Neither man won debate

  • Follow Letters

What are the criteria for deciding the winner of a debate? The debate I watched last night looked more like two men trying their best not to say something stupid.

As I watched President Obama speak, it was painful to look at Mitt Romney’s face, which seemed to be frozen into a goofy grin. When Romney spoke, Obama looked like he was trying to decide what he was going to have for dinner afterward.

It brings me to a point of listening vs. looking. During the Richard Nixon/John F. Kennedy presidential debates in 1960, those who listened by radio thought Nixon won, while those who watched them on television thought Kennedy won. This just goes to show how our perception can be skewed when we add outside influences such as body language and looks. Just the way a candidate’s mouth moves during speech can influence whether we think his answer is a good one.

I still don’t understand how Romney got the nod as the winner. I thought they both talked a lot but neither of them said much. In fact it was one of the most forgettable debates I’ve ever seen. During the next debate, I shall only listen and see who I think does the better job.

One thing is for sure: One of them needs to start explaining his position instead of tiptoeing around all the same themes without actually saying anything. I get the impression it’s like a prizefight in which both contenders have only one goal, and that is to be standing when the final bell rings.

From Mr. Glovers decription

From Mr. Glovers decription of both of the candidates expressions during the debate, I'm going to make a guess he wanted Obama to win, but just can't handle the plain fact that Romney owned that debate right out of the gait. A blind man could have seen that Mr. Glover, even if you refuse to.

Another Debate??

I don't believe Mr.Glover was tuned to the same debate most of us were. All I heard and saw out of Mr.Obama was someone being putting on the spot. I can still see those "deer in the headlights" looks on his face.......(it really was kind of pitiful)

The debate revealed what the real Hussein Obama represents...a clueless, guiltless, gutless, non-patriot(yes, even if he was wearing a lapel flag this time), non-constitutional, non-vetted, radical, re-distributor (Where's your dollar?) who thinks America's greatness should be condemned and resolved (GD America). Trouble is 47% of free phoned Americans agree.

Bible based world view instead of a Humanistic world view? Show over substance is the preferred protocol for this society. Empty words, promises and lies. A stated platform of true issues with plans and answers is needed. Another rerun of late night talk show interviews says it all about our leadership. The future of America rests on the "canned laughs" of would be comedians wanting to be loved.

Romney did win, he acted very

Romney did win, he acted very well on stage. Of course he changed all his policies, no more 20% tax cuts for everyone, which he has been running onto give Americans more money and jobs. Romney likes a lot of ObamaCare, so he won’t repeal all of it. Just the mandate, but don’t worry. Somehow pre-existing conditions and keeping kids on your policy will still be there. Obama did a poor job, but Romney lied throughout his debate. And he was comfortable while doing it.

Romney seriously stands for nothing. But- that’s the liberal in him. Romney the lying liberal will do anything to advance his own objectives.

Techfan. Tell us what he lied about, and provide evidence that he lied. It's easy to simply make accusations like you just did. If he did, in fact lie, then why didn't Obama, who his followers say is so smart, call him out on any lies? Romney was quick to point out Obama's lies.

Please tell us some of Romney's lies. Obama got called out on his supposed government surplus, that is just really barrowed money, too (for a second time) balance the budget. On the David Letterman show Obama didn't have a clue what the national debt was. Obama got called out on his lies about what raiding Medicare of $170 billion to finance Obama care really meant, Obama will cut compensation to health care facilities and providers further hurting elderly citizens. These types of things are what hurt Obama. Stephanie Cutter admitted that the tax cut Romney purposed will not add $5 trillion to the deficit.

Plutocracy vs Democracy

In the end that is the choice we are deciding upon. an unbridled free market system based upon 'get as much as you can' because it is your 'right' vs. a system where the more wealth you amass, the more you owe the Nation, a system that served America very well for the greater part of the 20th century, a time when ALL boats rose with the tide. Yes, endearment to entitlements is a problem, but the medicine promoted by the plutocratic class will only make the patient sicker.

Dependent on the interest

Dependent on the interest group both Romney and Obama have changed their tune-it is called pre-election rhetoric or say anything to get elected. Both have lied to the public. I seem to remember Clinton adamantly saying he would not raise taxes but quickly did after being elected. Then Bush I and read my lips which he renigged on a number of issues. It's politics. Get a clue.

I seem to remember in 08'

I seem to remember in 08' Obama rebranded himself from liberal to a Moderate, which the last 4 years has demonstrated was fanciful fabrication and lie. He also promised Hope and Change which were a huge lie. Then a list of other promises he failed to accomplish. Yikes seems the comparisons between the two become more neutral. Obama as Bush lite and Mitt as Obamanesque. Some choice.

Yeah wealth redistribtion

Yeah wealth redistribtion mimics nature where all the animals sacrifice for others. So lions just go without eating to make sure there are plenty of antelope, and antelopes don't eat grass because we don't want to run out of grass. We can't have competition-oh my that would allow natural selection. See nature works by the strong sacrificing and supporting the weak.So often a strong healthy antelope will go let the lion eat him rather than a weaker, diseased, or juuvenile animal. Fitness will now select for the weak. Progressives are anti-evolution. hee, hee, hee.

Another Romney straw man

Another Romney straw man appears. Faithson wrote "In the end that is the choice we are deciding upon. an unbridled free market system based upon 'get as much as you can' because it is your 'right' vs. a system.... “This is NOT what Romney advocated in the debate. Romney specifically talked about problems with legislation the Democrats had passed. A good for instance is the Dodd Frank Bill. Romney didn’t like the fact that the Dodd Frank Bill never stated what a "qualified" loan buyer is. So some government employee with the IQ of an earth worm can then say to a bank official "well you aren't lending to "qualified people “so you owe us so much in fines'. Now banks won't loan money because they fear what happened to Gibson Guitar. If you forget the government regulators have harassed Gibson Guitar and cost the company a bunch of money and years of litigation http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405311190389590457654294202785928... Romney stated that regulations need to exist but be understandable and uniformly applied.

As far as honesty in the debate goes, both candidates stepped on the truth from time to time, but in all candor, Romney was wearing bedroom slippers while Obama was trampling on the facts with combat boots. I mean really, a 5 trillion dollar tax cut??? That figure is a complete partisan construct by Obama campaign operatives that can't be substantiated no matter how you disect Romney's past statements. Even Obama knows it's a lie. If not, then he's not only mendacious, he would have to be stupid. While BHO comes nowhere close to living up to his billing as a great mind, he's smart enough to know better.

Should we vote for the Obama

Should we vote for the Obama who said you shouldn't raise taxes during poor economic growth, or the Obama that wants to raise taxes during economic growth that is even poorer than when he made his first statement?
