Name reflects 'selfish pride'

  • Follow Letters

I am a student at Augusta State University. I am heavily involved on campus and in the community. I dedicate a great amount of hard work and heart to this university, and the way this name change is being handled is atrocious and a slap in the face.

The Board of Regents is acting like there was no school here at all before this consolidation. Yes, there will be one new university at the end of the consolidation, but there has been research, tuition-paying students and caring faculty at both institutions long before they decided to consolidate. If the regents want to make a school and name it after themselves, they should legitimately create a school from nothing. Then they can name it whatever they please.

The name “Georgia Regents University” reflects nothing about the university that these students, faculty and staff have built. It reflects nothing about the future of this new institution. It only reflects selfish pride and ruthless ambition.

I have supported this merger wholeheartedly, but if the way this name change is being handled is an indication of how the rest of this merger will be dealt with, I cannot and will not support it.

I implore those who have the power to change this name. You have broken the trust of an entire community. Regain it by admitting your mistakes. Do not alienate us any longer.

Dear AC Editorial

Dear AC Editorial Board,
Could you please run a few hundred more letters referencing the name change at the local universities. We don't quite have a feel on the community's opinion. Hopefully, by the end of the year, once everyone in the CSRA has written, we can narrow down their feelings.
Thank you

Good Letter

Thank you, Audrey, for a thoughtful letter. Though I have never been a fan of naming things after retired and dead politicians, I can understand the practice since friends like to honor their friends. For example, Augusta commissioner Jerry Brigham pushed through a resolution to name a fire station after his friend, former Richmond County commissioner Herb Beckham. Beckham was still living at the time, but has since died. For some reason, it brings comfort to some people to name buildings, roads, bridges, even organizations after retired and dead people.

But for a board of directors (who come and go) to name a state university after themselves is the basest act of self-aggrandizement seen around here for a long time. It exposes the vanity, the narcissism, the arrogance of the Board of Regents. It also shows how easily a large board of everyday citizens can be manipulated by a master manipulator who hides the truth, i.e., Dr. Azziz.

To the Board of Regents, we citizens of this city, this region, and this state are merely dirty, ignorant peasants whom the regents delight to spit on and mock. Audrey, I like your assessment that the proposed name reflects the regents’ “selfish pride and ruthless ambition.” They have ambition, all right; but their goal is ignoble and harmful, especially to their own souls.

an uncounted number of letters should be written DAILY concerning the self-centered, "paragon of virtue" azziz. he needs to return the university name he and his "regents" have hijacked.

A name that stinks..........

Keep on printing those letters AC! Maybe, just maybe, that "skunk" of a name will be changed...............I said from the get go that the regents naming the university after themselves was a selfish, high-and-mighty thing to do.
