End entitlement mind-set

  • Follow Letters

The biggest question in the debate on the domestic economy is one the president must be forced to answer, and that is: What is his definition of the “fair share” that the “rich” must pay, since he is insisting the current system is grossly unfair?

To ensure the electorate understands the current situation, the following facts are provided:

• The top 1 percent of U.S. taxpayers pay 37 percent of all taxes paid in this country.

• The top 10 percent of taxpayers pay 70 percent.

• The top 50 percent of taxpayers pay 98 percent.

• The bottom 50 percent of taxpayers pay 2 percent.

With the above, the president is adding over $1 trillion a year to our deficit. So what is his answer for the future? Not cutting expenditures, but raising even more taxes on the “rich.” His proposed tax increases for next year include:

• raising the top tax rates for the “rich” from 33 percent to 36 percent, and from 35 percent to 39.6 percent;

• raising the capital gains tax from 15 percent to 23.8 percent;

• raising the dividend tax from 15 percent to 43.3 percent;

• considering raising the “death tax” from 35 percent on estates greater than $5 million to 55 percent on estates greater than $1 million.

It is time to say “no” to this tax-and-spend and “fairness” theory. We need to end the entitlement mind-set that controls the “bottom 52” percent. Government and government spending did not make this country great – we the people did!

Okay Joel, if you want to

Okay Joel, if you want to provide FACTS, why leave these relevant facts out?

Here is the 2010 distribution of the WEALTH of U.S. taxpayers:

Top 1%: 34.5%
Top 10%: 74.5%
Top 50%: 98.8%
Lower 50%: 1.1%

(0.1% absent due to rounding effects)

http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/RL33433.pdf

So let's look at those "unfair, entitlement" tax percentages again.

34.5% of the nation's wealth pays 37% of the taxes.
74.5% of the nation's wealth pays 70% of the taxes.
98.8% of the nation's wealth pays 98% of the taxes.
And 1.1% of the nation's wealth pays 2% of the taxes.

So what, exactly, is your point, Joel? Were you hoping to point out that people who think taxes are apportioned unfairly in America have no understanding of the distribution of wealth in our country?

How about just counting all

How about just counting all income as income? If you work for a living and make a salary, you pay the rate for your income level. If you sit on your rear end and live off of investments, you pay the rate for your income level. If you want to cut down on government spending, have government workers and government agencies do the work of the government, not private businesses. Let Defense Department factories build planes, missles, tanks, etc.. Then we could save a goodly chunk of the $1.1 trillion per decade just the top 5 government defense contractors are paid.

And if you sit on your rear and do nothing except receive a check from the government then you pay no tax rate because you have no income level.

With this process of thinking everyone will quit work and live off the government......why succeed just to pay all the taxes.

Until the entitlement crowd,
Unpublished

Until the entitlement crowd, and we all know who they are and which party they represent, get everything for free and never have to work or put any risk into anything they will not be happy. Until all hard working people and those who were willing to take some risks to succeed are run into the ground for being successful, the entitlement people will not be happy. They already get their food for free, their rent free or reduced, free education, even a free Obamaphone, yet they still claim they are being cheated. I guess all us working folks need to chip in some more of OUR money we EARNED ( I know, imagine actually earning your money, the dems would be so angry), so the entitlement folks can get a free mansion on the beach also. After that we need to ask them if there is anything else they need us to buy for them, after all I sure want them to be happy even though I know they don't give a damn about my happiness or well being, they just want their free money. I don't know about anyone else but I am pretty much fed up with the entitlement crowd, the democrats, and liberals and their repulsive divisive attitude.

Percentages

If 98% of the people are poor, then only 2% of the people will be paying 100% of the taxes. Then they'll really have something to complain about.

the government spin, hook line and sinker. The government created the "entitlement culture" to divide and destroy the "working middle class". The plan working great. Demonize the rich one day and the poor the next. Blame the bankers, blame the Christians, blame the schools. Confusion and chaos. Wars and mayhem. Wonder who is the author of this confusion and destruction? Who is making a mint from this New World Disorder?

