Page treats Obama shabbily

  • Follow Letters

The Augusta Chronicle’s editorial page has sunk to a new low in pursuing its incessant campaign to demonize and discredit President Obama.

The Jan. 18 editorial cartoon plays on the recent shipwreck in the waters off the Italian coast, portraying the capsized vessel as the United States and Obama as the captain of the sinking ship and holding a sign asking to be re-elected. If this was meant to be humorous, it was anything but. I don’t think the families of the passengers and crew who died in the mishap and those who are still missing would find any humor in the cartoon.

I can’t help but wonder how vehemently you would complain if this shameful episode was perpetrated by Bill Maher or other liberals in the “mainstream media” whom you subject to criticism for making comments you consider to be crude and uncalled-for.

The members of your editorial board should look in the mirror the next time they feel the urge to scold people for what they consider reprehensible behavior.

David Lorenzatti

Hey Dave, seen the news

Hey Dave, seen the news lately? Like it or not, America IS on the rocks, and Obama IS the captain...for now. Also, its interesting you mention Bill Maher. The guy's show, "REAL TIME" should be titled "BASH CONSERVATIVES TIME" since that's all the guy does. But, getting back to Obama, don't worry. Polls show his re-election campaign is headed for the rocks. This time next year, liberals worldwide will be able to say its all a Republican president's fault...and say it with a straight face.

How quickly people forget.

How quickly people forget. If the cartoon had been honest, it would have shown a sinking ship with the Republicans holding a sign saying Vote For Us. As I recall this mess started in 2008 before Obama even got into office. We seem destined to repeat the same mistakes. Republicans ran up the debt for 8 years with unfunded wars and tax cuts...then tanked the economy by doing away with regulations. Obama's challenge has been to try and turn things around as the Republicans use every tactic to stop him from doing so. Things are slowly improving. Now we have to decide if we re-elect the person trying to fix the mess or if we elect the people who made the mess, kept Obama from passing anything to help fix it, and want to return to the same policys that brought it all about to begin with.

TIM, "Obama's challenge?"
Unpublished

TIM, "Obama's challenge?" Well, let's see how's he's met this challenge, shall we? Increasing the national deficit by over 3 trillion his first year, apologizing to the world for American "arrogance," and killing an oil pipeline that would have created jobs, even though he claims that he wants to create jobs. Even Obama has admitted we aren't better off than when he took office. These and others are reasons that polls show the American voters are wanting another "change" this November. Blame Republicans all you want. If your man hadn't run the ship onto the rocks, then set fire to it, he'd be way ahead in the polls now. Those pesky facts just keep getting in the way, don't they?

This fermenting of hate and

This fermenting of hate and loathing of the President and his party can only come to no good. Demonizing contrary ideas is as old as institutionalized religion and look where it has gotten them. Corporate Religion has marginalized itself within the majority of the younger because it has turned into 'crystalline' dogma of things unseen and developed into a members only 'social club'.

Maybe the CSRA deserves a Republican administration. The local economy would fall deeper into recession as discretionary federal spending is slashed to make up for corporate and upper-bracket tax cuts, and the ACES wouldn't have any more scapegoats to blame it on.

Bruno, the man, GWB, was

Bruno, the man, GWB, was derided for his 'fu pa's' when he spoke. Kinda like Romney. Now his policy decisions are where the rubber meets the road in recognizing him as one of, if not THE worst President in our nations history. Of course only History will tell, but all bets are on his being relegated as a 'poor and inarticulate' President who governed for the few, not the many.

by the way Bruno, us 'dupes'

by the way Bruno, us 'dupes' just have a problem with 2 Wars, A self-serving Tax Cut and a prescription drug law that went completely UNFUNDED. Policy decisions that to this day, we the people are trying to deal with. In my humble opinion, you don't have a leg to stand on when you dismiss the condition of this country in January, 2009.

tim66.......I think that you

tim66.......I think that you forget that it was the Democrats who insisted that mortgage loans be handed out like candy to people who could not afford them and it was, and still is, the Democrats who insisted on an energy policy that drove up the price of gas up to the point that people had to default on their mortgage in order to put gas in their cars to get to work. Those two things caused the crash and both were solidly on the Democrat's shoulders. Yes, the wars ran up the deficit, but the debt did not cause the crash. The crash was caused by mortgages and fuel prices. Both issues solidly the fault of the Democrats. And now Obama and the Democrats have doubled the debt, continue to have harmful energy policies, and have not taken the first step to cut spending or do anything else to save this sinking ship. In fact, it looks like Obama is intentionally running it aground......kind of like the cartoon depicted.

dich, sounds like you only listen to one side of the story. I don't know of any economists, and I read and listen, that would be as adamant as you that the Democrats are the sole source for the implosion of '08. Not saying your points are wrong, just saying there were other reasons involved too, prime being: GREED, a malady that has no political bent.

An excellent letter by Mr. Lorenzatti.

The Chronicle editorial board can only parrot the Republican dogma of "blame the Democrats". The right-wingers won't consider the fact that this country is in the mess it is in due to the shipwreck that was the Bush administration. Time to wake up.

and that's the rub Bruno, the present state of the economy. It is tough right now, being self employed I can attest to the loss of 'demand' most of us guys and gals who create our own income are going through. Your and others incessant deriding of the economy only points to your political partisanship not the actuality of 'facts' on the ground. I read and listen, it is rough right now, but not as bad as your imagination would have it.

Stating the actual facts such as the unemployment rate etc. isn't "deriding" but merely pointing to actual facts. I am not saying that it is any worse than what the numbers and facts say it is. I am also not saying that it is any better.

I'll give you that one on the Medicare D. Any conservative with a conscience is still POd about that one. To say it is an abomination is an understatement. That was pandering to senior citizens, pure and simple. Millionaires were entitled to free prescriptions. RIDICULOUS!

You have got to love

You have got to love liberals, they are never quite sure which side of the mouth to speak out of! Just a month or so ago Obama and the Democrats were fighting to EXTEND portions of the Bush tax cuts. The Bush tax cuts INCREASED federal Revenue so they were "PAID " for http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/feb/3/bush-tax-cuts-boosted-fed... . You can't both bad mouth the Bush tax cuts then fight to extend them. Oh well why bother trying to understand..LOL
