Save jobs -- stop importing

  • Follow Letters

I missed the boat somewhere. It seems to me that everything you buy is made in China or some other foreign country. That’s most all brand-name products including tools; clothing; hunting and fishing equipment; sporting equipment; a lot of food products; kitchen appliances; lights; ceiling fans – the list goes on and on.

If we would stop this importing, we would have more jobs in America.

Why do we give away our money? We give Egypt military aid and money. We gave the leader of Afghanistan $25 million. This money could have been used for those in need in America.

Why did we spend billions on a little rover to land on Mars to send back pictures of rocks and dirt? Face facts – no one ever will live on the moon or any planet. Again, this money could have been used to help those in need.

One more issue: If I were the president, I would bring our troops home from Afghanistan so they could spend Christmas with their families and friends.

The Truth About Buying American

I understand most feel only buying American is a good idea. I don’t. Buying the best product cheap as you can is a principle of capitalism. If a country and its workers can produce something cheaper, so be it. The argument is often made that workers in foreign countries are paid very low wages and it’s not fair to American workers. But realize those workers are paid the prevailing wages in those economies. 50 cents an hour could be enough to support a family in some places where the standard of living is low. Take their jobs from them and their families may go hungry.

We give foreign aid to poor countries to maintain stability in the world, but what better form of foreign aid is there than providing jobs? By doing that we promote the private economies of these countries instead of feeding money to government bureaucracy that accomplishes little. Plus, the fact many gloss over is Americans are able to obtain necessary cars, clothing, furniture and all means of necessities cheaper.

Unions!

If all of the products mentioned in Mr. Black's letter were manufactured in the U.S., the Unions would worm their way in and a $9 T-Shirt at Wal Mart would cost $16. Major manufacturing corporations have to answer to their shareholders. It's a no-brainer. As RM noted, $100 per week for a Bangladesh worker is a living wage. That's a part time job at McDonalds in the U.S.

Of course, the Bangladesh worker may burn to death in a factory without adequate exits, but corporate America is willing to take the chance, and God forbid should Wal Mart ever suffer a sales loss.

My dear Mr riverman...

He said...
We give foreign aid to poor countries to maintain stability in the world,

Well now...just how is that working for us...??

I do understand your logic about jobs & buying goods from "other" countries BUT we have gone overboard with that way of thinking.....the only reason you can feel comfort in that thought is because YOU haven't been hit with job loss YET!!
Some jobs in our nation have a security blanket (food industry---personal habits nails-hair body massages etc....medical field--home building etc)let me say GOV jobs also....
We are sinking in job loss...some aren't able to pick up & leave..they need factory jobs...when we bring all of our soldiers back home we will be hit with a whammy.....we might see it next year...
Soooo while you can sit back & sip a nice one next to your pool.....many can't put food on the table for their kids....

When I read about 112 people burning to death in a factory providing cheap clothes for us ....you better believe I will look at more labels each & every time I buy something.....
We are sinking here .....& it makes me sick....we complain about unemployment but yet we think it is ok to send jobs away ....can't compute---can't compute can't compute...

Jobs

The man campaigning to increase jobs was soundly defeated by the man selling free stuff. We must assume that is what America wants.

SeenIt, I do pay attention to

SeenIt, I do pay attention to points posters often make and I knew you often write about keeping the jobs at home. In other words, I thought this would get your blood boiling. Heh.

But about the fire in the factory, when did it become our responsibility to check the fire codes in other countries? We don't expect foreign countries to check American factories for safety.

Saying American companies just want to buy cheap products is only another way of saying American consumers want cheap products that work well. American companies haven't supplied both sides of that equation.

I agree with your statement about foreign aid and that's why I brought it up. If you want our money earn it by making something we will buy. That helps all concerned instead of making people dependent on our handouts.

hah...I'm thinking allright...

Call me selfish but I am MORE concerned about job loss right here & right now.....we can't continue with unemployment payments.....we are fools for giving any tax breaks for jobs going to other countries...

The reason or reasons that Obama was re elected was because people see him bringing their JOBS back.....you run in a higher level of friends than most ......come down to earth where the majority of folks are....less than $50,000 a year...much less....struggling to pay bills & save their homes....
You know I respect your opinion....but I don't see a Rep. winning in a national election again til we see the world as a poor man sees it....jmo....but I'm sticking with it.....gotta go now..still luv ya...:)

"The reason or reasons that Obama was re elected was because people see him bringing their JOBS back". Those "people" must be blind or living somewhere else the last 4 years. Actually, many of them don't want jobs at all.

