Nanny state's cell service is an outrage

  • Follow Letters

On Sept. 16, on Page 8A of The Chronicle, an advertisement offered free cell phone service if you are eligible. A toll-free recorded message stated that anyone is eligible if they receive food stamps; are on Medicaid; live in Section 8 housing; receive Supplementary Security Income; receive a heating fuel subsidy; or receive any other state or federal giveaways.

This is the nanny state on steroids!

It is an in-your-face example of Marxism: “From each, according to his ability, to each according to his needs.” Learn to like it!

Sadly, most taxpayers won’t see the ad. The involuntary taking of their money, if done in public, is called armed robbery. When government does it, it’s called “fairness” or “wealth redistribution.” These destructive policies are being jammed down our throats while Congress and the news media remain strangely silent.

As for the “takers” in society, the following “rant” is illustrative of their mind-set. It is from The Chronicle, published June 5, 2008: “This is a rant for all the rich, high-class folks. Get your guns and get ready to fight to keep your food, because the poor will do whatever needs to be done to feed their families. Bad times are on the way.”

Notice that the word “work” was never used! This is America in 2011.

So true. Americans have lost

So true. Americans have lost America. America has become a land of toxic waste and Americans have become addicted to government subsidy. It is the saddest thing that I've ever seen and will ever see in my life. How Americans became for sale - with no hope, no faith, and no strength. Watch it happen.

In case you don't know,

In case you don't know, they're calling it an "Obama Phone". Funny this program hasn't made it into the mainstream media.
No wonder the cell phone stores are packed everytime I go there.

Just another example of our country circling the drain.

We have allowed generations

We have allowed generations of Americans to be raised with absolutely zero work ethic. Slaves to the govt - their votes being bought by the liberals.

Remember this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOZ-Etb0k0Q
Or this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P36x8rTb3jI

Welfare users are experts at sniffing out free money. They use their govt provided cell phones, complete with blue tooth headsets to call each other whenever the govt is giving out money. Why do you think thousands of people end up in the lines?

If they would channel their energy into finding a job and a bit of self dignity then America would have a fighting chance. As it is, with 15% of Americans on the welfare dole we will be unable to sustain the nation. That is a fact.

Georgia and South Carolina need to do what Michigan just did. They put in a 4 year lifetime cap for welfare benefits. On October 1st, 12,000 families will be removed from the welfare roster. They have 3 choices: Get a job. Starve. Move to another state. Guess which choice they will make?!

What a power move by Michigan! 12,000 welfare users will be packing up & moving to a more welfare friendly state. I say we make all 50 states welfare unfriendly.

Dawgn, they do not come from

Dawgn, they do not come from the cell phone store. They are mailed to the receiver. I have had several people come into my business to fax the application. They come with 250 minutes and if you use all of them during the month then other minutes have to be purchased from Trac Phone or one of its other companies at $.10 per minute. To me it is a scam on the poor because they get used to the phone. The government is not running the ads a private company is. When the moochers get the phone they get a pin number and get additional FREE minuets at the beginning of each month. Not fair to the taxpayer but this was started long before Obama even though they get the name of "Obama Phone". And I do not like President Obama one bit but respect the office of President.

Chillen. I just had a welfare person call my office and see if there was anything he could do. All he wanted was to do about 30 min work because he has run out of cigars and he said his check comes in a day or two. What a way to think. Never mind food. All he wanted was smokes.
And I like what Michigan did. Others need to follow.

That’s worth

That’s worth repeating:

http://www.factcheck.org/2009/10/the-obama-phone/

“The Obama Phone?

Q: Has the Obama administration started a program to use "taxpayer money" to give free cell phones to welfare recipients?

A: No. Low-income households have been eligible for discounted telephone service for more than a decade. But the program is funded by telecom companies, not by taxes, and the president has nothing to do with it.”

More Swiftboating from the right; what is it with these people and their inability to tell the truth?

When this program was first

When this program was first announced I knew the socialists/communists were firmly in control. Will someone please justify to me why one person should pay someone else's cell phone bill? I don't have a smartphone or a texting plan because I cannot afford it. But I do pay income taxes and therefore someone else's cell phone bill. And that is in addition paying for their rent, food, medical bills, and a little sumpin' sumpin' for spending money every month which we kindly deposit directly into their account every month without them making one bit of effort to improve themselves or support themselves. Please explain the fairness and equality of that to me? Working, taxPAYING, Americans are being robbed by their government in broad daylight and robbed by the thugs at night. I guess free cable and a Chevrolet will be next. Whatever you have, the government is determined to take it and give it to someone who is already riding the freebie train. All aboard!! Next stop, free Chevys.

"I guess free cable and a Chevrolet will be next." dichotomy, Just wait & see what the obama administration does with all the foreclosures. He's already making noise about using them. You ain't seen nothin' yet!

