Second Amendment do-over?

  • Follow Letters

I do not own a firearm or plan on ever doing so. However, I support the Second Amendment and the right to have firearms. With all of the recent controversy, I have given much thought to the Second and its meaning.

Unlike some paranoid individuals who feel the Second was put in the Constitution to prevent government from invading our homes, taking our weapons and enslaving society, I believe the Founding Fathers had a much different agenda.

After the Revolutionary War, the militia was disbanded and sent home. There was no standing army, yet there were threats to our country’s northern, southern, and western borders. If a need arose that required a militia, they had only to conscript males who were already armed to form a new army. When the Second was written with this in mind, the writers also realized that the only weapons available were single-shot, blackpowder-and-flint, metal-ball muskets and pistols. If you were not Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone or Alvin York, you would be unable to hit the side of a barn with any consistency.

Today, imagine that the original Founding Fathers were tasked with writing the Second Amendment with the full knowledge of the past 200-plus years of world history – a do-over, if you will. I will pose 3 possible scenarios:

• The Second Amendment will stand as originally written.

• The Second Amendment is eliminated as not to be necessary today.

• The Second Amendment is rewritten allowing citizens to own handguns, rifles and shotguns. However, all military ordnance – including firearms, ammunition, grenades, missiles, land mines, etc. – would be unnecessary and illegal for private citizens to own.

I believe some variation of the last scenario would be enacted, especially when I hear the rampant paranoia of a few people who advocate having rocket-propelled grenades, Stinger missiles, hand grenades and land mines to protect themselves from who knows what.

It is scary, but fortunately those very bright Founding Fathers who got it right in their lifetimes would surely get it right again with a do-over to fit the current times.

I've said it before and it's

I've said it before and it's the TRUTH. Liberals DO NOT give half a crap about citizens civil rights, period. They champion themselves as the leader of civil rights because it confuses the people that don't know the truth. It's simply another disguise they use to further their agenda. They disguise themselves as the champions of civil rights, the poor, the elderly, children, etc; for no other reason than to make it difficult for anyone to oppose them. As I've stated, it's hard to stand against someone who CLAIMS they want to protect our innocent children, elderly and poor. But they couldn't care less about them in truth. They only reason they act as if they do, is because it furthers their agenda.

The overwhelming majority of genocides in history have been committed by leftists communist dictators. If this doesn't prove they DO NOT care about civil rights, what does? Those who fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it. Left wing organizations in THIS COUNTRY (Weather Underground for one example); have admitted they would "Do away" with those that wouldn't conform to their system. Does this sound like standing up for civil rights?

I'm telling you now, the left wing only cares about those person who are like-minded as them. If you disagree with their philosophy, they would gladly do away with you, if they could. They would gladly do away with the Bill of Rights; if they could. They would gladly do away with the entire Constitution; if they could. You can see the anger in their eyes when they are debated and confronted with truth. You can even sense the anger in their writings on sites such as this. The extreme secular leftists are full of hatred for this Country and each of us who stand for traditional America.

They DO want to take our rights away from us; and in order to take ALL of those rights, they must take away the 2nd Amendment or they will fail with the rest. But they CAN'T let the true agenda out of the bag too early; it has to be perfect timing, when the people are completely asleep and it's too late to wake up. They will dismiss anyone (such as me) who is exposing this agenda as "Nut jobs, Conspiracy theorists, Right wing radicals, etc". They MUST do so, until the right time. But pay attention, because every now and then you will see a leftist have a slip of the tongue and expose part of the true agenda. Then the hard leftists go into damage control saying the comment was taken out of context, etc.

Mr. Theiss......

…is a dreamer. And unfortunately, dreamers can place us all into government servitude.

Don't think for a minute that the founders could not see beyond the end of their noses. Because they knew the future would provide changes and challenges, they provided for a means to do exactly what Mr. Theiss proposes.

