Name-changers 'cowards'

  • Follow Letters

I have known Augusta Chronicle Publisher William S. Morris III for about 35 years. I always have known him to be decent, honest and honorable. I commend him for standing up for the principles he holds and resigning from the position he held on the Georgia Health Sciences University Board of Visitors, in protest of combining Augusta State University and GHSU under the name “Georgia Regents University.”

It appears that the Georgia Board of Regents might have been considering this move when they brought GHSU President Ricardo Azziz from the “Left Coast” to “advance” the university. It also appears that this renaming process is like Obamacare, in the words of U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi: Pass it to find out what’s in it.

If the regents want to ignore local branding, then they also should eliminate the word “Georgia,” making it “their” university, or Azziz University, then scuttle back to their holes like the cowards they are.

I have changed my will, wherein all my estate – while not huge, but in the six-figure category – was to have gone to local cancer research. It now will go to the University of Cincinnati for the same purpose. Likewise, my body was to have gone to GHSU, but that will not be happening now.

I decry Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver’s spineless positions, and similar views of other so-called leaders.

George Dean

There's a philosophy used by some that says they must get along with Azziz because of their jobs, political positions and aspirations. This philosophy is the antithesis of integrity and honesty. What happened to people believing courageously standing up for the right thing is to be admired?

"What happened to people.....

....believing courageously standing up for the right thing is to be admired?"

It's not dead, but it's dying for sure. It's gone the way of political correctness, metrosexualism, the feminization of men, and narcissism. In many circles, a person standing on principles is mocked, ridiculed, and scorned.

Not to worry though, Riverman, we still have the George Deans of the world who see something wrong and take a stand against it, even in spite of the critics and naysayers. Pity Deke Copenhaver and Nathan Deal aren't among that group.

University of 'A'

The best thing we could do is bulldoze all of Harrisburg all the way from Walton Way to the Kroc Center and from the Kroger on 15th to the foot of Summerville. Then sell the land to GHSU.... and expand the campus so that MCG and Augusta State can expand for many years to come. This would be the biggest economic development success in the CSRA. Phase 2.... use the same bulldozer and clear the land between Paine College, 15th Street and Walton Way. Incorporate Paine College into the University of 'A'.... and this master plan will put us on the national map.

Discussionstarter, maybe the 15 absentee landlords who have a stranglehold on Harrisburg would be happy for your vision.

Those long-term residents and newcomers who have had to struggle against known drug houses and neglect by city leaders will just have another adversary to contend with.

Thank goodness Georgia has one of the strongest property rights statutes in the country.

Nice letter, too bad Azziz has vowed to never read the Augusta Chronicle but he wants everyone to be "open-minded" about the name change.

Who wants someone in leadership whose disposition is "if you're not going to tell me what I want to hear, I just won't listen."

It's a certainty

,,, someone who loudly declares they "will never," not only will, but will do so more consistently than the casual person. I suspect he has the Chronicle smuggled in copies of "Ego Digest," or the "Autocrat's Daily," and avidly reads every piece of copy that has his name. Is there a blog name of "Voiceofthedivine?"

("Gratefulmother" has been taken.)

So has "hotsaucemom," though I suppose it could be Dr. Azziz is the one who's taken it.
