Make Congress even larger

  • Follow Letters

The Constitution sets the maximum number of members of Congress at “one for every thirty thousand.” Assuming a population of 310 million, that sets a cap of about 10,333 members. There currently are 435 members of Congress.

Technology makes it possible to have a greater number of representatives. According to the Census there are about 230 million who are 18 or older. Of these, about 137 million are registered voters. Using 100,000 voters instead of 30,000 people would allow 1,370 members of Congress. This would be a much better representation for the citizens than the average of about 315,000 per member. Since the number of signatures to get on a ballot is a percent of the number to be represented, a smaller number will encourage participation in government.

By more than tripling the number of members, representation should be better and corrupting power is diluted.

Members of the House have reacted not by diluting their power but by expanding their staffs. More members with smaller staffs would be more responsive to us.

Chuck Tatum

North Augusta, S.C.

What is this? New math? If you increased congress to 10,333 members you would have 9898 more crooks and millionaires than you have now. The only thing that would be diluted is more of our tax dollars.

Geez, the 435 we've got now

Geez, the 435 we've got now can't even agree on a company picnic. More representatives would just mean more chaos. What we need is to take some of their power away so there is less to argue about. The first thing we need is a Balanced Budget Amendment with an automatic impeachment clause if they fail to pass a budget. Can't do their jobs then they are outta here and we will immediately hold another election and get someone that can. The problem is that they are controlling us when we should be controlling them. We don't need more of them, we just need to put some firm requirements in the job descriptions of the ones we already have. With 435 congressional representatives and 100 senators, we have not had a budget in over 900 days. Do you really think that 1470 of these prima donnas have a better chance to agree on something. I don't think so. Let's give them some rules to live by and automatic impeachment if they don't. If the fail to produce a balanced budget every year, fire all 535 and get a new crop. The problem is that we are stupid enough to hire 535 people and not require them to do anything. If you opened a business, ran it without having a budget, and hired 535 people who were not required to do anything......well just tattoo STUPID across you forehead and ease on down to the welfare line. And the welfare line is exactly where this country is standing now. We are living on Chinese welfare.

seenit.....I used to say that

seenit.....I used to say that too. But as we get more women representatives like Pelosi, Bachmann, Snowe, and Wasserman Schultz I see that they are just as crooked, just as wingnutty, just as far left/right, and just as traitorous as the men. Not saying they are not smart but apparently smart does not necessarily mean good when it comes to politics. So I have given up on my hope of more women in politics making things better. I'll take a candidate of any sex who appears to have a little common sense and the ability to balance a checkbook. That's about all the job requires. In fact, they can be dumb as a rock if they only understand a few rules......we cannot spend more than we make.....we cannot let half the country pay no taxes while the other half pay all of the taxes.....and we cannot provide total support to 20% of the population on a permanent, cradle to grave basis.

The number of congressmen is

The number of congressmen is 535. 100 in the Senate and 435 in the House.
I don't know where Mr Tatum came up with just 435 members of Congress but this seems to be a mistake made fairly often.

That's just what we need.

That's just what we need. Even more scum sucking politicians in Washington DC using insider information to get wealthy from their position and do their best to spend even more of our money.

Don't forget, for every new congressman who "says" they'll go to DC & be fiscally responsible, another district will hire one who will pledge to give out more goodies to their constituents.

Here's an example of insider knowledge. Certain Congressmen removed their money from the stock market & invested in hedge funds when they were told early in 2008 that the stock market would crash soon due to the economic disaster that was coming. They actually MADE money off the stock market crash. The rest of us peons were left to take the hit.

Don't forget that over the last 3 years, the wealth of American citizens (you and I) was down by 8%. The wealth of Congressmen was +15%. Seriously?! Where is the mainstream media outrage?! They are FAILING US.

More crooks wanting to line

More crooks wanting to line their pockets? Nope. We need to impeach or vote out the crooks in there now!.

Rick Perry said we need to make make our representatives part-timers, like the state. I can't see Congress/Senate crooks making all that money to name a bridge or post office -- let alone make all those "fact finding" trips...(Joe Biden even sent his wife to Somali to "see what they needed"). Make 'em part time legislators and pay them accordingly!!!!

