Public aid can be put to work for the public

  • Follow Letters

For years now, President Obama has been running around the country stating that he wanted to level the playing field that separates the rich from the poor. In doing so, all of his freebies have created a new army of people who depend on the free handouts from the Enabler-in-Chief.

Having said the above, my sister had a novel idea regarding those who sit on their derrieres and get aide from the government, towns and cities.

She believes those who can work and are just sitting around all day with nothing to do should be put to work and earn their handout. They can pick up papers along the highways and roads and beautify their communities.

My idea was to put this army of unused people to work in government, towns and cities that have skeleton crews because of cutbacks in services until they can get back on their feet. If people can be taught a job such as gardening, painting or cleaning, then they may have the wherewithal to want to start their own businesses.

From my perspective, there are numerous jobs that those collecting welfare, food stamps or what-have-you can fill to lift their self-esteem and help their communities.

Instituting such programs would save many communities a lot of money and keep them from falling behind in their maintenance programs, while giving someone a chance to earn what they have worked for.

How About Just Helping the Poor

Well, Mr. Topliff, let's hope unemployment or desperate circumstances never come knocking on your door, because it won't be until that moment that you realize how humiliating it is to ask for government assistance. All of your preconceived false notions about poor people and welfare recipients will vanish, when you have to walk a mile in their shoes.

Also, picking up roadway trash and cleaning out ditches is what people who have committed misdemeanors do to make restitution. Being poor is not a crime. Your idea of forcing someone to work for government assistance is rather ignorant. Did you factor in daycare costs, transportation costs, lunches, etc. to be able to do this below-minimum-wage job? Where is that money gong to come from?

So what you're basically saying is because you are poor, you must spend money in order to get money. I can only shake my head at something so ridiculous.

Have you completely lost your

Have you completely lost your mind? You expect folks to actually work for government assistance? You expect these kids who have watched all those before them live off the government to just start earning it. Oh no, that's just crazy! When would they have time to drink and make more babies to keep the system thriving for business.
Now on a serious note. Welfare was designed to keep folks down. Why better yourself when it's given to you. This cycle has been going on for decades. Welfare was not designed for the majority that receive it. It wasn't long until folks started demanding it because they felt entitled to it. Now we have a hugh mess on our hands.

Spectra you must not have to

Spectra you must not have to hire people with the comments you make. The ones on welfare will not work and if the do they want no taxes taken out. IMAGINE THAT. My insurance company will not let me work uninsured subs that get a 1099. They require they have insurance and they do not want to purchase it. The only way to work them is to put them on payroll and start taking ss and taxes. Now one of my installers will not call me back because I deducted taxes this week and his after tax pay was 198 per day. He gets food stamps and help for his daughter which should be cut out. His only problem is that you have to beg him to work. Besides that, he does excellent work. Do you think he will show up every day if the welfare was cut out? I doubt it because he is too used to the free money. You get no tears from me.

demeaning. It is embarrassing to what was once considered "honest labor". "Will work for food" has always been the undisplayed sign applied to responsible individuals. We have created, our government with our help and money, an Entitlement Monster.

Maybe there are those like myself who were unemployed on numerous occasions due to health problems. I was wounded 5 times in combat in Vietnam, which left my body in unemployable shape. It took years of trying to get healthy enough to be physically fit to go to work. When I did finally get hired in my law enforcement job, I suffered 4 serious injuries. The last one cost me my job and landed me on a 100% total disability. It took 5 long years of fighting the system before the VA accepted responsibility for my service connected wounds. At the time of my injuries, I lost the contents of my house first, trying to stay one step ahead of the bill collectors, then my house and car. Being a young white guy at the time no one wanted to give me anything. I kept trying to work only to be stopped because of a severe back injury. I lost job after job but I tried until I became totally disabled. The poor that you are so protective of differ from people like me who at least tried to pull themselves up by the bootstraps. Maybe you should read what I wrote again instead of shaking your head. People should earn their way in life if they can, then they won't be beholding to anyone.

JRC2024 One of the problems

JRC2024 One of the problems is you and other people don't pay a living wage. I'm not saying it's your fault you pay what the market rate allows but when we lost the manufacturing jobs which created a big percentage of middle class that spent a lot of money in our economy. The WTO and other trade agreements and Communist China these are all reasons we have so many people out of work and why are tax revenues are so low. We need to stand up for America and it's workers and stop blaming the people of America. We could get a lot of people off welfare if we could end these practices. One more thing, Let's start giving people money for taking these jobs that don't pay a living wage. Instead of taking all their welfare away for taking a 8 dollar an hour job we should give them money to help get them make money closer to a living wage. We now as soon as they get a job that makes a 15,000 a year we take everything away. Why would any smart person want to work. Lets give them additional money for working which will actually be enough to live on.This would help small business get and keep employees and help pump money into the economy and get welfare people working.Everyone deserves a living wage.

Basic Problem

Just reviewing the comments here shows how deeply intrenched the sense of entitlement has become. The fact that so many people have the gall to whine about having to work for their support shows how far we have sunk...

really noway, you are 100%

really noway, you are 100% wrong. The people that work for me get paid on a production basis. The more they do the more thay make. The bigger the check I write them the better because they produced more. What is a living wage to you and how much fairer could pay based on your production be? That is how I am paid, the more I produce the more I make. That is why I work at least 80 hours per week.
