Drivers can scan to stay safe

  • Follow Letters

The problem with Mike Padgett Highway is driver training. The secret is to scan traffic, not look for traffic.

Hunters know they need to scan. Pilots know they constantly need to scan, not only for enemies in combat but also incoming aircraft in civilian life. Snipers in the military are taught to scan. The reason is that the mind does not process images visually between the focus point and the eye. It is not unlike selective hearing in a crowd.

As marvelous as the body is, it can work against a person. Drivers need to scan.

Good Point

Drivers should be trained to look far down the road to anticipate traffic patterns - not to just look a few car lengths ahead. That's the problem. Add tail-gating to this mix, and it's a disaster waiting to happen.

distraction

I believe defensive driving requires as close to 100% attention to the task as possible.
