Steer our kids in the right direction

  • Follow Letters

Regardless of the individual belief in whether or not to accept the Bible literally, one should read the Bible as a source of excellent advice. For example: Spare the rod and spoil the child.

We have spared the rod and spoiled at least two generations of American children. These children think nothing of ethics. They have little or no understanding of the difference between right and wrong. Therefore, they cannot act morally.

Young Americans of today think it is OK to lie, cheat, betray trust, fornicate, steal and commit adultery -- remember the Long Island Lolita? Our children have unrealistic expectations and a sense of entitlement.

How do we solve these problems? Use fair and consistent discipline, which need not be brutal or even physical. Teach the children well to work hard and play fair, and to remember the Golden Rule.

I would add that probably a greater problem is that kids will model what they see in their parents. If they see parents lying, cheating, drinking, putting down others, etc. what are they expected to do? Problem is that there are few available to "discipline" the parents.

"Spare the rod and spoil the child." Sorry Victoria, it's not from the Bible. It's from a poem by Samuel Butler.

"Teach the children well to

"Teach the children well to work hard and play fair, and to remember the Golden Rule" (Victoria E. Antonacci).

It's hard to teach these things without faith in God and the Bible. The advice on not sparing the rod, for instance, comes from Proverbs*, which clearly states: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning [prerequisite, chief or supreme principal] of knowledge" and "wisdom" (1:7; 9:10). This is why the Bible often presents God's Law along with His testimonies about who He is and what He has done. Unless children believe in God as Creator and Lawgiver, they'll never obey His commandments, nor will they fear Him as the Judge to whom we all must give account on the last day.

*Proverbs 13:24; 22:15; 23:13-14; 29:15

Become a cheerful giver to

Become a cheerful giver to the Lord's work and then only one income will be needed instead of two. Get them away from Godless evolution teaching even if you have to home school. Treat TV like a rattlesnake in your house. Be the best model you can. Show them that givers are always in charge of their own happiness, peace and joy. Teach them to love people and hate sin. Teach them that the Word is reality and others things may or may not be real. Show them the Spirit filled life and they will never leave it because everything else will be dull as dirt.

Ummmm, Techfan....."Whoever

Ummmm, Techfan....."Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them." Proverbs 13:24 .....might want to check things out first for yourself.

I agree parents need to be the best role models they can be, and that will probably pay off in the long run. But in the adolescent years, which now lasts into the mid 20s (or longer for some), parents don't have as much influence as peers and celebrities. Most parents are looked at by their kids at this stage as stupid, old, and old fashioned.

You can raise two kids in the same house and have kids with opposite personalities, morals, and ethics. I've seen it first hand. And also, I hate to mention this.....but look at many PKs (preacher's kids). Good news is I think most of the time they grow out of it.

While I agree there are far too many irresponsible parents out there, I believe there are more responsible ones.
