Here we go again

Well, Augusta, you did it again! I supported a downtown riverfront stadium – a stadium to bring baseball fans closer to downtown Augusta.

I supported having a stadium on the river, which would have a much nicer setting than our current stadium set between low-income housing and an old jail. I supported a downtown stadium even though it meant driving a little farther to see the GreenJackets play.

In a way, downtown stadium supporters won. I will get to go watch a baseball game on the river, and I will be close to downtown for after the game. I will only have to drive about a mile or two farther than the location of where our stadium would have been. The extra distance won’t kill me, or anyone else for that matter. In a way, downtown stadium objectors lost.

Some of our elected leaders wanted to know why south Augusta couldn’t be an option. Some leaders wanted to know what we would do with an empty stadium on Lake Olmstead. Congratulations. You now have the task of answering those very questions and more.

Gould B. Hagler II

augusta, the disfunctional city

IDK why we keep getting these flare ups of we need this and this in Augusta. we really don't. we cant support what we have now and are wanting more? cant you just be happy with what you have and what you don't have? we have several theaters that are in bad need of repair. a baseball team and stadium that are just fine. who really cares that its near low income housing or whatever did you come to watch the game or stare at the walls? so much effort is wasted on things we don't "need". there is a mall that is dead, dilapidated and a hazard at this point. instead of fixing or replacing it lets just build another somewhere else because that part of town isn't pretty or whatever.

Guess who won? Das taxpayer. And probably Augusta's bond rating.

Critical needs before prestigious wants!

Being able to walk out of the ball park and continue walking downtown to a place eat, continue drinking, or watch a band jam out would have been awesome.

There is nothing wrong with investing in the city, and the stadium being one of them. If you're smart enough- you can use it like other cities use theirs, which is more than just a sporting event. So if you're capable of thinking outside the box, only then will you care where it's located.

Augusta state

Augusta state should use lake Olmstead for their home games. Their current one is horrible. Worst d-2 stadium Ive ever seen. Check out 2 nearby stadiums for example. USC Aiken and Lander.

Not so fast, Mr. Hagler

The ballpark, conference center, and parking deck (to be financed by taxpayers) will have to be approved by taxpayers in a bond referendum. There's plenty of time for debate.

I just think we are missing a

I just think we are missing a great opportunity if a potential future stadium is not on the river, whomever builds it.

As for Olmstead; no, you are not there to look at the surroundings, but it is the surroundings that keep SOME people away, just like the neighborhood the JBA sits in.
