Nation must cut freebies

  • Follow Letters

Problems in Europe are coming here! If this country and especially our elected officials don’t toughen up and make some hard choices, we are in for a mess in the next few years,

The reason Greece – soon to be Spain and others – is in trouble is because it set up too many freebies for its citizens, and now it wants to pull out the pacifier. You know what happens when you pull one out of a baby’s mouth – it fusses. Now try that on grown adults. They fuss and bite back hard! Look at protests going on in this country. This is nothing compared to what will happen if we don’t get a grip on it now!

No unemployment compensation after June 2012. That will force folks to get jobs – maybe not what they want, but too many folks are living off us taxpayers and are lazy.

Next, starting in January 2013, if you get pregnant, you pay for it – not taxpayers. This also means no more free food vouchers or food stamps. We are sick and tired of paying for freebies.

Then, all cities’ rapid-transit will not be subsidized by state or federal money starting in 2014. They will have to raise their rates or shut down. No more taxpayer money for discount transportation.

Burt Sappenfield

Parksville, S.C.

I bet Mr. Sappenfield calls himself pro-life. Call it a gut feeling...

The wings of the left and right often have those contradictions. I don't. I agree that if you have babies you ought to have to pay for them. YOUR (not you personally) offspring are not my responsibility to pay for any way, shape, form, or fashion. You make the choice to engage in activity that gets you pregnant, then you live with the consequences. Policies to the contrary play a big part of why we are in the social state we face today.

You might want to look at

You might want to look at some current statistics. The average welfare recipient is young, female and white.

"all cities’ rapid-transit

"all cities’ rapid-transit will not be subsidized by state or federal money starting in 2014". All highways and roads will then have to become self supporting as well. So it might only cost you $20-$30 dollars a day to get to work or the grocery store. No discounts or taxpayer money. At least folks will drive less, and help clear up air pollution.

tech fan the federal gas tax

tech fan the federal gas tax was suppose to be like social security a special fund supported by a specfic tax fpr a specific goal...there is no logic to your arguement...congress and especially this president is out of control. liberals cannot understand wasteful and ineffective programs and spending...why..because its other peoples money and they know better...history 100 percent contradicts this philosphy..

The gas tax doesn't begin to

The gas tax doesn't begin to cover construction and maintenance costs for our road system. In other words, they're subsidized, just like mass transit. Glad you're willing to cut the most wasteful department in our government, the DoD.

if the gas tax on state and

if the gas tax on state and federal level was used for the road system...each year, with closed sealed bids.. i believe there would be enough dollars...but you cant neglect maintaince for years without resulting in a inflated cost...simply put, road maintaince is not jazzy and congess neglected our highways system for years in spending those dollars..now the bill is coming up---but you seem adverse to freedom which driving affords..by stating at least people will drive less. so why do you care .and i am not against cutting wasteful spending in defense..everything must be wisely accounted for every penny...i take stewardship of tax money serioiusly...not one more dime of revenue for the federal govt till ALL waste, duplication and theft is completely weeded out...again that includes defense however i would not degrade our defense one little bit, our ability to disagree is based on our freedom which our military give us...

Mr. Sappenfield - you make an

Mr. Sappenfield - you make an excellent point. Freebies MUST BE PHASED OUT. Phased out is the most humane way of cutting everyone off. Give them notification of a final/end date and stick to it.

We, the taxpayers are tired of paying for the children you have that you can't afford (please, just don't have them if you can't feed them & provide for them).

We are tired of paying for your healthcare when we can barely afford our own.

We are tired of paying for you not to work because you don't like the job options available to you. Guess what? Our semi-socialist economy is failing. It's going to get worse. Get used to it.

We are tired of paying for your cell phone, your utilities, your rent, your spending money.

GET A JOB and stop mooching off the rest of us. Grow up.

The sad part is that most of

The sad part is that most of these "moochers" are moochers because the government encouraged, trained, and paid them to be moochers. We now have at least three generations of citizens who honestly believe the government (aka taxpayers) owe them food, housing, transportation, medical care, education, child care, etc. just because they exist. It was sold to the taxpayers, bit by bit, through legislation with lofty sounding names we were told proved how much we "really, really cared."

The truth is that the Federal government created this massive group of moochers so as to build a voting block called.......democrats.

You got it harley! That is

You got it harley! That is how we ended up with a radical marxist in the White House in 2009.

This voting block has so many numbers now I'm afraid they can't be stopped. It is a sad, sad situation for the United States of America.

A division of the union more & more seems to be the only way to stop this. I'm sure you know which side I'll be on. I'll even help build the wall to keep the starving socialists on the other side. I give them one year before they are living in total chaos.

Chillen said "I give them one

Chillen said "I give them one year before they are living in total chaos."

It won't take that long.

What would be the percentage that could provide anything of value to their society? Most have no skills, no knowledge, no abilities. They might be able to cook, but who'd provide the food? Who would do their HVAC work? Who would repair their cars? They could cut grass, but how would they get lawnmowers? Who would manage their water purification and distribution?

Sad, but true, that these OWS encampments give us a slight insight into the life in their potential society, but even then they've got the protection of the working side they'd be leaving behind.

All of which should lead us to the realization that what we're witnessing isn't simply the fall of democracy/capitalism, it's just as much the fall of democracy/socialism/capitalism all at once.

Our next step is communism and that's been the plan all along.

Sappenfield is probably right

Sappenfield is probably right if "Europe's problems are coming here" means the global debt crisis. Let's not forget, however, for the record, that the U.S. EXPORTED the financial crisis to Europe, first! And, for the record, most economists hold that the Great Depression had its origins in the U.S. before spreading globally.

It is common sense, however, to realize that creditors and lenders must work their way through mountains of debt issues in Europe before they take a closer look at the mountainous U.S. debt. Of course, one disadvantage of our NEW 'electronic age' remains the fact that economic catastrophe can transmit around the globe faster than Delta. Historically, countries in 'default' have faced sudden stops in capital flows; so far, Greece and Italy can still borrow.

What should government leaders do about U.S. domestic liabilities including, for instance, the many 'welfare' benefits Mr. Sappenfiled cities?

At the very least, programs should be 'vetted' to avoid duplication or excessive benefits. For instance, why should a couple receive food stamps, and help at the local food bank? Why did GA legislators allow the Obama White House to force GA to pay higher unemployment benefits in order to qualify for federal funds?

How many adults -- if any -- are actually vetted for poor nutrition? How can adults (and children) suffer from obesity and hunger epidemics simultaneously? Is it a gland problem?

The letter writer is correct about the need for more scrutiny for welfare programs; he's probably somewhat delusional if he thinks our current leaders will 'cross lines' and yield to political common sense. Like the 'leaders' in Europe, compromise will occur only at the last moment, and only after the worst possible outcomes have been experienced.

I believe in Food Stamps for poor people who after paying their bills there is no money left for food.

I completely agree and here's the book that supports harley's statement.

'When A Nation Forgets God...7 Lessons We Must Learn From Nazi Germany' by Erwin W. Lutzer

It's eye opening; it's powerful; it's happening right here, right now.
