So John Barrow calls this 'working'?

  • Follow Letters

Rep. John Barrow sends a super-expensive mailout claiming he's "working for our district." It includes a list of federal spending that -- since the feds are broke -- is clearly hurting us rather than helping anybody.

His list includes "tours" he's taken. Who the heck does that help, but his ego and his own political future?

He "hosted free dental clinics." "Free?" Somebody pays -- the taxpayer; and government dental clinics are unconstitutional.

He "held a job fair." Alas, "job fairs" don't create jobs. They display lists that might or might not be jobs.

He claims he "stands up for our district," while he continues to help President Obama spend our money that doesn't even exist.

He brags of "securing much-needed funding for local projects." "Local projects" are not the business, nor under the constitutional authority, of the federal government -- thus Barrow is helping Obama hook locals on illegal federal handouts.

Barrow is "solving" no one's problems; he's just continuing to create more problems for the Georgians who actually work and then pay the exorbitant federal taxes.

I suspect the writer doesn't

I suspect the writer doesn't care what political party John Barrow belongs to. Both parties are guilty but it just happened that one of the democrats chose to spend thousands of dollars to brag about spending money we don't have. I got the same mailer and when I saw it was from Barrow, didn't even look at it and threw it in the trash. I knew what it was without looking.

Blah, blah, blah, same old

Blah, blah, blah, same old stuff, write in with something new, please! How about solutions to a problem, not a complaint of the same old ones.

Exorbitant federal taxes?

Exorbitant federal taxes? Compared to what and when? Where were you in previous decades?

I hope that Mr. Dekle similarly objects to the larger federal spending to which our area is addicted, namely Savannah River Site, Ft Gordon and Plant Vogtle. He may also want to object to the state's massive funding of institutions such as the Medical College of Georgia and the new prison being built there in Millen, GA.

By writing his opinion, Mr. Dekle is saying, "Vote them out". None of these leopards will change their spots, so they've got to go. It's the only solution that can be posited by the voter. It's only blah blah to you, yet you also posit no solution.

afadel, dental clinics and job fairs are hardly in the arena of federal support for the military and state wide electrical needs. Surely you realize that bonds must be paid back and the federal government must oversee any nuclear effort. Apples and oranges, yet you attempt a correlation.

I've read your post in the past, and while we disagree on many subjects, I haven't found you to be lacking in intelligence. Was my perception flawed?

No one in Augusta can

No one in Augusta can complain about federal spending (and support its economic health). This city requires it. We'd quickly be Detroit if the feds quit pumping money into Medicare and Medicaid, SRS, Ft. Gordon, and Vogtle (and, yes, Vogtle is a federal project).

Particularly comical are those who work in any of the above industries and complain about federal taxes and spending. News flash: your job IS that spending.

How is Vogtle a federal

How is Vogtle a federal project. Owned by Southern Company. New units under construction owned by Southern Company. I don't see your reasoning.

Vogtle 3 & 4 wouldn't be

Vogtle 3 & 4 wouldn't be possible without massive federal loan guarantees.

Here's an article from this paper about them: http://m.chronicle.augusta.com/stories/2009/12/19/met_560124.shtml

Loan guarantee means nothing.

Loan guarantee means nothing. The loans came from the banks, not a handout from the government.
I doubt that this the only venture where loans are guaranteed by the government.

If the feds weren't necessary

If the feds weren't necessary for the expansion, why did the project not move forward until the feds stepped up?

I'd be interested to see an economist calculate how much of Augusta's GDP is dependent upon the federal government.

Quite a bit of the area is

Quite a bit of the area is dependent on the federal jobs. However, Vogtle 3 and 4 were well under way before the loan guarantee.
