Life before Medicare? Yes!

  • Follow Letters

Letter writer Brad Link asked if we “Recall life before Medicare” (April 17). I do remember – and life was good.

A hospital stay was $30 a night, and it included meals, aspirin and water. A doctor’s visit was $10 and a shot was $5. A tonsillectomy was $100, which included hospital charges, surgeon’s fees and the ice cream they gave you to eat because your throat was too sore for much else.

Communities took pride in having competent hospitals, and citizens donated time and effort to achieve it. After Medicare, there was no need to donate anything because it became a money-making enterprise with skyrocketing costs.

The deductibles for Medicare too often are more than the treatment would have cost prior to the government intrusion into something they have no business dabbling in. It is all part of the liberal agenda in which the moochers want everything such as health care, medicines and long-term care but want somebody else to pay for it. Well, the people who will have to pay for it are those who are working and paying heavy taxes who may need health care themselves when they get old and there will be nothing for them, because the moochers ran the well dry.

If Medicare is so wonderful, wait until Obamacare goes into effect. Under Obamacare, the illegals get health care the same as those who actually paid some taxes. After age 76, one is not eligible for cancer treatment; therefore, many elderly who do not choose to die will have no choice. But not to worry – the government will require end-of-life counseling so you will not mind dying.

Another thing is that the government will have access to individuals’ bank accounts, and will be able to make electronic funds transfers from your account whether you like it or not.

The solution is to cut needless and wasteful government programs and other costs, including million-dollar parties for the General Services Administration. Those of us who remember life before Medicare would like to have our country back.

Allen Johnson

Gas was 29 cents a gallon and they ran out and cleaned your windshield, checked your oil, and the air in your tires. Sometimes you even got a free glass or piece of silverware too. Bread was 21 cents, a postage stamp was 5 cents, you could just pull the tubes out of your tv and take them down to the store and test them and replace the bad one. Dang medicare.

Well even Obama doesn't know

Well even Obama doesn't know what's in Obama care and the Dumbocrats had to go back and remove the class or was glass portion of the bill because it was note even close to being sustainable, I guess you had to pass it to know what's in it. The truth of the matter is that it changes other laws and you then need to go research those laws etc. etc...Oh by the way Techyfan, whose lies are more egregious the President's or a someone printing a chain letter.."I will post each bill 5 days before I sign it into law" When was Obama care posted? " You can keep your health insurance if you like it" No I can't because Obama care changed the rules and cut benefits raised premiums to cover added patrons and pre existing conditions. "This law will bend the curse of health care costs” Every time we turn around it is costing more. It has gone from $900 billion to $1.6 trillion or there about and that doesn't even consider the double counted $500 billion cut from Medicare So let’s hold. Obumbler to the same standard you hold Allen Johnson OK?

Techfan-I was also talking

Techfan-I was also talking about Obama care when I mentioned Obama's lies, just as the letter writer may have some factual inaccuracies, Obama trying to sell Obama care used inaccuracies. Included in the inaccuracies is the fact that Obama’s mother had excellent health care that paid her bills exactly as the health insurance company should have. Obama’s mother fought with a company that she bought a disability plan from without disclosing the fact that she had cancer! http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/obamas-mother-had-health-insuranc... So what is the worse lie? Someone repeating an on line letter or the President of the United States, Barack Obama , lying about his mother’s insurance circumstances to sell a program to the American people that takes over a large sector of the American economy by the federal government?

I apologize, if I offended

I apologize, if I offended anyone with my previous post. The quote cited, I believe, was from "Poor Richard's Almanack," and since at least one reader took issue, I must replace the "offensive" word with the more generic term, "man." Again, I apologize for the word. The sentiment remains.

The Wikipedia article is

The Wikipedia article is pretty good about Obamacare. What you quickly pick up on is that all the savings during the initial period died with the CLASS act. The CBO has gone from savings to deficits. The cost of health care will have to go up because no longer denying pre-existing conditions and now all people will pay the same for benefits by law which will place all the poor health individuals on the backs of the healthy. All the individuals who practice poor health choices will pay the same as those who practices excellent habits. There are a lot of fat americans that I don't on my back. If you are educated, healthy and wealthy you are screwed. If you are uneducted, unhealthy, and poor you are heaven. I think the basic problem with Obamacare is how they did it-like a fundamentalist christian cramming their religion down your throat-the Dems looke like Fascist and looked ignorant passing a law they haven't read-my lord how could Pelosi keep a straight face and say something so inane, inept, a few more in... s. Yes this is common, I often go to my lawyers office and sign documents that I'll read and figure out what is in them later-jeez.

The choice seems to be

The choice seems to be poverty forever at the hands of government or...
a chance for a better life by being self-reliant.
Obama is still playing games with the poor, and will rake in their votes.

The "Julia" slide show by liberals, tells us all we need to know concerning the reality of a power grabbing Obama.

Obamacare is just more of his

Obamacare is just more of his ideology of "fairness" and wealth redistribution. If you make poor financial or health choices the govt will bail you out at the expense of those who make good financial and health choices. See that's not FAIR. If you make poor financial and health care choices you reap what you sow. Why should people who did it right be punished because of the poor choices of others, and why should people who did everything wrong be rewarded for such stupidity.

It's disturbing that there

It's disturbing that there seems to be only two options here. Accept Obamacare and pay out the ying-yang in medical insurance or say to heck with individuals how are truly poor and needy, not by their own bad choices in life but because they are truly in need. We will always have the poor and sick among us but it seems we are lumping everyone in the same category. How do we take care of those who are in need without catering to those who are lazy.

It is reassuring to be told

It is reassuring to be told that in the past 45 years, the only changed variable in the entire healthcare industry is Medicare. I am such an idiot to have thought that it was more complicated than that.

By most measures, including

By most measures, including infant mortality and life span, the U.S. medical system has not shown improved effectiveness, recently, even as costs have skyrocketed. Of course, over the longer trend, particularly back in history, the value of medical care was obvious.

Concerning the bill, government can pay for it all only if it has the revenues to do so; while liberals decry a conservative agenda they say is out to prevent universal health care, they remain mute on questions of payment. Of course, in an era of free money and ez credit, many believe capital is unlimited and ought to be spent freely. If that were so, there'd be no need for debate.

A lot of America's problem is

A lot of America's problem is we are morbidly obese as a population and with that alone your risks for cardiovascular disease and stroke, diabetes, cancer, and Alzheirmer's immediately go up. We eat too much red meat, work too much-too much stress, get too little exercise, and list of other complicating factors. Other countries like Japan have a growing population living to 100 but examine their diet and lifestyle. Most aging studies indicate being thin and fasting, modest consumption of wine, low stress, modest exercise are keys to long life-dont' smoke get flu vaccinations, etc. It ain't rocket science.

Say we have a universal

Say we have a universal health care system, now all will pay the same and likely the wealthy will pay a little more (I think Austrailia has a 1-2% tax and then wealthy pay a little more). Now we have all America's health problems in one big pool. We will never be able to afford it. The government would have to intervene control and change American's habits for the good of all American's . Hey maybe it would be good. Some good ole Social Darwinism. The population would regulate itself. You work with some fat lazy slob, well you and other employees can gang up on em and force them to run laps and quit eating. Some one smoke-jump em. Behavior Modification will become common place. Obesity should disappear within a few years.Every American will feel it is their right as a part of the collective to keep the population healthy by behavior modification with slackards. Gangs of youths should evolve which will take out old folks and genetic rejects that will increase costs and law enforcement will turn a blind eye.
