All citizens can give thanks

  • Follow Letters

Americans will pause on Thanksgiving Day and give thanks to our Maker for our wonderful country.

The United States is evolving into a great country, but it has taken years to reach greatness.

After a few years, early Americans who were persecuted in their native land for religious reasons, became the persecutors themselves.

Some went to war to maintain slavery. After the slaves were freed, many were forced in peonage. Their poor brothers and sisters fought labor wars and formed unions to get out of the sweatshops. For years, they denied their mothers and sisters voting rights.

Foreign wars were fought to give other people freedom that some Americans didn’t have.

Factories and farms produced material goods and foods in abundance. Public schools and universities sprang up, although some citizens were first denied entrance. Production in material goods exploded and living conditions vastly improved.

We have had presidents who fought for legislation for the average person. President Franklin Roosevelt, during the Great Depression, saw the need for safety nets for working people and elderly citizens. President Truman issued an executive order to integrate the armed forces, and President Lyndon Johnson signed bills for public health care and civil rights.

As we observe Thanksgiving, let all be grateful for what progress has been made and continue to work for individual freedom, opportunities and respect for all our citizens regardless of their status in life.

Our country belongs to all its citizens, and no particular individual or group can claim or reclaim it. Young, old, black, white, brown, yellow, male, female, poor, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, independent, rich, disabled or whatever – we are all Americans.

To my fellow Americans, I wish each of you a happy Thanksgiving!

Tracy E. Williams Jr.

Devolution

I would say that our nation is devolving from the principles of individual liberty into a nation of serfdom; of dependency upon a government committed to transfer of private property from one person to another, based upon the whims of government bureaucrats.

Too much to ask?

Could we maybe give it a rest for one single day? Focus instead on family, food, and football? Please?

Culture wars will still be here when we all get back. Happy Thanksgiving, to my friends and to my fellows of the loyal opposition.

Lets focus on bloated bellies today

and diet infomercials the other 364 days. "Their bellies are their gods". Their offerings are high fructose corn sugars.

Wow, we have progressed, from thinking the "creator of choice" for our very daily existence to stuffing our guts in a tent outside of Best Buys for 36 hours waiting to buy a TV while watching football on and Ipad.

A once strong nation that has lost its compass in the swamp of self absorption.

We are teaching our kids that camping out means days and nights in from of a big box store waiting for an electronic device to go on sale. Our heroes are the first to force their way in the door.

We have evolved to the point of

gorging ourselves with food, while reclining, to the point of regurgitation, while watching sports events. Didn't the Greeks and Romans do this one already. A rerun with the same results. We keep watching this show and the results are always the same. The Fall of a Once Great Nation.

The first comment is right on

The first comment is right on the mark. We fought, struggled and learned our way to being the example of freedom to the world. Now the liberals want to give it all back because they do not have the courage to be free. As cowards they want the govt to do everything for them like the disgusting freedom hating liberals they are. Thanksgiving does not change any of that.

Thanksgiving as a way of life

Americans will pause on Thanksgiving Day and give thanks to our Maker for our wonderful country (Tracey E. Williams Jr.).

It'll be good to give God thanks on this day, but giving thanks ought to be a way of life, especially for us believers. "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:18 English Standard Version).

As Mr. Williams notes, we have improved society greatly by outlawing discriminatory practices that held people back based on their skin color. We should be thankful for that and should remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other pioneers who risked and even gave their lives so as to fulfill the dream of a colorblind society.

As Little Lamb notes, however, our society has been devolving. Instead of taking advantage of our antidiscrimination laws, which were meant to give us equal opportunity, we have been drifting toward serfdom--equal dependency on government largesse.

We've also departed from the very Maker we're pausing to give thanks to. Our rampant immorality has left us with serious problems such as single-parent homes where children must grow up poor and with little guidance except what's available in the streets.

If we would turn back to God and depend on him, we wouldn't be so dependent on government. In giving thanks this day, we should be especially thankful that we still have the opportunity to repent.

Give what a rest?

He who made creation and offers the gifts of love, grace and peace never rests.

Gloating over the demise
Unpublished

Gloating over the demise of our Constitutional republic on Thanksgiving is in very bad taste. Couldn't you give it a rest for one day? Save your Heil's and heel-clicking stiff armed salutes on special days like Thanksgiving and Christmas. You might prefer to commerate the birthdays of Lenin, Marx and Alinsky than honor the birth of Jesus but for those of us who have read and abide by the Bible instead of the various Satanic manifestoes, we know that the final chapter brings victory. I hope you live long enough to realize and perchance admit what horrible mistakes and destruction has been accomplished by your political heroes.l

Football Unites

We integrated the South because we needed football players. It was hard losing all our great black players to Michigan and Ohio State. Football unites us all. I talk to the black housekeeper guys at work all the time about football and they are into college football more than most. That's a change, but they now feel included in all the excitement.

In the early days of integration of the college teams in the South, it was touch and go. If SC State or Albany State had a good team, the big "white" schools would have a down year.

Go Tigers, Cocks, Dawgs, Jackets. Go integration.