Perspective

If a kid goes out and mows a couple of lawns to earn a few dollars to buy something he wants, and as he's heading home some neighborhood bullies take his money, that's called stealing. Obama's redistribution of wealth plan is stealing! You just can't hide that fact regardless of how much political icing you put on it.

I wish we would stop calling lazy minded people "entitlement folks". Entitlements are something you earn over many years of paying into a program, like Social Security, pensions, etc. You are entitled. Welfare and food stamps are NOT entitlements. Folks receiving them are NOT entitled. These programs are meant to give a helping hand until you can get BACK on your feet. Calling them entitlements only discredits and confuses the real entitlements.

This article has a really good title and describes a very serious problem in our society. It's a growing cancer, and if we don't dig it out it will kill us. Then where will those so-called "entitlement folks" be? They will be the first to be crushed. Obama must go, and then we need a fair tax system. I'm really sick of seeing half of what I earn go to government in one form or another, and then squandered.

propaganda

This is just propaganda from the 1% and corporate interests that so many have bought into. There is a considerable effort on the part of the 'haves' to influence those who take their information from the likes of faux and rush. Of course when your the one being duped you fight tooth and nail to 'justify' your BELIEF. The biggest 'dupe' is that the rich will not WANT to be rich if they have to pay a little more of their discretionary income, a supposition that has no application in reality, none. as Paul Welstone once said, don't worry about the rich and corporations when you legislate, they will ALWAYS figure out a way to KEEP their wealth, ALWAYS. My experiential tells me this is a true statement, while your BELIEF probably tells you different.

Money IS power in our system. So by that analysis and using the figures given in the LTE, who HOLDS the power in America ? It's not 50% of Americans, it is 1% of Americans, a situation that does not bode well for our future economic and social stability.

With that check are they not given a set time and a skill. Example: Mr. Jones we are going to allow you to earn this check. All you have to do is attend these classes so that you can learn a job skill. After X amount of time we will assist you in finding employment. Once you have that job you will come off assistance and be a productive tax paying member of society. If you fail to attend classes or are arrested for any felony charges your check will be suspended and you will be on your own. As our system stands now their is no responsibility. Imagine what your teenager would do if you just gave him cash every week after he finished or even quit school? He will never leave home and never make anything of him or herself. Whoever came up with this "just give them a check" idea should have shock treatments.

Unions

America did best (50's, 60's) when unions were a part of the mix in American politics. America's middle class (which makes America so great) has suffered since the 80's with the propaganda of the 1% that 'collective labor rights' are somehow 'evil' and against our founding principles. Propaganda, pure and simple, sucked up by a proletariat that has been duped . Look at the statistics, they bear out this argument.

the only real answer to dealing with the irresponsible and degenerates within our society is to articulate a plan to have LESS of them. The longer we put off an ethical plan to discontinue the proliferation of this class of people, the longer we will be sending out 'checks'. Some think that 'job training' is the holy grail, I don't think the facts on the ground bear that out.

Isn't the holy grail because, for the most part, they don't want to earn what they have they just want it given freely. Unions were great at one time. Now they are just greedy lobbyist that use your union dues to buy votes. I get propaganda from them telling me who to vote for all the time. I pay as much attention to them as I do to the rest of my junk mail. When unions fought for the 40 hour work week and better benefits and safer work places they were doing the right things. Now they are just as bad as the government. They usually protect the sorry man that won't do his job while those that do have to carry him. No longer do they police their own. They have become what they started out to be against, a HUGE BILLION DOLLAR CORPORATION!!

The 2010 Census Data had

the wage earners age 15 and over as 211,492,000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_income_in_the_United_States). The data is divided into 5 groups of those earning per year: (1) < $25K, (2) between $25K and $50K, (3) between $50K and $75K, (4) between $75K and $100K and over $100K.

The percent of wage earners in each group were: (1) 48.01%, (2) 27.23%, (3) 12.86%, (4) 5.29% and (5) 6.8%.