Our jobs are in other

Our jobs are in other countries because of unions, taxes, and government regulations. Anyone who thinks re-electing Obama is going to bring overseas jobs back to America is clearly.....well the nicest thing I can say is......not thinking clearly. Nobody voted for Obama because they expected him to bring manufacturing jobs back from overseas. A lot of people voted for Obama because they wanted him to raise taxes on those job creators, which will drive MORE jobs and investment overseas and that is exactly what they will get.

I really don't want to hear any complaints from Democrats about our jobs going overseas. They just re-elected the epitome of WHY our jobs are overseas. This election was about punishing people who are doing well, birth control, abortion, illegal aliens, gay marriage, and labor unions. Congratulations, you won. But you ain't got a leg to stand on to complain about our manufacturing jobs going overseas. If you keep trying to murder somebody sooner or later they will take the hint and leave. I'm sure all of those other Obama issues were important to you but don't stand there with your mouth open in amazement that our manufacturing jobs are continuing to disappear. Elections have consequences. You won your issues but JOBS were not one of your issues. You voted for higher taxes on corporations, more regulations, and support of unions and union bailouts so quit pretending you don't know why manufacturing jobs are going overseas. DUH !!!!

Face It America

We have priced our own selves out of the market and there are so many reasons we are failing to correct it.

Want cheap farm produce?
Want affordable clothing?
Want affordable cars that last?
Want affordable tools, garden equipment?

An since we are EPA limited in drilling in the CONUSA, where do we go to get affordable Oil to make GAS out of?

Answer: Import

So why are we importing instead of doing it here in the USA?

I feel a few of the answers are simple:
* Too many originally well meaning (I Hope) Federal Regulations that affect the ROI of businesses.
* NAFTA opening a backdoor into the USA Economy with little regulation on much less costly to produce goods.
*Constantly changing Federal Tax codes by the elected political party in power.
*Ourselves, wanting more to spend on NEWER toys and items. That we already have in older, but working order models.

Food for Thought
Since 1990 what has been and still is the single largest $$$$ item exported by the USA Economy?

War & War Materials.
An there is no ROI on War, just enormous overhead aftermath support. At $1,399,109,610,881 that the taxpayers in the United States have spent to finance both the War in Iraq ($809,124,811,810) and the War in Afghanistan ($589,984,799,071).
That's $1.399 TRILLION

Add Obama Care at $1,249 TRILLION.
The future taxes to pay for these are sure to place us in a death spiral.

OFF TOPIC
If I were president, and we were attacked by a small group. I'd deploy the best Dark Merc' teams and save $$$trillions$$.
Fighting every war with a large military force is financially stupid, when Merc teams can do the job at less than 1% of the normal cost and quicker.

Thanks grandpa Jones

for this...

China's share of world output and trade is expected to keep rising, with growth forecast at up to 8 percent a year over the next decade, far above U.S. and European levels. If the trend continues, China will push past the U.S. this year, a remarkable feat for a country so poor 30 years ago that the average person had never talked on a telephone.

Last year, Shin's Ena Industry made half his sales of rubber and plastic parts to U.S. factories. But his plans call for China, which overtook the United States as the biggest auto market in 2009, to rise fivefold to 30 percent of his total by 2015. He and his children are studying Mandarin.

"The United States is a tiger with no power," Shin said in his office, where three walls are lined with books, many about China. "Nobody can deny that China is the one now rising."

We are a tiger with no power & we are doing this to ourselves....one day my good Rep friends on here will say....

Making war does create wealth, for some.
Unpublished

That is the reason for war. The acquisition of wealth and land. The stabilization of global finances. War either makes the king richer or the country poorer. The king is usually insulated.

Exporting war creates wealth and jobs for government contractors.
Trips to Mars creates a lot of wealth and jobs for government contractors.

Government contractors sell the Pentagon what they need to fight bigger and better wars. Congress gives the Pentagon the money. The Pentagon gives the money to the government contractors.

Could someone explain how increasing regulations and taxes on businesses would give them incentive to keep their business here in the USA? Why do you think Boeing moved to SC??? Because it was cheaper to do business here. If it were cheaper to do business in Mexico, guess where they would be?
