More taxes? Outrageous

  • Follow Letters

I hope all my friends who also are retired teachers have noticed the increase in our health insurance over the past year.

Guess what: With Obamacare, our insurance is considered a “Cadillac plan.” I hope they understand that we will get taxed extra on our health insurance because of this!

You all must be proud now that you voted for President Obama! You better consider this before November!

We have all paid for this insurance over our careers, and the state of Georgia and our Teachers Retirement System have done a great job of keeping us solvent.

Don’t let Obama and the Democrats destroy what we all have worked for and earned!

i hope my insurance plan

i hope my insurance plan isn't considered a "cadillac plan" i have to spend $500+ dollars just to have anything covered. co-pays, prescription doctors visits, whatever. it doesn't include dental, vision. takes 1/4 of my monthly paycheck too. eugh. Gobama's plan probably wasn't the best answer to the healthcare problem, but left to their own devices private health insurance companies are already bleeding Americans dry. blame it on lawyers, corporations, indigent care, irresponsible people, greed. Its a multifacted problem and its going to take more than hurried legislation that admittedly wasn't read by a great number of congresspeople.

Marion, my friend, Obamacare

Marion, my friend, Obamacare doesn't even kick in until 2014. Your health insurance is rising because the cost of medical care is rising along the same trend lines as the past many years. Cadillac plans start getting their high taxes in 2018. Starting in 2014 you might blame Obama, but, for now, this accusation is off base. Time to turn off Fox News.

Insurance companies are

Insurance companies are ripoffs; and always will be...it's legal robbery; I know back in the 80's not all states required auto insurance (but, you were required to post a property bond with the state). I had a real good friend in the military at Fort Gordon, who when he retired decided to go back to his home state of Texas (at the time did not require insurance, now they do) In Augusta, his coverage from Allstate was costing him right at $1100 every 6 months..........when he got his vehicle back in Texas and registered......the same coverage, with the same company was now $183 every 6 months.......the difference at the time was Georgia says you got to have it, Texas says you don't......I think Ohio is the only state left where if you post a bond with the state, you can get around the insurance issue. This works great for companies who have several vehicles to insurance. That is why you see some companies vehicles registered in Ohio instead of their "real" home states. That is also why you can go to Columbia County and see cars in driveways that if you go by their license plate are from Washington, Ga. Business people go to Washington and buy a piece of land where the taxes are dirt cheap; and live in Columbia County. Sidestepping the added tax revenue that they are robbing the county of.........just sayin' if you think like a crook, you must be a crook................

Rhetor-Nice try but your health insurance premiums increased because of the dependents being able to be on their parent’s health insurance until 26 years old and no preexisting illness exemption. Both those went in effect shortly after the bill was passed. In order to cover those increased costs health insurance premiums went up....There is no free lunch even if Obama thinks he can make one...

' Taxing so-called "Cadillac

' Taxing so-called "Cadillac plans" is another way of taxing the middle class. It's true that the bulk of this plan goes into effect in 2014, but you know what..that is only a year and a half away...

The truth is that there are many hidden taxes in the plan but by the time we see what is happening it will be too late. Obama will either no longer be around or will be running his final lap, and we the people will be left to bear the brunt of this mess he set in motion.

That's weird.. my health insurance has only gone up since I've started getting it back in my 20's.. Just like auto insurance, homeowners insurance, life insurance, and everything else you have to pay for. It's part of a capitalist society. Corporations want more and more and more. Why do you think these super political action committees exist? To buy out politicians so they can keep getting what THEY want- pretty bad that corporations have more rights than everyday individuals in this country.

Taxes

A few months ago many conservatives were blaming the rising price of gasoline on the President. Some said that he was deliberately allowing the price to rise. Well, prices went down and not one of those people gave him credit for the falling price of gasoline. (They are now creeping up again; I can’t wait to hear what is said about that.)

Think, people, think! The congressmen that are convincing you that ACA is going to ruin this country are the folks who have the best health care YOUR taxes can buy. I have a problem with people who had a chance to fix the health care system when in power the last six of the past seven administrations but now all of a sudden they have a solution. It’s like a spouse that is being divorced and all of a sudden they know what to do to make the marriage work. The Republicans have had many opportunities to address health care in a comprehensive way and it just has not been a priority.

