Are you a lion or a jackal?

  • Follow Letters

Novelist Wilbur Smith’s first book was titled When The Lion Feeds. Reading the wild adventures of Sean Courtney, his protagonist in this great book, one can easily overlook the premise contained in the title, but raised in South Africa as he was, Smith was well aware of the natural law that when the lion feeds, every other creature eats as well. The hyena, the jackal, the stork, the vulture and even prey animals feed peacefully after the lion’s hunger is satisfied.

This basic law of nature holds true for all life on this earth. As a civilized creature, man has twisted and reshaped this law in many ways, but the basic premise remains true: In an economy, when the lions of business, trade, finance and real estate prosper, we all prosper.

Unfortunately we now have a president who is no admirer of lions. His sympathies lies more with the jackals. Virtually every policy he espouses is designed to starve the lions and feed the jackals.

What has made America great for more than 200 years is that, in America, everyone has the opportunity to grow into a lion, with hard work, courage and determination. Americans have long been known for their independent spirits, work ethic and determination to find better lives for their children. They have aspired to become lions, and many have succeeded.

Unfortunately, over the past couple of decades, many Americans have lost the heart of the lion, and have become content to behave as jackals, living off the efforts of others.

Despite its ever-growing size, the government is no lion. It is more like the hyena, feeding an ever-growing number of bureaucrats from the wealth seized from the lions that drive our economy. Saddled as they are with ever-growing mountains of debt, our children certainly will have to become lions to survive under the burden of government taxation and mindless regulations.

In November, you will have a clear choice: Are you a lion or a jackal? Remember the immutable law of nature: When the lion feeds ...

Turn out the jackals and find lions to replace them.

The Nanny State,by making life better for the many, is itself the lion of America! People, instead of being innervated, as reactionaries ever prattle, using the benefits develop from their own internal resources- often misjudged as from faith- means of getting ahead. Pres. Clinton's the New Covenant helps that with Workfare- people have to work when getting welfare. That is the covenant betwixt the recipient and the taxpayer, whose roles are sometimes reversed. It follows [Google:] the covenant for morality- the presumption of humanism.
Bigotry about the poor reflects ignorance: the poor too are hard workers whose pay doesn't reflect their contributions as the free market is distorted, and government must readjust matters with the minimum wage that should become the living wage!
The middle-class benefits from its entitlements- a lion share of the budget- Social Security, Medicare, the GI Bill and other matters. These are more efficient measures for the many than charity!
By the way, demographics in our context means that we use the States, not the federal system, in comparison with Scandinavia: each state can address its version of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and each state responds to Medicaid as it deems best. So, we reject that red herring!
Again, with their vacations and more, Scandinavians, despite being highly taxed, have more real disposable income; their governments spend for them more wisely than they could otherwise. So much for the shibboleth of spending your own money!
Reactionary bromides ill serve all Americans! Yes, we can and yes. we will continue to do better when Obama-Biden have their second term!
Love America or learn to love it!
Again, Morgan-LynnG. is a man!

Perfect!

This is a perfect analogy for our situation. Thank you, Mr. Edwards. Though we are a republic & not a democracy, Churchill summed our situation up pretty succinctly, with his opinion: "The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter."
Our first mixed race president is an abject failure, not because of his race(s), but because of his policies and goals. His pompous opinion of his superior intelligence and knowledge, makes his leadership ability nil.

Agree with Mr. Edwards and Mr. Brown.

Hopefully after this incredible disaster of a President is defeated in November, and businessmen feel a bit more confident about the direction of the country the ,Obama sycophants might begin to realize his type of government does not work.....Not holding my breath though.....

You poor things! You'll get over his being re-elected. Why you could use your imaginations to find other lies about him! Yes, blast and weep!

Great metaphor to make your

Great metaphor to make your point! But even worms gotta eat-it is part of nature. We just need to realize how the food chain works in his analogy. All are dependent on one another-after WWII Americans realized no matter their position they all worked together in the great economic machine of America. Now Obama is trying to divide Americans by socioeconomic status (what a discriminatory pig!) for purely political reasons-the idea is we can all be a lion. But in ameria we find some are actually discriminated "for" in their efforts (especially blacks but too bad for asians who are still generally discriminated against in America-America still discriminate but now it is Arabs and Asians). Sad how ignorance begats all this racism. If you adopt the premise-there are no biological races, then life becomes clear we all but one race-the human race. Simple-idiot proof and immediately discounts and neutralizes all the differences researchers have described in relation to race and intelligence. The research clearly describes (without bias and on studied on all continents) that intelligence falls lowest to highest-african, hispanic, caucasians, asians. Of course, since there are no races these comparisons are meaningless-there are no differences in genes related to intelligence either. It is important to frame issues properly.