It's called the amendment process. All that is needed is for both houses of congress to propose an amendment by a two-thirds vote. It then goes directly to the states, by-passing the Oval Office (That was brilliant on their part.). Then, three-fourths of the state legislatures must approve the amendment and it becomes law.

Thats it, plain and simple. And it's been done, I believe at least twenty-seven times in our history. In one case, an amendment was even approved to overturn a previous amendment.

So, you see, it's really not that difficult if the people want it. The beauty of the process is that it discourages helter-skelter, knee-jerk abridgments to that great document in emotional response to contemporary events. You have to admire the wisdom of the founders. That is, if you have a head on your shoulders.

Of course, I'm sure there are a lot of folks on this board who are smarter than the founders were. We hear from them every day, over and over.

John Basil Barnhill - "Where the people fear the government you have tyranny. Where the government fears the people you have liberty."

Thomas Jefferson said the same thing but he was much more "wordy" when he said it.

Don't know about you, but I prefer liberty. I have fought for it, and won't hesitate to do it again if necessary.

II Corinthians 11:14 "And no

II Corinthians 11:14 "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light."

The word "transformed" in the greek means disguised. Christ is the Light of the world. Satan disguises himself as the light but he is a false light. Kinda the same as the left disguising themselves as champions of civil rights, children, poor and elderly. But they are a false light!!

Amazing the number of people who try to divine what the founders meant concerning the 2nd amendment, instead of actually reading what they wrote about it.

I guess they never intended freedom of speech to include the internet, television or radio either.

Who knows what things might look like in, say, 20 years...And we want to ban guns not knowing what the future holds for our children?

Come on...get serious.....

Angela; of course you know

Angela; of course you know this but WE don't want to ban guns, THEY do!! THEY are actually smart enough to understand banning firearms will NOT remove them from crazies or criminals. This is just common sense; which they do understand. So there has to be another reason, but it's a reason they can't just blurt out. It's no different than the religion topic. They can't just simply "come out" and say they don't believe in God or they would lose EVERY election in a landslide. They realize the overwhelming majority of Americans are Christian. So, what do they do? They CLAIM to be Christian themselves, but claiming to have a slightly different view of Christianity. Confusing people, without the people even realizing it. Confusing people into "buying into" THEIR version of Christianity, which isn't Christian at all.

They are doing the same thing with gun control. They say "We are supporters of the 2nd Amendment" but they want to control the interpretation of the 2nd Amendment, thereby controling the 2nd Amendment entirely. Some leftist activists will actually tell you they don't want citizens having firearms, period. But you will NOT hear this from the political leaders of the left, because they know it would be career suicide. Their leaders know; in order to acheive the goal, they must hide the agenda. Their leaders are smarter than the common secular leftist who just blurts it out. They must DISGUISE themselves as supporters of the 2nd Amendment, all the while tearing it down; right in our face. They must also DISGUISE themselves as Christians (In a Country that is majority Christian); all while tearing Christianity down, right in front of our face. They are brilliant, make no mistake about it. It will work......for a while!!

The main test of the ability

The main test of the ability to read is comprehension. A lot of people don't seem to comprehend what "shall not be infringed" means. If they don't like the meaning, they are welcome to try to amend the Constitution. Until then I am like Servpro when it comes to their little executive orders and any bogus law they may try to pass....."just like it never happened".

LIke I say many progressives

LIke I say many progressives are pseudointellectual. Tried to make some ridiculous argument that the Rep didn't support the Payroll tax cut too- when it turned out more Dems voted against it in 2010. But I do think Rep could take a page outta da Dem playbook. Like interest groups-the Dems treat women like walkin' vagina's (hate to blunt but it is the anatomical nomenclature so it isn't vulgar). The Rep should pass legislation for equal pay for women, assure opportunities for women in the job market, and although women are supposedly protected from discrimination the Rep could strengthen the legislation. Treat women like the incredible human beings they are rather than a sexual object-which is all the Dems believe-abortion and birth control and all women will be happy. I've always thought women the strongest gender-all things being equal.
