How dare you support the first lady

  • Follow Letters

The Augusta Chronicle continues to have a hard time saying the right thing about its opposition. While it's right to honor Michelle Obama and her fight against childhood obesity ("First lady is right; why fight her?" Feb. 14), you show your usual hypocrisy throughout this editorial.

You never supported Barack Obama for president, and continue to trash him -- then say it's great for young black boys and girls to have him and Michelle to look up to as positive role models. You support Republican (see: conservative) values, which include corporate America and big business. Those two entities helped create childhood obesity.

What gall for you to then support Michelle's initiative in regulating what restaurants can and can't serve. As a server and as a consumer, and as someone who holds a degree in physical education, I agree with Michelle's "pet cause" wholeheartedly -- yet disagree with The Augusta Chronicle pandering to those who truly support the Obamas.

Copperhead, please don't

Copperhead, please don't overstate matters. Mrs. Obama is not trying to determine your diet or to force you to put foods that you don't like on your family table; she is merely using her powers of persuasion to remind us all how important it is to eat a healthy diet and obtain moderate exercise. Given the high rates of obesity-related diseases in this region, we would be wise to listen to what she has to say.

Considering the crap her clueless husband has shoved down the American peoples' throats, Michelle Obama is small potatoes, pardon the pun. But, more "change" is coming in 2012. Hey Barry, ready to go back to Chicago and be a "community organizer?" I'm sure Rahm will give you a job.

It's a shame professors and teachers don't instruct from BOTH sides of the political spectrum. Most seem to teach socialism, i.e. the obamas (they appear to have been 4.0 GPA'ers in this line of study). Without "big business" and "corporate America", the few farmers that could subsist would need a LOT of labor to feed the more than 300,000,000 people residing on this former great land. Would that labor be voluntary? Sounds like someone thinks we should be Somalia or the lawless Sudan.

Who would take exception to

Who would take exception to Michelle Obama's platform on nutrition and exercise? How bizarre is that?

Because taxpayers spend billions every year on medical care for diabetes, heart disease, etc.

Do you want to cut your taxes, or not?

Too bad some people can't see past their obsessions.

Don't nobody mess with my

Don't nobody mess with my fried chicken!!! I also like a lot of cheese in my grits. If I'm going to have eggs then I start with at least 4. None of this one egg crap. Who eats one egg?
I know childhood obesity is a problem but it's not the food it's the lack of exercise. If you don't burn the amount of calories that you take in then you gain weight. It's pretty simple.
Instead of blaming McDonalds they need to blame the makers of video games and crappy television shows that kids are more interested in than getting outside and staying active.
People need to put blame where it belongs. Childhood obesity is comparitively new compared to fast food which has been around for over 50 years.
Get your kid involved in activities that require exercise and you wont have to worry about them getting FAT!

Laura Bush's "cause" was

Laura Bush's "cause" was literacy. I don't recall hearing any democrats berating her for "trying to tell parents how to raise their children" because she wanted them to learn how to read. Why would they? We can all agree kids should learn to read right? Michelle Obama's cause is nutrition. How can anyone have a problem with that?? Our kids are expected to have shorter lives than we do! That is shameful and a direct result of bad diets in this country. It's not something that should be made a political issue. I would have thought that anyone with half a brain would be able to unite behind this, of all issues.

I swear if Michelle Obama said the sky was blue, the GOP would contradict her and say it was green just to be contrary. Obese children and high-fructose corn sugar = good. Good nutrition, healthy children, and breastfeeding = bad. Way to go, GOP/Tea Partiers :-/

The reason for childhood

The reason for childhood obesity is poor parenting and that is what Ms. "O" needs to point out. The children do not drive themselves to the fast food outlets. If the female parent (because too many times there is no male parent in the household) would concentrate on nutrition and home cooking and lock up the X boxes and oversee the children in physical play activities, then we would not have to endure Ms. "O" and her visage on T.V. BTW, Ms. "O", you need a lot of hours on the treadmill and eliptical for those saddlebags and the oversized trunk.

Hey MK, have you found a way to blame the GOP/Tea Partiers for the dinosaurs dying out yet? I'm sure they're responsible...somehow. Yeah, I'm laughing.

I'm about to run out to

I'm about to run out to McDonalds for some carrot sticks & apples slices. A side of skim milk to drink. Be back later to comment on the freshness. Yeah, right. I can get that at home, why go out for it?!

Once Michelle drops about 40 pounds then she can talk to us all about obesity. But no government force or laws. We can make our own choices, thank you.

‘You support Republican (see:

‘You support Republican (see: conservative) values, which include corporate America and big business. Those two entities helped create childhood obesity.’
You are wrong. The problem started when the 2nd worst president ever ole peanut brain Carter formed the DOE. Parents, mostly liberals, started complaining because their lazy kids were required to exercise during gym class which everyone was required to take.
Liberals feel someone else should exercise for them. Why not they think some one else should do their work.
