Richest people should pay most taxes

  • Follow Letters

When it comes to the rich paying more taxes, Rush Limbaugh and conservatives are completely irrational and delusional.

They say that since the rich pay most of the taxes, their tax rates should not increase. Their rationale is self-serving nonsense. The rich pay more taxes because they make most of the money. Whoever makes the most money should pay the most taxes -- plain and simple.

Furthermore, since profits are not equally distributed, taxes should not be equally distributed. Common sense dictates that billionaires and multimillionaires ought to pay more taxes than people who are less wealthy. They made great fortunes while the majority of their work force were paid meager, nonliving wages.

Therefore, it's only fair for the rich to pay more taxes. However, being fair and being rich do not go hand in hand.

The rich are not fair to U.S. citizens. They hire illegal immigrants because they will work for lower wages and no benefits. Increasingly, the rich are not paying cost-of-living increases to their employees to keep pace with inflation. The rich get richer; the poor get poorer.

In addition, most corporate-created new jobs are lower-echelon, nonliving-wage jobs that will not afford food, clothing and shelter. For example, most of the new jobs in the upcoming Costco store in Augusta likely will be nonliving-wage jobs.

The reason is simple. Costco did not come to Augusta to be fair. It came to Augusta to exploit the work force and increase its riches by not being fair to its employees. Nonetheless, Costco and its underpaid employees will each pay their share of taxes.

What a letter! So many

What a letter! So many generalities, so little time.

For the record, the rich do pay more in taxes. The issue isn't the amount they pay, but the rate at which they pay it.

Two words: Wealth envy.

More soak-the-rich drivel.

More soak-the-rich drivel. How about this. The (almost) half of the people who are not paying taxes should pay their share of the tax burden. That's what we need to happen. The rich are already paying "more" taxes and at an already higher rate. If the freeloaders who are not paying THEIR fair share would kick in a little, we would not need to soak one class to support another.

God, who understands fairness

God, who understands fairness far better than Kevin Palmer does, called for a flat tax: the tithe. With everybody paying at the same rate, the rich paid more without being penalized for their success, and even the poor paid a little so that they weren't rewarded for laziness.

Today's tax code penalizes the working and middle classes by progressively taxing wages, salaries, commissions, and tips. It favors the poor by exempting them from tax and by transferring wealth to them. It also favors the rich by going easy on dividends, interest, and capital gains--the kinds of income most Americans don't have. Were it not for the alternative minimum tax, some of the rich could live tax free thanks to interest from municipal bonds.

Kevin Palmer's letter shows a lack of knowledge about these things.

"More soak-the-rich drivel" (dichotomy). Actually, Palmer advocates soaking the people who earn wages, salaries, commissions, and tips.

My sister and her husband own

My sister and her husband own a 6 million dollar horse farm. My older brother contracted for 30 years and has over 20.000.000 banked. My younger sister lives in a 6 million dollar home and travels to Abi Dubia with her daughter to vacation. My other younger sister married into an old Blue Blood family across the state. I KNOW some of these 'rich' people. Reinstating the Bush tax cuts will not in the least cut any of their usual activities and in fact will keep their accountants that much more busy. As to jobs that they may produce, ask any good economist, without DEMAND their are NO JOBS, it doesn't have a thing to do with how rich you are. I do believe that any new revenue should go to relieve the deficit and would not support my brother and sisters paying more in taxes so that spending can go up. Wealth envy is way to overplayed by anti tax myth makers.

Faithson-Envy and covating

Faithson-Envy and covating use to be sins. I think all of your next raise should go to pay down the deficit. You have access to a computer at 3:24 AM so obviously you are wealthier than most of the poor. Home Depot has produced more than a thousand millionaires! Where was Warren Buffet, Winfrey and Bill Gates 60 years ago? How many people became wealthy because Bill Gates started Microsoft? I know lets just tax the daylights out of the whole next generation of Gates and Winfreys they don't need their wealth as much as the government does.. I know if we take your next social Security raise or salary raise you will get along just fine, every body needs to have some skin in the game.. besides you have an earned income so you are better off than the unemployes..

Why should someone be

Why should someone be penalized because they happen to have more smarts or more work ethic to work harder and more hours to succeed, and are willing to take risks to get it. Some people are unwilling to work long hours and/or do not manage the money they make wisely, so they want to blame their lack on the rich and expect them to provide for their lack of discipline in their own life.

Without the wealthy buying

Without the wealthy buying those tax free bonds and taking the risk that the municipalities will not default there would be fewer roads, bridges, public housing, hospitals, airports and all thingls the public uses.
Seems to me that the flat tax would be good if it taxes everyone at the same rate. What's wron with paying the tax at the point of sale then those that work under the table would also pay into the coffers. Oh, I forgot that would not be fair to the yardman, drug dealer, back yard mechanic or anyone who works for cash.

Ok- I had to fast forward to

Ok- I had to fast forward to the bottom here cause I'm not fully awake yet. I believe that there should be a set percentage that EVERY"ONE" pays... This is where the "rich" are getting off. The individuals making $200,000 a year and up and couples making $250,000 and up are currently getting a DISCOUNT off their taxes because of the tax cuts Duhbya got passed. Everyone below those amounts are having to pay their full sharel. The tax breaks given to the people at or over that amount is ridiculous- everyone should pay their fair share. Why are legislators even wanting to leave those tax cuts alone??? Because they are in that category themselves. Ending the Bush tax cuts is the fair thing to do for everyone.

Great comments; Jesus said

Great comments; Jesus said the poor would be with you always so apparently you can't eliminate the poor. Rich is only a problems if the money owns you and has you in bondage. Jesus knew the difference as He told one rich man to get rid of his money because He knew it owned him and would keep him out of heaven. Another rich man wasn't told that because he had freedom and was a giver. A national sales tax would fix a lot of things and would be the end of the IRS and tons of paper work. It would spur the economy the first week everyone received their entire check with NO deductions. All the systems are in place to do this except states without a sales tax. The states collect it all and pass on the the federal government. The rate would be low because all the untaxed money would now pay taxes when it was spent. The solution to our financial problems is so easy that you have to be trained as a politician to not understand..

The real question isn't who

The real question isn't who needs to pay more taxes.

The real question is whether the government "needs" more money.

The belief that anyone (rich, poor, or otherwise) should pay more taxes is a belief that the government is currently spending every dollar it collects properly.

Anyone who beleives that should up their dosage of medication.

Although I don't 100% agree

Although I don't 100% agree with all of Kevins thoughts, I do understand "where he's coming from." Because I don't know the "inner workings" of Costco, I feel I can't bash them here - at least for now - but, rest assured, it's no secret that most labor is vastly under-paid and under-appreciated. If you would really like to know how "the system" works, might I suggest you read Democracy for the Few by Michael Parenti. But Kevin's letter should at least make you question why the top 1% own about 40% of the wealth - which is more than the combined wealth of the bottom 90%. It's called a plutocracy or oligarchy.

The house, controlled by those evil Republicans, sent a bill that would have begun paying off the national debt, PROVIDED a balanced budget amendment was passed. Obama said last week, "We don't need a balanced budget amendment." The senate, controlled by those compassionate Democrats, have killed this bill because it had the balanced budget amendment requirement in it. And yet, they have the stones to blame the other party for our financial mess. Yeah, I'm laughing.
