I have two thoughts on the current discussions about the name for the newly combined Georgia Health Sciences University and Augusta State University.

First, since opposition centers on the absence of our city’s name, why not consider a solution already in use all over the country by simply applying the city name to a newly constructed component of a University System – in our case, the University of Georgia at Augusta?

If there is some administrative barrier to this, or if it stirs up new controversies, consider another possibility: We’re not the only city in the state to face the problem of merged schools. Perhaps Augusta would accept “Georgia Regents University at Augusta” as one of a new group of institutions within the University System.

"Regents" must go

No, Mr. Hudson, your suggestion of Georgia Regents University at Augusta is unacceptable. It is the word Regents that causes the offense. This university does not belong to those political hacks called regents. They do not deserve to have their name on even the smallest of technical schools.

I don't understand why that concept of not being a part of UGA people can not understand. Part of the university system, yes. But Augusta State is NOT a branch of UGA.

Regents can name it UGA Augusta, if they wanted ...

The Regents do have the option of changing the names of all senior universities to UGA ____. Tons of precedent for this in other states near us ... Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Does anyone have a misunderstanding between UT-Knoxville and UT-Chattanooga or UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC-Charlotte? Of course not, the location (city or town) is the key. So why try to disguise it?

What's in a name? Regents? Who are they?

Thank you, Little lamb! I have been saying the exact same thing! Just how do these, these,....whatever you want to call them, get off thinking "they" should have a name in this? No sense can be made out of it, not to me anyway.

KSL, Beats Me

It would be a whole different ball game if all the state schools became part of UGA. Currently all schools including Ga Tech, Ga Southern and Ga State are part of the University System of Georgia...not part of UGA and they're not about to become part of UGA.
