It is with regret that I read of the retirement of Pat Summitt, the coach for the University of Tennessee’s women’s basketball team. She was more than fitting to lead the team to victory.
Her teams were fortunate to have her for many reasons. Of course, her teams’ athletic successes are commendable. However, more commendable are the qualities that made her a winning coach.
Enthusiasm for the sport; respect for her teams and their opponents; her character and integrity; her dedication to academic excellence; and her realization that her girls were there for an education makes Pat Summitt an outstanding role model. She insisted that her “ladies” maintain their studies and graduate.
Pat Summitt is the kind of person we need in American education at every level. She is truly a civilized, cultured human being, worthy of respect.
