Save old Television Park

I was disheartened to hear that the old WJBF (Channel 6) Television Park was to be demolished. What a shame that this very unusual 1950s building will be just a memory soon.

Growing up in Augusta in the ’50s and ’60s, Television Park represented the optimism of the times, and for me was a bit of Hollywood on Reynolds Street. The unusual colorful structure looks like similar mid-century style buildings in Miami Beach and Southern California. I’m not sure which big stars visited Channel 6, but John Radeck, Terry Sams, and Georgia Cunningham with the Top 10 Dance Party had star quality to me.

This one-of-a-kind building, built just for television by former Augustan and financier J.B. Fuqua, is now being leveled so the property will have some other use – and hopefully not just another parking lot.

Maybe this could be a great structure for the Savannah College of Art and Design to open an Augusta campus. I sure wish we could find a way to save old Television Park and determine another use for it.