Note that lobbyist make/write most of the laws anyways, probably when Congress on one of their many many vacations/breaks.

We can't afford the ones that

We can't afford the ones that we have now and I am not in favor of printing/borrowing more money to pay these additional people. A position in Congress should not be a career where a person can make such a lavish living as to be able to afford their own jets to travel cross country every other week. It should be a part-time duty where the representatives meet perhaps a few weeks out of the year rather than spending more time in DC than they do in their district.

The number of members in

The number of members in Congress has been set by Congress for practical reasons; the chamber is full. Also, although technology is a wonderful thing, it has its place. Is it not important to have people meet face to face and settle differences in person, rather than remotely through technology. Despite our love of the high tech, we still like high touch. Email is fine, but how wonderful it is to receive a letter or a card.

Because copperhead's posts are hilarious and they are sarcastically spot on - we are living in the Socialist States of America. THAT is a fact.

And, they do contain facts - like this little gem - "regulations (40,000+ under hussein)". Wow, that is alarming.

I kinda dig Copper's posts, because he/she uses sarcasm to illustrate how most of "Our Dear Leader"s minions think. What's scary is he is usually spot on about how they feel about this incredible failure of a President. Hopefully by this time next year Obama can go back to "community organizing" and leave leadership to the grown-ups.

Limited representation power

Limited representation power for many and select individuals only pushing the ideas they want. What does that sound like? It doesn't sound like a democratic republic. The behavior of Congress is absurd because there are so few of them, governing so many, and they have us where they want us: divided, broke, and uninformed. You blame whomever you like, but, as I always say, until the common man (or woman, to be PC) has a voice in Congress, things will stay the same. Two parties just will not further the causes of the common working man or woman! You can blame the left and the right for this!

bjphysics,do you have an idea as to the contents of these regulations? What did the majority of bush's regulations deal with as opposed to the subject matter of obama's regs.? I know, contents doesn't matter as long as it is fewer. Wasn't a great deal of bush's regs. have to deal with 9-11 and the wars?

Quoting Bloomberg News, BJPhysics posted:

One explanation is the snails pace that rules move forward. You have to dredge up data to support the proposed rule, put it out for public comment, respond to stakeholders comments, put out the revised rule for comment again, etc. The rules that went into place (they are regulatory and the president cannot veto them) during W’s first term were put into the pipeline by Clinton. The rules that went into place during O’s first term were put into the pipeline by W.

Is that a fair enough explanation?

How is obama

How is obama socialist/marxist? Gee, let me count the ways. This is so easy it's like giving candy to a toddler.

He took 100% control of the formerly private student loan program.

How about our loss of privacy & freedom (and dignity) - airport groping? Nude scanners?

See something, say something - pitting American citizen against American citizen. Loss of privacy, gain for big, intrusive govt.

We didn't simply make a loan to the auto industry, we OWN part of it (definition of socialism is the merger of state & private industry, which is occurring).

Don't forget about obama's foray into socializing the insurance industry through AIG - who we also own part of.

The healthcare bill. Mandating that citizens buy a private product and setting the stage for total socialized medicine.

Look at his staff choices? Tax cheat Tim Geitner, Communist Van Jones, Capitalism hating manufacturing czar Ron Bloom who said that govt power "comes generally from the barrel of a gun", Anita Dunn who adores mass murder & communist Chairman Mao.

How about his wealth redistribution goals. Here's a quote from the man himself (obama). "It's not that I want to punish your success; I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that they've got a chance at success, too. And I think, when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."

How about obama's own wife who said this? “The truth is, in order to get things like universal health care and a revamped education system, then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more.”

How about the people he hangs out with? His marxist church "friends", the marxist professors, his spiritual adviser Jim Wallis who says that the wealth should be spread around, financial terrorist & socialist George Soros, his radical-communist- colonialist parents & grandparents.

How about his attack the rich & successful campaign? That is socialist/marxist. He wants everyone to be equal.

So you see, the case for obama being a marxist and a socialist is very simple.

We just need to get corporate

We just need to get corporate money out of the electoral system once and for all. Anyone who thinks 'Citizens United' was a good call only wants to stand with the quid pro quo. Citizen funded elections are the only way to go if the people's work is to be done.
