James ideal as fire chief

  • Follow Letters

City Administrator Fred Russell and Augusta’s commissioners will shortly decide among three finalists for the position of chief of the fire department. I urge Chris James’ friends and admirers to contact Mr. Russell and each commissioner to urge Chris’ appointment to chief.

After reading the profiles of the finalists in The Augusta Chronicle, it was clear that Mr. James is the best candidate for the job. Chris should have been appointed to this position many years ago. He is eminently qualified for the position. His education, his character and temperament qualify him for consideration. His commitment to safety and to the well-being of this community makes him the ideal choice for the job.

Promoting from within can be

Promoting from within can be a wonderful thing. It promotes employees putting their best foot forward for the opportunity of advancement. Unfortunately that admirable practice is sometimes tainted through the promotion of someone who is not truly qualified for the position. I am glad to say that is not the case before us here with Chief Chris James. He is a true leader and will serve the community well. This is a perfect example of this past year's county retirement dinner theme, "It is my time!". This is Chief James' time. He is the right candidate for every reason.

Think about the money the

Think about the money the county will save by NOT having to move a family into town, or paying for a hotel and numerous other bills during an out-of-area transition. Mr. James is well respected in our community -- let's give him a shot at the job. If the decision proves fruitless, simply hire someone else.

After all the corruption and graft from the previous administration, any person who takes this job will be under intense pressure to remain alert and upfront concerning policies. At least we know that James is an honest man, so his reputation is a good place to start.