@bjphysics. The phone are paid for with tax dollars.

From snopes: "A federal program subsidizes providers who supply cell phones and essential services to low income consumers." From urban legends. "Is there a U.S. govt program that provides free or discounted phones & wireless service to low-income Americans? Yes. It consists of two parts: "Link-Up," which helps income-eligible people set up new home phone service, and "Lifeline," which helps income-eligible people pay their monthly phone charges.

So, not only are we paying for their cell phone. We are also paying for their home phone!!

I swear I feel like we are living in the Twilight Zone. What the heck?!

bjphysics said...."A: No.

bjphysics said...."A: No. Low-income households have been eligible for discounted telephone service for more than a decade. But the program is funded by telecom companies, not by taxes, and the president has nothing to do with it.”

Of course he doesn't. No more than any President has to do with the operation of the Federal government to which, when I last checked, the Federal Communications Commission belonged.

If you read (and understood) your own link you'd see that the funding comes from the Universal Service Fund which is funded by charges to individuals' phone bills authorized by the Federal Law. Charges to individuals mandated by government decree are typically viewed as taxes, whether they're called "income tax," or "universal service fee," or "fishing license." They're all taxes.

So the term "Obama phone" is correct. Obama is President, one of the agencies he presides over is the FCC, and they created and control the Universal Service Administrative Company. The Universal Service Administrative Company accepts "contributions" from phone companies that they receive from government approved taxes collected on paying customers' phone bills.

Originally intended as an emergency system, now so subverted and convoluted as to become nothing more than a government handout to any "poor" person who wants a cell phone.

And I suppose in the parallel universe of the Obama apologists, he's powerless to stop it too, eh?

The strategy of the obamabots

The strategy of the obamabots is pretty clear by now. With no accomplishments to highlight and no programs to brag about they're pretty much left to defending him by blaming everybody else, including "the system," for all his failures as a President.

Liberals love obama. They love that he was elected to "spread the wealth around" (never mind that he's mostly spread it to the billionaires and welfare users....).

Now that he is doing it and getting credit for it - hence the "obama phone" term. They are offended.

"That's what four decades of

"That's what four decades of "the great society" have brought us.

Thank the democrats '

Trying to figure that one out. Presidencies over the last 40 years Jan begining year - December ending year
1972-1976 Richard Nixon (R) 5 y
1977-1980 Jimmy Carter (D) 4 y
1981-1988 Ronald Reagan (R) 8 y
1989-1992 George H Bush (R) 4 y
1993-2000 Bill Clinton (D) 8 y
2000-2007 George W Bush (R) 8 y
2008-2011 Barak Obama (D) 3 y

For a grand total of -
Republican - 25 years
Democrat - 15 years

Seems a little odd that democrats are all to blame when republicans held the head office for a full 10 years longer than the democrats over those 40 years. Why do I have the theme music to the TV show "Twilight Zone" ringing in my head?

Live in the urban center of town. Never heard the term from our poor or homeless ever. This came up in another thread, the person who initially made the claim implied one race, but then lightened the shade of the race who supposedly used it considerably later on. All Michigian did was knock a

All Michigian did was knock a year off... Big deal! There are no lifetime benefits for welfare folk, stop drinking the kool-aid......

From Georgia's TANF website:Georgia TANF Benefits There is a maximum of 60 months of TANF assistance benefits within one's lifetimes. There is oftentimes a differentiation between adults and children. If you are a child and receive TANF benefits, depending on your State, you could receive another 60 months as an adult.

South Carolinas Limits: Federal rules or guidelines: There is a lifetime time limit of 60 months on a family''s receipt of federally-funded benefits, but states may exempt up to 20% of their caseload from this limit and/or use state funds to extend benefits.
Lifetime time limit7 60 months (2005)

Clinton passed a federal limit to welfare of 5 years. Stop with the insanity. Michigian is defying the federal limits. Keep trying to get rid of the government and what will be left is a group of states that cant get along, like the US was right after the Revolutionary War but before the Constitution was passed in 1788.....

“The Universal Service Fund (USF) was created by the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 1997 to meet Congressional universal service goals as mandated by the Telecommunications Act of 1996. The 1996 Act states…”

Let’s break this down s-l-o-w-l-y: the Universal Service Fund is pursuant to the Telecommunications Act of 1996; this is what we call a LAW. It was passed by both houses of Congress and signed into LAW by a past President; Obama does not have the authority to ignore the provisions of existing LAW, he CANNOT order the FCC to circumvent LAW because, pursuant to the Constitution:

Article II, Section. 1.

“The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America.”

Section 3:

“…he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed…”

Obama can try to have the LAW changed but until it is he is bound by oath to faithfully execute existing LAW.

And Teapublicans fancy themselves “Constitutionalists”…Whatever.
