Regents should decide name

  • Follow Letters

Am I the only person who is sick and tired of all the negative press regarding Georgia Regents University, Georgia Health Sciences University President Ricardo Azziz and Board of Regents Chairman Ben Tarbutton III? I do not think so.

Let’s get on with it, people. The merger is one of the better ideas to happen in Augusta in years, as I stated in my letter of Jan. 27 (“School merger makes sense”).

A university’s reputation will be built by its good works, great faculty and its graduates’ accomplishments, not by its name.

No one refers to Oxford as “Shoe U,” and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is a real tongue-twister. Cambridge University is named for a bridge over the river Cam running through its campus.

The regents have the right to call our schools anything they want. They are the regents’ responsibility, not The Augusta Chronicle’s or the former students’.

So, calm down and step up to support the school, its chosen leader and the regents. It’s going to be a grand step for our community!

George Sheftall

exactly

Like I have said, A long time ago who would have wanted to attend a University named DUKE? Now it's one of the best medical schools in the country. I'm sure when Johns Hopkins name was suggested it wasn't all that well recieved. Mayo Clinic for example. Was that a place where mayonaize was manufactured. I like the idea of a neutral name that can be built on. Sure it will take time but all the ingredients are ther for a top tier school. I'm sure 20 years from now Georgia Regents University will be nationally known.

Board of Money-Givers

Ever wondered who the "Board of Regents" really are?

Between all 18 of them, they have a grand total of zero (as in zilch, nada, none) experience in higher education.

Their only "qualification" is being faithful lapdogs to the present and former governor. Donations to political candidates are a matter of public record.

Want a good laugh? Read their "qualifications"...

ok. the name's awful, but its beside the point

ok. the name's awful, but its beside the point

at this point people are more disgusted with the handling of the name. we were lied to. money was wasted. azizz was in charge of the name the whole time.

regents deflect to the governor. governor to regents. azziz to regents.

who really orchestrated the merger? months ago a morris news contributor attributed it to "City leaders"... whether they are elected or self appointed, he didn't say. Huh.

And will this merger save money? Its already cost dozens their jobs. That was just for the name change from MCG to GHSU. And Azziz ALREADY has more (higher paid) administrators than Rahn did.

We can see a growing preference for out-of-state and foreign applicants who pay much higher tuition rates than in-state students... the numbers show it at Georgia Tech.. now we'll be seeing that here in the 7-0-6.

Cuts to the state's higher education department have to be made up somewhere.. why not with the blood of future student earnings and federal tax dollars.

Historic Preservation Society

We have the Augusta Historic Preservation Society dedicated to preserving historic structures in town. There's a reason old things are treasured. It preserves our culture. I submit the name of an university is such a historic structure. Don't flatten it to build a McDonalds.

By the way, the LTE is so over the top, I'd think it were a spoof it he hadn't written before.

The Medical College of

The Medical College of Georgia was a nationally known name. How else would my ex have known about it in Iowa. Same with Augusta College (at that time). I graduated from high school in North Carolina. I have found out recently that at least 3 of my class mates attended Augusta College. And this was before Al Gore invented the internet. Seems to be a case of trying to fix what ain't broke.

One of Biggest Mistakes in History of Augusta

This new name is one of the biggest mistakes a public official has made around here in a long time. The other that comes to mind is Paul Broun saying I-3 from Savannah to Knoxville via Augusta couldn't go through North Georgia which effectively killed the highway for Augusta.

"It’s going to be a grand

"It’s going to be a grand step for our community!"

It could be a grand step. The Regent's promise funding and support for a school that might be bigger than U.GA. in Athens; just after they savage M.C.G.'s alumni base (name change) and divert resources to Athens for a U.GA. medical school.

Hope for the best! Plan for the worst!