Many of these congressmen have been masterful in turning the middle class against one another. They have convinced many that only freeloaders will benefit from this law. This law is designed to make those who can pay, do so, so the rest of us don’t have to carry their weight any longer.
As one who is predisposed to a particular cancer due to family history, not lifestyle, I would be in big trouble if I were at the mercy of pre-existing condition clauses. Having worked in the insurance industry, I know how important this feature is. Whether there is a health care law or not, insurance companies will do just fine and with marketing strategies will always find new ways to sell their products. I have received many offers for employment by different companies, so you see there are jobs out there!

Of course this tax won’t hurt anyone unless you are in the implant industry! Here is an excerpt from this article. http://www.nj.com/njvoices/index.ssf/2012/07/us_tax_on_medical_devices_a... “Medical device firms aren’t waiting for the tax to kick in to prepare for its impact. They’re already cutting jobs, at least in part, because of the tax. Michigan-based Stryker Corp. recently laid off 1,000 employees. Cook Medical, America’s biggest family-owned device manufacturer, canceled plans to build one new factory in the United States every year. And in Indiana, Zimmer is trimming its workforce by 450 people”

carcraft's 8:07 am post and the 3.8% tax

For you people who don't understand the "3.8% sales tax" find explanations and examples in http://www.factcheck.org/2012/04/realtors-the-3-8-sales-tax-and-247-medi...

You will be able to understand that it will only apply to a very few taxpayers after the income thresholds and deductions allowed are applied.

Qustion asked again!

I've asked this question before with no answer..
If healthcare is a finite resource dictated by how many people provide the service, and fewer people are entering that field, how does adding millions more to that system without increasing those providing the service, make it cheaper, or more efficient?
I"m asking....why does the law of supply and demand not apply here?

Carcraft, you're shifting ground and making a different point. Marion's letter was about the Cadillac tax, which takes hold in 2018. It is not responsible for the current increases. Now, yes, I'm sure that covering more dependents costs some more money, but that wasn't the LTE's point.

From the AP:The Supreme

From the AP:The Supreme Court's decision to uphold most of President Barack Obama's health care law will come home to roost for most taxpayers in about 2 1/2 years, when they'll have to start providing proof on their tax returns that they have health insurance.

What will happen to the income tax ctedit, thousands of dollars, that single parents are now receving as a gift from taxpayers

We had better make hay while the sun shines. The shadows are lurking. Here's hoping Romany is elected and that HE has some ideas that will fix this before it's too late.

Rhetor...NOT TRUE "Starting in 2014 you might blame Obama"

These folks can rightfully blame Obama for the current increases because of the "things they like" provisions that are already effective like pre-existing conditions, no cancellations, and baby brother and sister 26 year olds still on mama and daddy's policy. But these folks have not even seen a dent in the 2014 and out taxes to come that are built into Obamacare. And another $7600 tax on the average house.....I'm sure nobody will even notice that. What the CROCK does that have to do with healthcare????? Does anybody else see why Obamacare is SO WRONG in SO MANY WAYS. And guess what? Even with all the taxes already built into this abortion of a healthcare bill brought to you in the middle of the night in a dark back room by Obama and the Democrats, IT ISN'T EVEN HALFWAY PAID FOR. There are MORE HUGE TAXES and MORE HUGE DEFICITS to come shortly after 2014.

Very few home sellers will be affected with that 3.8% tax

This tax applies to high income earners. Here are some examples.

(btw The link I posted at 11:24 is very helpful wrt understanding.)

Okay, John and Mary are earning $1M a year. They sell their home bought in 1970 for $50K for $550,000, which results in a $500,000 profit. Let's see that 3.8% comes into play because they make over $500K per year. Now they have to pay tax on their profit, but the $500K deductible for a married couple leaves a "0" amount, hence they pay noone.

Tom and Kim don't eat quite that high on the hog and they both file jointly an annual income of $240,000, which isn't too bad for a middle aged Georgia couple. The house they bought in 1985 at $75000 goes on the market and is sold for $320000. A Fox News fan and a friend of Tom and Kim tells them they will have to pay .038*245000=$9310! Wrong, they pay nothing because their combined income is below the$250,000 threshold.

Let's say John and Mary sold their home for $750000 giving them a $700000 profit. The taxable amount is $700000 (profit) - $500000 (deductible) or $200000. So they will pay .038*$200000= $7600.
