Georgia outclasses Boise State on field

  • Follow Letters

This is in reference to Scott Michaux’s column in the Sept. 4 paper (“‘Statement’ has hollow ring vs. a better team”), on the University of Georgia-Boise State University football game. It’s apparent he’s not a Georgia fan, because of all his previous columns on Georgia, but it doesn’t matter whether he is a fan – he should be able to write an objective column.

He stated “the quarterback didn’t get much help with the running game that ran off its two best rushers from a year ago.” They were asked to leave the team because of their actions and behavior, and Coach Mark Richt made the decision. They were not “ran off.”

Over the years, a lot of college coaches have become like the pros. They don’t care what the players do off the field as long as they are talented players on game day. All of their childish, criminal behavior is easily overlooked because they have certain talents. Richt will never have a quarterback on his team whom he suspended five times.

During the game, ESPN announcers said Boise State should be able “to run the table” on the rest of their schedule once they get past Georgia. That is one of the major differences in college football. Georgia, at present, is a mediocre team in the Southeastern Conference. They would be a good team in Boise State’s conference, or I would like for them to join the SEC and play an SEC schedule for the next 10 years and see how good they look.

And last, Georgia lost by 14 points and Boise State was trying to score all four quarters, Georgia beat Boise State by 35 points in 2005 and could have scored more, but that is not Richt’s style. You don’t embarrass an opponent when they are beaten.

If Richt never wins another football game, he still will be a better person than a lot who win every Saturday.

You "cooks" have quickly

You "cooks" have quickly forgotten what 0-11 feels like! Maybe you should be a little more humble during your time of good fortune. Yes, more than likely the "cooks" will beat UGA but a number 12 team is suppose to beat an unranked team. Good luck and may the best team win and Go Dawgs!

?????? Richt hasn't

?????? Richt hasn't overlooked "childish, criminal behavior? Storm the field before a game for example? Last year it was rumored that UGA's new uniform was going to be orange jumpsuits.

Guess Reese didn't notice

Guess Reese didn't notice that BS took a knee on the final play from UGA's 3 yrd line. They easily could have scored again. Boise displayed a lot of class. I hope they win out and get a chance in the Big Game.

I'm a GA fan all the way, but

I'm a GA fan all the way, but Richt is not there to show everyone what a classy guy he is. His job is to simply coach a winning football team.

Doris, so it's win at any cost? You are entitled to your opinion. In my opinion the two are not mutual exclusive.

"True Fan"? I'm not sure what

"True Fan"? I'm not sure what that is; but I make no claim to being anything but a spectator that expects to see 100% effort every time out from the player, and a coach capable of extracting that 100% effort and parlaying it into a competitive, exciting team to watch play. We had this "true fan" malarkey with the Augusta Lynx when the Lynx were stinking up the ice and people would leave early. You pay for a ticket with expectations that you will see what you pay for. If not, get up and leave.

I might add, cat calling and booing the team is just stupid. So is the tweeting and messaging. People are certainly entitled to do so, but in the end it can only result in worse performance. Just vote with your feet/wallet and keep your mouth shut.

Not discounting that Richt is

Not discounting that Richt is a great example, but I would rather have come away from Saturday's game as the "winner" rather than the "classiest."

This is the dumbest article

This is the dumbest article EVER. 1. This was a BLOW OUT that the score does not really show. If BSU's redshirt freshman starting corner, that found out he was not only playing this season but found out he was starting the day before the game, didn't miss his assignment twice, UGA would have scored two less times. 2. Boise State had a total of three key starters removed a day before the game. 3. We took the ball over on the 1 yard line with seconds left and DIDN'T score again when we could have before the game ended. This game could easily have been 42-7. 4. Why has everyone decided UGA is mediocre? They haven't even played a league game!!!

Reese, you state, “That is

Reese, you state, “That is one of the major differences in college football. Georgia, at present, is a mediocre team in the Southeastern Conference. They would be a good team in Boise State’s conference, or I would like for them to join the SEC and play an SEC schedule for the next 10 years and see how good they look.” A little side note: if Boise State joined the SEC they would probably be amongst the top three teams in the conference year in and year out. Reasons: they would completely secure the pacfic coast recruiting pipeline within the SEC. Any 5 star athletes in Washington, Oregon, or California, could play relatively close to home and still enjoy the high caliber opponents that the SEC has to offer. With that being said, Georgia is very much mediocre, but they would remain mediocre in any conference. Reasons: they lost last year’s bowl game to Conference USA’s University of Central Florida, they have struggled in the past against some of the lower tiered teams in the SEC (Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Mississippi), and they only convincingly win against the teams they are supposed to beat. Georgia is at best the 6th best team in the SEC and that is generous. Realistically, Mississippi State and Auburn (despite being merely a shell of it’s National Championship team from a year ago) are greater competitors. That makes Georgia the 8th best team in the SEC and they play all 4 teams ranked lower than them (Mississippi, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Kentucky). So expect Georgia to go 4-4 in the SEC which is misleading, couple that with wins against New Mexico State and Coastal Carolina, and Georgia should be bowling come December. Perhaps, the Music City, maybe the Meineke Car Care, maybe even the Independence, but anything far from relevant. And certainly those big-money UGA boosters will not be able to tolerate another season of mediocrity. Expect Richt to be packing his bags come 2012. Also, South Carolina 24 Georgia 12.

I cannot understand the point

I cannot understand the point the writer is trying to make other than an excuse. It was a football game between two teams andall the other hoopla is just excuses. As for being ahead 14 points in the 4th, have you ever seen a team score twice in just a matter seconds. I hate georgia lost but acting like a baby is not the answer.

Didn't Auburn score 14 points

Didn't Auburn score 14 points in less than a minute???

I guess that's what Utah State (A WAC team by the way) gets for trying to be classy when beating a mighty SEC team on their home field...oh how the mighty have fallen

Richt, as a man, is a real

Richt, as a man, is a real class act. I'm not a fan of UGA, so I won't comment on his head coaching abilities. In my lifetime, I have seen a lot of excellent coaches come into programs on the wane and struggle with them. And I will be the first to tell you that we, the public, do not know what forces they are dealing with behind the scenes.

For those of you who advocate win at all costs instead of being a classy winner, these students are basically still kids and the examples and ideas the coaches instill in them, they carry forward throughout the rest of their lives. I'm the daughter of a college athlete, the wife of a college athlete and the mother of two college athletes. Oh, and the sister of one and the aunt of one. It's not all about what happens on the field or the court or the course. It's still school and a learning experience, no matter how many alumni and fan support and TV money is pumped in.
