The real John Barrow?

  • Follow Letters

U.S. Rep. John Barrow’s recent political ads suggest that he is playing the “middle.” He votes with Republicans 54 percent of the time, but he often talks about how often he voted along his party’s line.

So my question to Rep. Barrow is: Where are his loyalties? If he says, “To the Democratic Party,” then why isn’t he sending that message?

I am an African-American and a Democrat – also a retired soldier of the U.S. Army – and I can honestly say Barrow is a driving force for those of us who are veterans. But we must ask that the real John Barrow please stand up, because we have all been trained to follow a proven and honest leader.

Joseph Diggs Sr.

John Barrow

I, too, have been frustrated by Congressman Barrow’s record. However, I must say in consideration of the gridlock we have in Washington created by the Tea Party/Republicans, I would much rather have someone who is willing to vote with either party than a representative who is so beholden to Grover Norquist and the Tea Party that he never considers the issues but only the party.
Given the economic hole our nation was in when Mr. Bush left office, it required drastic measures. I would not normally be in favor of bailouts. But this was an unusual situation. Let’s get over the bailout and admit that had it not occurred things would be much worse than they are now.

I am not sure why Democrats have not run ads showing some of the Republican law makers who opposed the bailout and stimulus plan but were only too happy to pose with giant checks when the money landed in their state.

When my family has had to make hard calls to make ends meet, we did too things: Increased income/revenue and only spent what absolutely had to be spent. The deficit problem requires a balanced approach. Don’t blame this president for run-away spending. He has spent only what was required to stop the bleeding. The guy who held office before him was the one who spent us into oblivion with two wars.
