Augusta Regents University?

  • Follow Letters

The “apples and oranges” merger of Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University is a fait accompli. Now the challenge is to find the right name.

The Georgia Board of Regents and GHSU President Ricardo Azziz are wedded to the term “Regents,” for “Georgia Regents University.” Most of the rest of us see the logic of including “Augusta” in the title for all the reasons so eloquently expressed in previous communications. It is time for a compromise.

I suggest the name “Augusta Regents University.” Something new, something old. Tradition mixed with opportunity. Moreover, people both near and far will know where it is located.

ARU no better than GRU

The name Augusta Regents University will probably attract a lawsuit just as Georgia Regents University has done. Why mention the regents at all?

We need to make this

We need to make this nonpartisan but political. A massive voice of all Georgians expressed their opinions to a committee which had already made their decision (in all likelyhood). We need to get ASU and GHSU students to make YouTube videos (that will hopefully go viral) and a massive show in Atlanta at the Capitol. We draw enough unpopular attention then you know the cockroach politicians will come out of the wood work to assist to try to be popular heroes and get votes. The Govenor gets enough bad press he will likely shift because of the liability. We need to make support of the present name a liability. Sueing them over the name is a good start-because of legal costs. If they appear as fascists rather than serving the needs of Georgians then it is political suicide. It can't just be local but needs to be a state drive. YouTube can go along way to popularize this issue. How bout a wag the dog students. If the discontent just stays in Augusta we've lost. We need the whole states attention and nationally.

VA suit

Hopefully this will make them realize they did the wrong thing. "Regents" has no place in the name.

This is a good letter, and Dr. Williams has provided a thoughtful compromise. However, I share the opinions of my fellow commenters above who have rightfully discerned that the term "regents" speaks to wrong values for students, faculty, and the community. For the members of the Board of Regents to name a university after themselves is vainglory; a monument to inflated egos with no accompanying excellence demonstrated by them in the world of academia. They are successful men and women to be sure; but their positions on this board were awarded by political patronage, not excellence in academic service.

You know how many schools hire consultants to come up with mission statements, vision statements, and slogans to aid in recruiting. Well, the word regents in the name writes its own slogan:

GEORGIA REGENTS UNIVERSITY
An Institution Dedicated To Vanity

You can imagine the slogan on the school's letterhead, on the walls at entrances, in the catalog, in recruitment literature. Vanity; all is vanity.

A good attempt at compromise ...

The letter writer is well-intentioned. But the problem so many have in the name is with the "Regents", not the inclusion of "Georgia" or "Augusta" in the name. The name "Regents" has brought on the lawsuit.

The Board of Regents (except for one statesman on the board) should be collectively and individually embarrassed over this affair.

All of the state colleges

All of the state colleges and universities are the Regents', .....or not. Let's go all out and put Regents in all of their names. Let's start with changing UGA to Regents University of Georgia.

s' left off in honor of the incorrectness of the currently assigned name of GRU.

Just told my husband what I just posted. He said, "That's good. Get 37 lawsuits going instead of just one."