Thus, the biggest work force is in (1), 48.01% earn less than $25000. About 26% of this group earn the minimum wage ($7.25/hour) or less. The workers are, for example, carpenter helpers, farm workers, fast food cooks and servers, clerks, school bus drivers, etc. which see everyday out there trying to make ends meet.

I would guess at least half of the wage earners in (1) will fall below the income tax threshold and not pay any taxes. Why? They barely make enough to eke out a living. btw when my daddy sharecropped down in Wheeler County as I was growing up we did not pay any taxes, because we did not have hardly any money, although we had to work hard.

Last of all

Entitlements are like; Social Security, voting, breathing. and the Bill of Rights. NOT Government Food Stamps, cell phones, internet and Welfare. None of which were enacted to be a multi-generational lifestyles, that have now grown into a sub-culture of its own and demanding more every year.

If they want something, then do what a majority of us do. EARN IT or do without. .

Besides the word Entitlement is a Doublespeak term created to entrench the belief the certain people are "Entitled" to something that is not theirs before. So let us the correct, but less appealing description. Persons in need of assistance.

the philosophy should simple.
Provide a helping hand,
Provide Technical Training and basic educational "assistance".

Yes limited predefined help, but have a predefined period that says:
Do something with the help, or get off the pot to allow others to use it.

No one is Entitled to something that they did not pay for.

But many of us will and have helped many a person with less than we have that show they will do something with the help.

Let me assure the wealth envy

Let me assure the wealth envy types out there.....the more you try to take from the rich the less you will get. The "rich" are rich because they own or invest in making the things YOU ALL USE. Any tax you put on the rich will simply roll downhill into the price YOU PAY for the products they make. It's just like all of you who are happy WE bailed out GM and gave it to the unions. Have you noticed that that $20,000 car now costs $40,000? Folks you need to face the facts of life. You cannot tax the rich because YOU will be the ones that pay for it. It's just like Obamacare. The rich are not paying for Obamacare. The MIDDLE CLASS will bear the entire cost of Obamacare. Don't fool yourselves into thinking you can tax the rich. They get their money from YOU and they always will. You might raise their income tax by another 5% or 10% but they will just raise the price of your laundry detergent and everything else you buy by 5% or 10%. In the end, they will still make their money and YOU will be even poorer.

The unions, along with our tax policies and the EPA, drove our jobs out of this country. Yes, the unions were a boon to the middle class in the 50s and 60s. And then in the 70s and 80s they gave us unskilled laborers in Detroit making $35 an hour ($60 counting benefits) and the automobile industry has essentially gone bankrupt and has been bailed out by the government at least twice since then. And they will go bankrupt again when this last shot of government money runs out because we bailed them out instead of forcing the unions back into the reality of today's global economy.

Playing with the numbers

The numbers used mostly are deliberately / statistically misleading.

Naturally if a person WORKS, they make more money than a Person NOT working.

If They make MORE money WORKING naturally, They PAY More In Taxes.

If any one want equality, then abolish the Tax Code and replace it with a simple Percentage that EVERYONE pays top to bottom.
If our poorest can't afford that percentage, then isn't our government taxing too much?

But the Equalists & Socialists need to be exposed for using misleading numbers, in order to make people think those NOT Working should get more from those that do that nasty thing called WORK.

among the left there is considerable misunderstanding of the economy...1-people who have investment money already paid taxes on that money..2- since it has been already taxed..it ought to be taxed at lower rate on investments for 2-reasons..one we need investment capital to make the economy work. two-investment carry risk ever heard of capital loss ..stock market drops ..bankrupticies..my labor and yours carry no such risk ..we are paid hourly, weekly whatever usually no risk at all...also disposiable income that above and beyond the necessities of life is needed to grow the economy ..most jobs are dependant on disposiable income the more people who spend including the rich create jobs ask boat builders, vacation resorts etc..without desposiable income the economy stalls ..
