Are police targeting blacks?

  • Follow Letters

Last year, we the people voted Richard Roundtree for Richmond County sheriff – a man who we thought might help make a positive change in Augusta, and so far maybe he has. But the thing that has been bothering me is, why is he only focused on the areas that are mostly black-populated?

I have no problem with the road blocks, because something does need to be done about the speeding and carelessness that drivers have when it comes to drinking, driving and doing drugs and then they get behind a steering wheel.

My thing is, why have just the black areas – south Augusta, downtown, and the east Augusta neighborhoods – been targeted with road blocks? When will there be road blocks put up in the upper part of Augusta, Summerville and those areas? Are they not included as parts of Augusta?

The new sheriff asked for more money. He has that. Now what is he going to do about policing these other areas?

I want Roundtree to do things

I want Roundtree to do things exactly like he wants with no interference. If it works and crime goes down, I want him to get the credit. If things get worse I want him to get the blame. He won the election...he got his pay raise.....now the only thing left is the performance. No excuses.

What is the motivation of your complaint? Concerned about your own neighborhood or think your's is being targeted?

Perhaps you should just ask for what you want Vanessa. I find that to be the first step in solving a problelm. Call Sheriff Roundtree and express your needs. Do you live in a neighborhood where there is a lot of crime...lots of drunk drivers? Tell him.

Rest assured someone will break the scalping laws and get arrested. Never fails.

People of color are

People of color are "targeted" in: Home financing, car sales, employment opportunities, selective prosecutions, death penalty convictions, out-&-out police shootings, higher interest rates for credit, higher unemployment rates, lower salaries on professional schedules, and rarely is it a matter of "news." Go to Traffic Court and see whose there...the answer to the article's title would then become clear.

Yes, jtf, but it did prove to be quite zealous last year. Wasn't it more about the distance of the transaction to the proximity of the gate rather than over the amount of the sale? I know some poor unsuspecting visitors got an Augusta Tour they were not expecting:)

When firemen start turning their hoses on buildings that aren't burning.

Yes, the price is irrelevent. You cannot sell sporting event tickets within 2700 ft (I think) of the entrance to the event. That goes for Braves, Falcons, Hawks, and all sporting events.

Selling Sand

Remember the guy who was arrested for getting a cup of sand at the National? I bet you could put a pile of sand close to the National with a sign carefully saying mementos of the EVENT. "Sand from Augusta." You could actually make money selling sand if you put it in little bottles close to the National. Dang, are we locals bad or what? Trying to think of ways to rip off the Master's tourists. Triple the motel rates and sell them sand. Put them in jail now and then for fine money, too.

Targets

I have to admit, this thought entered my mind as well.

The areas targeted so far don't seem to be high traffic-accident areas, and are located in mostly less-affluent sections of town. Folks who can least afford to be ticketed are being ticketed. As I said before, a $300 citation is just lunch money to some people, but to someone else, it means their children don't eat that week or medicines are not purchased.

While I commend efforts to harness the horrible driving that is rampant in Augusta, I have serious concerns about the areas that are targeted, as well the steep fines that some folk will incur. An overhaul of the amount for fines is long overdue - where the amount of a fine is directly related to one's income and the severity of the offense. This has proven to be an effective method in Finland and other European countries, including Germany, Switzerland, France and Austria.

Black on Black crime?

Most crimes are committed by persons of the same race as the victim. Do you not notice when whites kill other whites? It happens everyday. Open your eyes!

Truth Matters, of course we notice but black on black happens MUCH MORE often; a person would have be blind not to see it.

Stats

The U.S. Justice Department provides a breakdown of homicides by the race of both the victim and offender. Looking at the data for 2005 (the latest year available), we find that whites committed 48.0% of all murders and blacks committed 51.2% of all murders. However, whites outnumber blacks in the population. In fact, non-Hispanic whites are about 69% of the population and blacks are about 13%. These statistics alone, shows that blacks are 13% of the population, but commit 51.2% of the murders, indicate that blacks commit a seriously disproportionate number of murders."

So specsta is saying that laws...

shouldn't be enforced in areas where the people may not be able to pay the fines? How about this alternative...don't break the law and the fines are irrelevant?

Yes, and NOW it's time for YOU to look at the per capita rates of race on race crime.

NOW, what do you see.....????

Didn't give that a lot of thought did you????
