Corruption is ridiculous

  • Follow Letters

I sent the U.S. government my “fair share” to the IRS. Then I came home and listened to the news to discover how the General Services Administration has spent our fair share at a lavish conference to the tune of almost $1 million.

At virtually every turn, the Obama administration engages in waste and corruption.

A GSA administrator, in a congressional hearing, invoked the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution to avoid testifying about suspected wrongdoing.

The administrator has been suspended with pay for now, and because he is a career civil servant under union protection, he will be assigned to another job, and retire with my fair share. That will be his sentence for allegedly committing a felony.

Every administration usually refers to the previous administration to justify waste and corruption. They say Richard Nixon was a crook? He was a saint compared to people in this administration.

Now it is the Secret Service involved in a prostitution scandal in Colombia. I’ll bet the pillow talk was revealing. Do you think that information was offered up to the girls that could compromise the safety of U.S. citizens? Colombia, wait let me think – hasn’t this country been involved in the drug trade somehow? Did we check the baggage compartment of the plane on which the agents flew home?

It is time for the American people to take back their fair share and say loud and clear in November: We are not going to take it anymore!

Mike Booth wrote, "They say Richard Nixon was a crook? He was a saint compared to people in this administration."

Well, there was this little incident called Watergate, which led to the indictment and imprisonment of several of Nixon's administrative officials, as well as the resignation of President Nixon, and a pardon for his crimes by Gerald Ford.

Just to quote from Nixon's Articles of Impeachment (this is only article 2, and there are four more):

1. He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, endeavoured to obtain from the Internal Revenue Service, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, confidential information contained in income tax returns for purposed not authorized by law, and to cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigations to be intitiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner.

2. He misued the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service, and other executive personnel, in violation or disregard of the constitutional rights of citizens, by directing or authorizing such agencies or personnel to conduct or continue electronic surveillance or other investigations for purposes unrelated to national security, the enforcement of laws, or any other lawful function of his office; he did direct, authorize, or permit the use of information obtained thereby for purposes unrelated to national security, the enforcement of laws, or any other lawful function of his office; and he did direct the concealment of certain records made by the Federal Bureau of Investigation of electronic surveillance.

3. He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, in violation or disregard of the constitutional rights of citizens, authorized and permitted to be maintained a secret investigative unit within the office of the President, financed in part with money derived from campaign contributions, which unlawfully utilized the resources of the Central Intelligence Agency, engaged in covert and unlawful activities, and attempted to prejudice the constitutional right of an accused to a fair trial.

4. He has failed to take care that the laws were faithfully executed by failing to act when he knew or had reason to know that his close subordinates endeavoured to impede and frustrate lawful inquiries by duly constituted executive, judicial and legislative entities concerning the unlawful entry into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, and the cover-up thereof, and concerning other unlawful activities including those relating to the confirmation of Richard Kleindienst as Attorney General of the United States, the electronic surveillance of private citizens, the break-in into the offices of Dr. Lewis Fielding, and the campaign financing practices of the Committee to Re-elect the President.

5. In disregard of the rule of law, he knowingly misused the executive power by interfering with agencies of the executive branch, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Criminal Division, and the Office of Watergate Special Prosecution Force, of the Department of Justice, and the Central Intelligence Agency, in violation of his duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed.

Most US citizens would not consider Richard M. Nixon to be a saint, but a treasonous crook of the highest caliber.

Mike, as a management

Mike, as a management official, the GSA administrator would be exempt from union representation under the Federal Managemnt Labor Relations Statute.

So Specsta doesn't deny the

So Specsta doesn't deny the current admin. is corrupt, but just points out that this is no different from the past. (which, by the way, is not a defense, but an avoidance of the facts)

Well, if I recall the Watergate perpetrators were jailed, and Nixon resigned.

When can we expect the same from Obama and his friends?

I sometimes listen to Austin,

I sometimes listen to Austin, and he makes a good point:

Politics are corrupt across the board -- both Libs. and Conservs. However, there is a difference: If a Conserv. is caught in corrpution, his career is usually over. If a Lib. is caught, he/she tends to receive a pass and is often re-elected by his/her constitutents (e.g., Rangle, McKinney, and even Clinton to some extent).

I agree with Spectsa that the Obama Admin. is fraught with corrpution, but I do not expect anything happen. The Dems. will nominate him again, and he may very well be re-elected. Such is the sad state of corrpution in American politics.

My shock and outrage is not

My shock and outrage is not when it happens, but rather when the corrupt parties are re-elected. You get what you pay for. If we continue to elect bad people, we will continue to get bad results. Oftentimes, our biggest problem is what we see in the mirror.

Stunning example was, I believe, the mayor of D.C. What was the name, Marion Berry? If I recall, he was caught red-handed with drugs and all manner of corruption. But after he served time, wasn't he re-elected? Unbelievable!

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice....

Techfan and specta: Richard

Techfan and specta: Richard Nixon brought down a presidency and his cohorts. Obama, "the obamanation" is bringing down an entire country. It'll take some time before the scope of corruption in the present adminstration is exposed thanks to the efforts of the adoring mainstream media and news organizations who're so smitten with this pied piper dictator in the making they fall all over themselves.

At some point the sewers in Washington will overflow.

I agree with letter writer.

The point is that President

The point is that President Obama cannot be compared to a crook like Richard Nixon.

President Obama has respectfully upheld the Office of the President as he was sworn to do and this country is a much better place because we have a man of character and intellect in the White House.

Compare this with the previous Administrations of George W Bush (torture, illegal wars, the PATRIOT Act) and Ronald Reagan (Iran-Contra scandal, trickle-down economics, saving and loans crisis, the misguided War on Drugs and the resultant exploding prison population) and one can only determine that President Obama has set the precedent as one of our strongest leaders.

The best that the conservatives can throw at Obama is an over-budget fundraiser via the GSA and some Secret Service tryst - both of which did not involve the President. I would think that illegal wars, torture, selling arms illegally to rogue nations, and initiating measures that erode our Constitutional protections by folks such as Bush and Reagan are indicative of the conservative mindset.

What has President Obama tried to do? Give access to healthcare for every citizen, make the rich pay their fair share of taxes and end the wars. Sounds like a pretty upright guy to me...

Raul. You are wasting your time trying to tell the CONS anything factually true. They hate labor unions and are waiting daily for advice from the great one (fat boy) to tell them what to regurgitate as fact. What I find totally hilarious is the suggestion that the Secret Service was apparently totally revamped and staffed with new people on the day President Obama was sworn in, otherwise how could the CONS lay this fiasco at his door step.
