who's got the biggest one" game. A pay raise would NEVER have been mentioned if the newly elected sheriff was white. It's done....but call it what it was.

And then there is Grady Smith and his ethics problem "oh yeh guys, I'll help you out with this" vote.

The problems on the

The problems on the Augusta/Richmond Country Board of Commissioners will never change as long as the citizens keep electing the same people. When someone proves they are unworthy they should not be in office. One thing to do is change the way votes are taken. There needs to be a quorum determined for a vote to count and if a member walks out thinking the vote will stop that member should be counted as absent and the vote continue and results confirmed. One more thing...if you accept the office of Commissioner you should make yourself available at each and every meeting.

Grady Smith should definitely be tossed out at the next election.

Life is not fair, and politics is....

warped and twisted...

Accept it or work to change it. The politics, that is. Not much you can do about life.

Come to think about it. Given recent history, there's not much that can be done about crooked politics either....

You know what?

I really don't care one way or the other. There's nothing I can do about it.

www.augustagapolicits.com under files shows all records regarding this. The Sheriff is now being paid the salary he should have been paid from day one compared to the salary without the required adjustments for working the courts and COLA as required by law. In addition to what is required by law, past Sheriff's have been paid what their predecessor was paid - even Strenght went in at the current salary of Webster. If you really want the truth, do the research for yourself.
