Don't let ASU fund-raising suffer over name controversy

  • Follow Letters

The name for the new university being created by consolidation has prompted much concern in our community, and some individuals are calling for the withdrawal of their financial support from both institutions in order to make a statement about the name, or the naming process.

As the community co-chairman of A Day for Augusta State University, please let me urge you not to take this course of action. The “A Day” campaign has been an instrumental source of fund-raising by the campus and community for the past 18 years. Withholding your donations punishes the students, faculty and staff of ASU for something that is not under their control.

We now find ourselves in an unfortunate dilemma – the balance between support of a loved entity and frustration with the current situation. The community should not let itself succumb to action that directly affects the important mission and goals of Augusta State University and the futures of many students who will be attending this fine institution.

We all take great pride in our historic university. The Day for ASU campaign supports such things as scholarships; faculty and staff development; community service projects; and many academic programs.

The on-campus campaign began last week and is being spearheaded by Athletic Director Clint Bryant. Columbia County Deputy Schools Superintendent Sandra Carraway and I are co-chairing the community campaign, which begins in mid-September. We all are working diligently to reach this year’s goal of $555,000 by Oct. 12 – A Day for ASU.

I urge all who care about Augusta State University to uphold all that we have built over the years by continuing their financial support of our great institution. Whatever the name is, or may be, it is our university; let us not punish the innocent for an ill-conceived vote by the Georgia Board of Regents.

Please support ASU’s Day campaign by sending your contribution to A Day for ASU, Augusta State University Foundation, 2500 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30904. Your donation does not endorse a name – it strengthens the mission and success of our university.

We have been, we are and we will be a Jaguar Nation!

I encourage anyone who

I encourage anyone who supports ASU to make a donation to the A Day Campaign by putting your donation in escrow pending Tariq Azziz's resignation.

Sorry David, I don't see it

Sorry David, I don't see it happening. It's obvious that the Board of Regents doesn't need community support for Project Azziz, but you might try sending a fund-raising letter to the BOR - maybe they will donate.

Send donation to RU instead

Don't waste your money. ASU no longer exists. Until this fiasco is rectified, shift all contributions to: Regent University; Office of Advancement ADM128; 1000 Regent University Drive; Virginia Beach, VA. 23464 (memo your check "Legal fund - GSU name infringement lawsuit") When the name becomes University of Augusta, donations will pour in.

Boycotts work. But boycotts require commitment. Boycotts changed the history of South Africa.

does not change the lie and make it truth. We can live with decision is not the same as financial support for the decision.

This is sad, but ...

It is sad that the BoR can't hear JCA, AC and ASU alumni, commissioners, newspapers, numerous and negative comments about the insult to the college and the community heritage. Withholding donations seems to be the only form of public expression that the BoR might understand (that and the loss of votes for Gov. Deal if he runs for re-election). On the other hand, if the BoR comes to its senses and makes a strategic name change and Dr. Azziz humbles himself before the BoR' decision and the community applause, the donations may pour in.

Are you going to change the fundraiser to the “G Day” campaign; or do you prefer the “Grooo Day” campaign, David?

The Dark Cloud

$555,000 is pocket change for Azziz; he has his sights on 6 figure and 7 figure single donations, from donors who don't care about the controversy. He may have trouble finding these people as a lot of donors start with small giving and then build their philanthropy as they become successful. But if you surround the institution with such negativity, such angst from so many quarters, there are plenty of other worthy and appreciative causes to give. Donors need to feel they are listened to, that their opinions are valued. Azziz communicates by word and deed exactly the opposite.

The dark cloud Azziz has brought to Augusta MCG and ASU will prevail for a long time, even with him humbling himself (I guarantee, that will not happen). The ultimate solution for the good of the institution is for Azziz to take his leave or be ushered out. The cancer must be excised.

It will take a long time for people to get over Azziz's absolute arrogance. It is going to take some pinching in the pocketbook.

The perfect way to protest

The students et al have already been hurt. No one is angry at the schools themselves; people are upset at the administration. The only way to get to the administration is through their pocketbooks. Withholding financial support is the only leverage the citizens have. It has already been proven that the admin has no regard for the community's goodwill.

Why would the alumni of

Why would the alumni of Augusta State University send donations to Georgia Regents University?! That is not our school! Our school no longer exists.

Very disappointed that the Alumni Association chose not to take a stand with the new name issue. This is something that is very important to alumni and they should have taken a stand against it on our behalf.

Still ASU

We are still Augusta State University until June 30, 2013, even if on paper we are the "New U" on January 1. Withholding contributions only hurt the current students, staff and faculty who love the university as ASU. The athletic teams are still competing as ASU through June 30, 2013. This is the last year of ASU, so it makes MORE sense to continue to give money this year, and withhold next year, when it actually ISN'T ASU. We are all holding on to ASU as tight as we can, don't stop support now, while it is still the ASU Jaguars. Now, more than ever, is when we need to show who we are...and if you have never given money, quit pretending that you are stopping giving now. GO Jags!
