On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I would like to express congratulations to the judges of the Augusta Judicial Circuit, the elected officials of Augusta-Richmond County and all members of Augusta's legal community for an outstanding series of ceremonial events dedicating the new Augusta Judicial Center and John H. Ruffin Jr. Courthouse.
Although I was unable to attend the actual dedication of the courthouse, I was privileged to be at the outstanding Law Day banquet the night before, coordinated by Augusta Bar Association President Sam Nicholson. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was the speaker and delivered an excellent message about the importance of the rule of law and the roles of all who labor to protect it.
The ceremonies continued the following day with the dedication of the courthouse to the memory of Judge Ruffin, one of Georgia's legal giants, whose career as a lawyer and a judge personified the noble pursuit of justice for all. That legacy, now acknowledged with this beautiful new facility, is a great source of pride for Augusta.
All Georgia lawyers and judges can be inspired by our Augusta colleagues' commitment and effort to strengthen the judicial system in their community, which in turn serves to promote the cause of justice and uphold the integrity of the legal profession in our state.
