The increasing frequency of home deliveries fills me with fear for mothers and their babies (see The Augusta Chronicle, Dec. 16, “Special deliveries”).
Related StoriesI know by experience that there are times during childbirth when mothers and/or their babies may die if they do not have immediate access to the emergency care available only in well-equipped hospitals. Things may quickly go wrong even in low-risk deliveries.
To any expectant mother, I urge you and plead with you to deliver your newborn in a hospital that is prepared to handle any difficulty that may arise during childbirth.

Amen! We have fewer deaths of mother and child because of advancements in medical care. This is not the 1800s! Women who choose home births are just plain selfish or trying to follow the latest trend.
In addition to home births there has been an increasing number of parents opting not to immunize their children, which has already resulted in new outbreaks of measles, meningitis, and whooping cough, diseases which before had been virtually eradicated.
I wonder if the high cost of medical care discourages some from going to the hospital?
