Let legislature change name

  • Follow Letters

Isn’t the easiest, quickest and most effective way to reverse the Board of Regents’ terrible Georgia Regents University name decision to have the General Assembly vote to change the name to the University of Augusta? This would immediately reverse the unpopular decision.

The board is a powerful body, but the General Assembly is more powerful. Our local legislative delegation could and should simply introduce legislation renaming the school as soon as the legislature reconvenes. Senators and representatives from other parts of Georgia won’t care about the issue, and probably would support the CSRA delegation’s proposal in return for promises of future support for their local projects.

Even if Gov. Nathan Deal vetoes, any veto can be overridden.

Anyone running for state Senate or House of Representatives in the CSRA should be asked if they support this idea, so we can take their positions into account when deciding how to vote.
