'Bye, Liberty -- hello, Nanny

  • Follow Letters

With deepest regret, we must inform you that Mr. Liberty has decided to check into hospice care.

Mr. Liberty was conceived in America more than two centuries ago and prospered robustly for more than 150 years. Then, what appeared to be just a minor cold slowly grew into full-blown pneumonia. Just as it seemed he would not recover, in 1980, he was enrolled in a fiscal fitness program. This led to a two-decade-long recovery, but, alas, it was only temporary. Although his energy levels had increased, his calorie intake had increased even more.

Four years ago, Mr. Liberty had to be placed on life support.

Mr. Liberty’s duties will be immediately assumed by Ms. Nanny. For the past century, Ms. Nanny has honed her craft in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. Ms. Nanny promises she will bring all the success she has experienced in those locations to our great land.

There is indeed a plague
Unpublished

There is indeed a plague coming but it ain't going to be locusts, we will not be that lucky. Just wait until the tax bill hits for Obamacare, the plague will be rampant poverty, massive unemployment, and cities on fire. Welcome to Greece, that is what we are now.

Lady Liberty

is no more. Our freedom has been eroded and the erosion will continue.
This continuing administration will not be satisfied until ALL are on the goverment dole in one way or another. This won't last long, either because there will be no one willing to work to pay the taxes to provide the support.

poor old guy

Sorry to hear about poor old Mr. Liberty. The sad fact, however, is that the old guy's time had come. The good news is that while the elderly Mr. White Liberty is in hospice, others are facing more encouraging prospects.
After Tuesday night, women across America can look forward to enjoying MORE liberty. African-Americans will have MORE liberty. Hispanics will have MORE liberty. Muslim-Americans will have MORE liberty. Gay and lesbian Americans will have MORE liberty. Non-believers will have MORE liberty.
Fortunately, Mr. Brock, liberty is not a zero-sum game. With just a slight attitude adjustment on your part, you will find you can continue to enjoy your own liberty and at the same time celebrate the renewed prospects of liberty for so many of your fellow Americans.

What about Asian

What about Asian americans-they too are a minority, suffer health disparities, and are discriminated against in colleges and the work place (more so than african-americans, women, or hispanics). Of all the issues of discrimination none are dramatic now than asian discrimination. Funny who you want to dish out liberty too. What about freedom from government intrusion-that is one everyone should want. What a racist comment to state Liberty is an ole white guy. I seem to remember about every nationality being here real early in american history-if one group dominated that's evolution-just like the USA will inevitably be an hispanic country with minorities of whites, african-americans, and asians. You can't beat evolution-ask the bacteria who won the arms race with antibiotics.

Funny how progressives

Funny how progressives believe that regulation is better. Yet the success of internat (as our economy historically) is because of little regulation. Personally freedom should apply to social and govt issues. I want freedom from govt with a smaller transparent govt not interferring in my life and beliefs or yours either. You can't talk about freedom for all and then support an oppressive govt. telling people what kind of soft drinks they drink or how large it is. I think America is big enough for all to enjoy their brand of freedomo-religion or atheism, marriage or gay marriage, smoke pot or not smoke pot, abortion or no abortion, etc. etc. etc. Progressives like to pick the winners who gets freedom. No more freedom to make money because wealthy people have been demonized and now govt rationalizes stealing because some people have accumulated said wealth-gee some freedom. That is taking freedom away. So don't talk about freedom if you don't really believe in it.

"America is big enough for all to enjoy their brand of freedomo-religion or atheism, marriage or gay marriage, smoke pot or not smoke pot, abortion or no abortion..." I am truly astounded that you apparently think this is a conservative and not a progressive view! Pray cite a Republican candidate in this past election who spoke approvingly of atheism, gay marriage, pot or abortion. I am waiting to be amazed!

