Many in community deserve our thanks

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference's Augusta Branch, whose mission has been to stand for nonviolence and education since 1957, commends Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength, other law enforcement agencies and those officers who personally put their lives on the line to make the streets of Augusta safer for its residents and stop those who would rather profit from drugs, guns, violence and death.

We also express our grief for the young man who was killed this past weekend and the families of others who were shot -- and offer our services to the whole community for healing through prayer and courage.

We also take our hats off to Tonethia Beasley who is the interim director for professional learning for the Richmond County school system, who in part led a countywide project that stimulated us to better serve the needs of students and parents especially. It was educational and empowering as we sought to find ways to help the whole child whether they came from communities of disparity or prosperity.

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. said: "Intelligence plus character -- that is the goal of true education."

The Rev. Larry Fryer
