GRUA is marketing disaster

Just go ahead and rename it the Ricardo Azziz Community College of Augusta.

So – regarding the new name for the merged Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University – what’s the wonderful, sycophantic “compromise” we’re expected to swallow now? Georgia Regents University Augusta.

I personally have been involved in some of the most successful marketing and branding efforts here in Augusta since 1979: the Eye Guys, Carpet Country, WifeSaver, Taylor Auto Group, Century 21 Larry Miller Realty and many more.

This is not a compromise, folks – it’s a marketing and branding aberration of the first magnitude. It seems to portend plans to make Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University just another “branch” of the University of Georgia – which may have been GHSU President Azziz’s goal all along.

How much more marginalization of our city’s world-famous brand must we suffer?

What’s next? Georgia Regents University-Toccoa Falls? GRU-Americus?

Or the potential favorite of University System of Georgia Board of Regents Chairman Benjamin Tarbutton III – Georgia Regents University-Sandersville?

The only acceptable name choices should be the University of Augusta or Augusta University. Period.

You cannot “compromise” with a bunch of bullies.

without a coordinated protest

without a coordinated protest /sit in / strike / blue flu among asu / mcg students/ faculty / staff, the name aint gonna change (bar a miracle on behalf of pat roberson)

THAT compromise was the slimiest weaseliest thing they could have done.

What Was the Save The A Committee Told?

What was the Save The A Committee told? Were they threatened? The evidence is clear there is a significant back story here:

1. Announcement Article Quickly Removed - The major announcement article titled, "Augusta will be in consolidated university name, but not officially", prompted 113 mostly negative Comments was removed from the Chronicles' Home Page very quickly, within 1 day of its publishing, not a normal procedure for such a major story? Earlier benign titles remain on the home page related to the merger (that was Friday; all stories and the topic page link are gone today!). Why? Was Billy Morris pressured to remove this very vitriolic piece and links to any past stories?

2. Bunny Ears Picture Removed - The community has certainly not been reluctant to poke fun at the caricature called Azziz. The "bunny ears" picture where the McDonald's Golden Arches were framed over his talking head was priceless. In an earlier time, I think that picture might have been the lead picture and not removed within hours of publishing. Same question, what demands were made of Billy Morris?

3. Barry Storey and Nick Evans Demeanor - Do these 2 - Save The A committee members look happy, having "won" the battle?

Something happened that was not democratic. Azziz's past actions speak louder than words and have accurately labeled him as a despot, who quickly threatens anybody under his thumb, with impunity. If he convinced Deal to threaten the Save The A committee with repercussions if they commented on the "negotiations" or continued the fight, then that would account for the Save The A quietness and their acceptance of this "solution".

What was the Save The A Committee told? What is the back story?