I realize that those who so casually discard our freedom know not what they do....
I sincerely hope "no Republican candidate in this past election who spoke approvingly of atheism, gay marriage, pot or abortion"..
I am so proud!
May we continue to speak truth...work hard, and help those unable to do the same. Life - Liberty - Pursuit of Happiness....
America...Love it or leave it. Lots of countries will agree with those who believe that nanny state is more desirable than self sufficiency.

It's always the same, as the
Unpublished

It's always the same, as the new generation starts to come into their own, the reactionary parts of the older start bemoaning the coming "downfall of America." Today it's gay marriage and Obama. In the 60s, it was rock-n-roll, bikinis and the election of a Catholic. Before that it was the end of Prohibition and women's suffrage. Round and round, the wheel turns and I see nothing to suggest it'll stop anytime soon.

Whether you're discussing people, companies or nations, the only sure sign that something is failing is when it becomes incapable of growth and change.

Wrong again!

Winning an election doesn't make you right, it just means you won the election. History is replete with examples where winning resulted in devastating and horrible consequences.

Effete elitist liberal should try to understand that more dependency is IN NO WAY the same as more liberty. Just the very concept of getting more of other people's "stuff" (spreading the wealth) makes you less and less able or inclined to look to your own needs. Whatever incentive that you may have had to provide for yourself and those you care about gradually diminishes, day by day, and year by year until you become nothing but a shell of your former self.

In the end, you become little more than a dependable vote to assure and perpetuate the political system that conspired to take away your individuality. When enough citizens reach that point, then short of armed revolution, there is no way to regain your independence.

I think conservatives and

I think conservatives and progressives are both extremophiles!!!! I do not support either party-the closest thing would be a Libertarian. I gave up on the political machines and their idiotic drama long ago. I vote for ideas not parties. Which both parties are as bout useful as teats on cow for generating useful ideas-they are both lost in ideology with no hope of any real compromise that will serve Americans-just themselves and party. Yes I'm a bit jaded but experience is teaching beware the next fool elected into office. I have to wonder about their mental health and reasons they pursue political office-altruism would be a nice word to hear but what idiot would believe that.

Write what you can

Well writen, David. Simple and to the point. Write all you can, while you can, because before you realize it Ms. Nanny will take our freedom of speech away. There will be federal laws condeming those who speak out against the annointed one. History does indeed have a habit of repeating itself for those who don't learn the lessons, and we're seeing it more every day. One day the obama supporters will regret their decision, but that's what they get for pretending the danger's not real. Unfortunately, the rest of us will have to pay for their mistake. But after all, isn't that what Ms. Nanny is all about?

eel's 8:18am comment-----

Right now I am so angry and insulted for every hard-working, served and fought for, once and still proud, not wanting something for nothing, GOD loving---Americans! I wish you, eel, would tell me What liberties any of the people you spoke of, do not have as you and I? You and those like you are whiners, always have been, and always will be. You all will Never be satisfied. I think I am most angry because of the lack of respect for those that died to make sure America Is Liberty. Too bad so many are not thankful.................or know how those liberties were fought and died for!

Effete elitist opinion

Effete elitist liberal, of course! For monopolies to arise, taking away our valuable Nanny State, taking away rights of the LGBT's would be that road to serfdom and the entrenchment of plutocrats and theocons against the very liberty that such as that anti-Christian Jefferson helped grant us. Lamberth's argument from autonomy notes that we derive our rights neither from government nor from the Deity but from our level or consciousness as the UN proclaims in effect.
Keeping people alive and eating well is no manner of taking away any liberty or making people parasites upon society. One can be up one day and the next day down so that one pays for ones subsidy herself! No one stays on relief for more than a year and none on workfare for more than five years. Oh, and stop that old wives' tale of the poor who buy steaks and alcohol.

Just a little self reliance and/or self respect please.....

You can keep cattle alive and eating well too, but at least they contribute something back to society. If "one pays for one's subsidy herself" then why the need to constantly enact new legislation and constantly raise new taxes only to have the national debt soar to new and unbelievable (and un-payable) heights? No, parasites are exactly what they are!
