'Genius' ruling? Not so fast

  • Follow Letters

I read Bob Waters’ featured letter (“Roberts’ ruling was genius,” July 7), and several thoughts came to mind.

If that ruling by the chief justice was genius concerning health care, Bob must have loved the ruling the court made to stop the vote count in Florida in 2000 that gave George W. Bush the White House. Now that was genius of a few justices putting their party into the presidency. That ruling, probably more than anything I can remember, hurt the Supreme Court and its ideal to be above politics in the eyes of the American people.

Also, I was thinking Mr. Waters would have really shuddered when President Roosevelt was the founder of Social Security, and when President Johnson founded Medicare for the senior citizens and Medicaid for our poorest. If anyone believes that Obamacare ensures Mitt Romney’s victory in November, forget it. The baggage he carries with him is plenty to give the Democrats a load of ammunition starting Labor Day. Sit back and watch – the first shot has not been fired yet.

Also, I resented the sentence that had “Obama and his brownshirts.” Just about everyone understands the brownshirt term. That speaks volumes about the writer.

What a bummer.

Isn't the idea of Obamacare such a cheerful thought!

The real genius of the ruling is that it gutted the Commerce Clause and has stopped Congress in its tracks from regulating it. He flung open to door to endless challenges to ObummerCare, while also making it abundantly clear that what Obummer and pals have done is nail us all with a bigger and worse tax increase than has ever happened before.

If that doesn't get people's attention, then it's probably too late to matter any more.

@Fiat_Lux

It didn't gut the Commerce Clause, but it did stop it from expanding even further.

Today will be the 31st

Today will be the 31st opportunity wasted by the House Republicans. When Republicans vote to repeal Obamacare for the 31st time, they will be wasting another opportunity to do the work we sent them to Washington to do. Thirty - one opportunities wasted to pass a jobs bill to put people back to work, but the right - wing news media and Gov. Mitt Romney want to portray President Obama for the nation's economy turmoil. Thirty - one opportunties wasted to side with their constituents, not the insurance companies. Thirty - one opportunities wasted to help rebuild the middle class in this country.

Poor memories can't rewrite

Poor memories can't rewrite the history of the last election cycle which was in direct opposition to the original passage of Obamacare and an out of control spend happy Congress. The House of Representatives can't do it alone. Conservatives need to win an effective majority in the Senate and regain the office of the President to get change we can truly live and prosper with as a nation.

The writer clearly doesn’t

The writer clearly doesn’t understand Bush vs. Gore and yet he wants us to think he understands the health care ruling? The Supreme Court Justices in Bush vs. Gore ruled that Florida could not cherry pick the recount, the Florida Supreme Court had to interpreted the Florida election law incorrectly and yes the election law could not be ignored and had to be followed . The Florida Democratic officials actually stopped the count because they had ran through the heavy populated Democratic precincts and were getting into heavy Republican precincts and did not have enough Gore votes to swing the county to Gore. Roberts has said the commerce clause has limits and can’t be used to force states to shoulder the burden of the poor for health insurance through state run Medicaid programs. This now means the Federal Government, for those states that opt out, have to set up insurance exchanges and shoulder the funding for people that can’t pay for Health insurance. OH, by the way, Bush won every recount done.

That scam!

Republicans, including Willard, have a death-wish for their party! Their bait and switch will face defeat on election say!
No Democrat bemoans responsible wealth-creation. Yet how can the Bain experience be responsible when companies it runs go bankrupt, taking pensions away? Do the owners recompense those pensioners? No.
Ti's not class warfare but justice and fairness that we demand. The upward redistribution of wealth harms the middle-class by forcing them to enjoy less their rightful entitlements, what they work so hard to have!
Downward redistribution is quite moral as the market is not in the business of rightful original distribution of wealthy.
Pres. Obama already has worked to reduce taxes for the middle-class, working to give it even more with the Bush extension. Tax cuts for the middle-class means that they are the job-enablers as they're more than the rich responsible for demand-side economics, the real thing like Coca Cola! Business has around two trillion dollars in its coffers that it cannot use for job creation until the enablers can spend more- that stimulus. So, tax cuts the rich receive don't go for job creation but instead just investments that produce no new jobs.
Willard's platitudes thus reflect wishful thinking! What a scam!
Liberal capitalism is the known moral ideal that strips away that road to serfdom of laissez-faire capitalism.

" Thirty - one opportunities wasted to pass a jobs "

The Republican controlled House has passed more than 30 jobs bills but the Democrat controlled Senate refuses to bring them up for a vote because they are afraid they will pass. The Republicans have NOT missed an opportunity to pass a job bill........it's the Democrats who will not vote on jobs bills and who gave us Obamacare instead of a jobs bill.

"Thirty - one opportunties wasted to side with their constituents"

Excuse me.........they seem to be siding with the MAJORITY of the people who seem to want Obamacare REPEALED and replaced with something that is not a socialized government takeover of health care. "It's not a tax"......LIE "You can keep your doctor".......LIE "You can keep your insurance plan".......LIE "The cost of health care will go down".......LIE "I will not raise taxes on anyone making less than $250K"......BIG BALD FACED LIE "No death panels"......LIE - a rose by any other name is still a rose and there are panels that will review your treatment to determine if you are worth keeping around. If you are old, overweight, been a smoker or drinker, or a registered Republican you are probably going to be found uneconomically repairable.

And all the Democrats can come up with is to trash Romney because he is wealthy and has made some good investment decisions. The answer to that is:

The Democrats want me to be more upset about what Romney does with HIS money than I am about what Obama and the Democrats are doing with MY money.

overstepped

car; any attorney worth his salt will tell you that the Supreme Court overstepped in its ruling on BushVGore. It was a 'states rights' issue the Feds had no business with, they just got 'scared' about the confusion it was causing. and you are right, had the process been allowed to come to and end, Bush would still have won.

While I agree that its a waste of time and effort for the Republicans to keep sending these bills to kill Obamacare, like most liberals, you conveniently ignore the fact that House Republicans have passed NUMEROUS jobsbills, only to see them d.o.a. when they arrive at the Democrat controlled senate. Also, why is it you don't mention that Obama has called the Bush era tax cuts evil, only to now say he wants to extend some of them? Pretty obvious Obama will do ANYTHING to get another 4 years, despite what he claims his convictions are. And his robot followers STILL think he walks on water. Absolutely laughable.

my point is that many justify the means to an end they can justify in their minds because the outcome is to their liking, without being critical of the means used to accomplish that end. Many tout states rights as a primo argument against big government, but allow this overreach to go un criticized. I am sorry, but like I said, any legal scholar or lawyer who saw this decision by the court as justified, has an AGENDA, and is partisan in his/her objectiveness.

proof of the pudding is in the eating.... reasoned scholars found the ruling overboard, that was enough for me. I also did recognize the non objectiveness of the many who sided with the court. I know what I know, just stating what I know... others may 'know' different, so be it !

the 'preponderance' of legal scholars found the ruling intruding on 'states rights'. One can always find those on 'the other side', always... kinda like the AC here, no matter they will find and fight for their 'cause', no matter.

Well...one could certianly prove there was a preponderance of legal scholors if in fact there was, since that is not just a "belief" is was a statement of fact. So I guess the answer to my 2:54 question is "No."

i saw today differently than some. To me it was another day Obama wasted on a re-election tour when he should have been tending to business, i.e. the economy, jobs...
The entire Congress was not working on Obamacare repeal...most cast their vote and went back to tending to the people's business.
